Wiki Editoras Lx (WELx) is a feminist user group of wikimedians in Portuguese that meet twice a month since may 2019 - in person at PENHAS CO, in Lisbon, and online since march 2020 - to edit (create, improve and extend articles/ pages) about cis and trans women, non-binary people and other matters of interest.

Edit-a-thon Visibility of Margins. Together we edit Wikipedia - 2019

Committed to action based on anti-colonial, decolonial, anti-racist, anti-capacitist and anti-discrimination values and principles, we created and improved pages, inserted images and data to promote knowledge equity.

At the same time, we contribute to more people underrepresented in the Wikimedia Movement being able to edit and increase their representation on this digital platform, reducing bias and promoting a more plural community.

The group prioritises editing content linked to Portuguese-speaking communities, in particular black, migrant, indigenous, rural, Roma/traveller and LGBTQI+, among others. Another priority of this group is to increase the number of editors within Wikipedia, and for that purpose, it opens its meetings twice a month to those who have never edited and would like to learn.

History

The Wiki Editoras Lx group emerged from the Editatona Visibility of Margins, which took place at the 2nd Lisbon Feminist Festival, in May 2019, and had 10 participants who received training on how to edit on Wikipedia, led by Patricia Horrillo, coordinator of the user group Wikiesfera, then based at Medialab-Prado, Madrid. Since then the Wiki Editoras Lx group meets regularly, twice a month, on Mondays.

The 8M: Artivism Edit-a-thon. Together we edit Wikipedia was held in Lisbon in March 2020 at the Penha Cooperativa SCO.

In December 2019, the group was invited to organize an editatona in 2020 by Art+Feminism. It was held on March 8, International Women's Day, and it was supported by the Wikimedia Foundation:

The event brought together 24 women and people of non-conforming gender; during the event 26 biographies were created and over 110 editions were made in the Portuguese-language Wikipedia:

Participants, articles created and improved, and other results can be checked at the event's event dashboard.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, meetings that had taken place in Lisbon, at PENHA SCO (co-operative for artistic production and dissemination) became available online. As was the case when they happened in person, these took place once a month.

In early 2023, WELx secured their first annual funding with the Wikimedia Foundation and since then, in addition to two monthly editing meetings (one online and one face-to-face), they have organized a series of activities such as competitions, training and editing.

Ongoing activities

Fortnightly meetups

In these meetings, which have an average of 10 participants per session, articles (biographies) on women and non-binary people are created collaboratively. Currently they take place twice a month, alternating between face-to-face and online. They're open to anyone who has never edited on Wikipedia and wants to learn. The meetings are based on learning by doing, knowledge sharing and mutual help among participants, so new people are trained on how to create a Wikipedia article by the more experienced users. Guest curators

These arise from the desire to collaborate in order to address the lack of representation of communities and specific knowledge in Wikipedia. Their purpose is to hold a Wiki Editoras Lx editing meeting in which the content to be edited is defined by an invited curator (person or organization). The meeting is not regular and takes place when there are opportunities for partnerships and the possibility of organisation. You don't have to know how to edit to participate, and can receive training at the event.

Partners of the Guest Curatorships carried out between 2020 and 2023:

  • curatorship #1 - Mulheres na Arquitectura Association and the academic project W.ARCH.PT
