Abstract
Christ University Wikipedia in Education Program (CUWEP 2015-16)
Christ University, Bengaluru entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Centre for Internet and Society, Bengaluru, India to make article writing on Wikipedia a core exercise for the Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) of its 1600 undergraduate students in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Sanskrit and Urdu. The university produced the first of its kind Wikipedia video tutorials in two languages – Hindi and Kannada. In March 2016, Wikiwomen Editathon was organised at Christ University, on the ocassion of Women's Day. A workshop was organised at Christ University where wikipedians from various institutions across the country gathered to enhance the Wikipedia Education Program and shared there experiences. In the current Academic year 2016-17, Christ University also started a Certificate Course in Wikipedia, in which students will learn basic editing and article writing on wiki.
Contribution of Christ University students to Sanskrit Wikisource and Sanskrit Wikipedia :-
June 2015 – October 2015
CIA 1
- 1st Semester Students – Typed "चम्पूभारतम्" on Sanskrit Wikisource
- 3rd Semester Students – Written an article on Sanskrit Wikipedia related to Culture and Language
CIA 3
- 1st Semester Students – Typed "मालविकाग्निमित्रम्" on Sanskrit Wikisource
- 3rd Semester Students – Added images to the articles (from commons) which were written by them in CIA 1
Outcome
Practice and familiarization with Sanskrit typing on Wikisource. As a result of this exercise "चम्पूभारतम्" and "मालविकाग्निमित्रम्" will be available for people around the world to read and study these incredible pieces of Sanskrit Literature.
November 2015 – March 2016
CIA 1
1st Semester Students – Typed about themselves on Sanskrit Wikipedia, which they later used for creating their Userpage on Sanskrit Wikipedia 3rd Semester Students – Written an article related to there subject (Ex :- Physics, Mathematics, Astronomy, etc.)
CIA 3
- 1st Semester Students – Created their Userpage on Sanskrit Wikipedia
- 3rd Semester Students – Added relevant images to the articles which were written by them in CIA 1
Outcome
These exercises familiarized students with creating a new article on wikipedia and students learned how to upload images on Wikimedia Commons. They are now using learning outcomes from this exercises for the Wikipedia Assigments of the year 2016-17.
Writing on wikipedia requires adequate research and for doing this assignments students reffered various books, websites and other sources. It promoted habit of doing research, gave a chance to interact with various people. It increased the number of articles on Sanskrit Wikipedia.
