Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon - IV edition

The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon aims at fostering new alliances between media freedom activists, journalists, media experts, and the Wikipedia and open-knowledge communities in order to boost the availability of accurate knowledge on media freedom-related issues in the largest open encyclopedia worldwide.

The fourth edition of the edit-a-thon will be held at the WikiBär, Gartenstraße 92, in Berlin-Mitte on Saturday 26 January 2019 from 10.00 AM to 6.00 PM.

If you cannot make it to Berlin but you want to join us nonetheless you may do it remotely!

The event is organised by Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (based in Trento, Italy) in cooperation with Wikimedia Deutschland and the Berlin community. It is part of the Wiki4MediaFreedom initiative, which aims to systematise, expand, and update Wikipedia entries on freedom of information and threatened journalism in Europe.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon aims at improving the quality, number and languages of articles on media freedom and pluralism-related contents in order to increase public knowledge of media freedom issues and to raise awareness of the need of more transparency and accessible information in this field.

To this aim, the Berlin's edit-a-thon will gather media freedom activists, journalists, media experts and a group of experienced Wikipedia volunteers and Wikidata experts.

After an introduction 4-5 hours of collaborative editing will follow, with experienced Wikipedia editors working side by side with participants to edit entries, verify sources and references, fill missing information, translating contents.

Participants will be provided with:

  • A list of articles in need to be improved;
  • A list of sources that can be used as references;
  • A list comprising a selection of quality articles proposed for translation into other languages, depending on the participants’ language skills.

Participants may edit in English, German or any other language they wish to use.

The edit-a-thon is a follow up to a GLAM project implemented in 2015 by OBC Transeuropa in cooperation with Wikimedia Italia as a part of the project European Centre for Press and Media Freedom and aiming at enriching and systematising the articles on media freedom and pluralism in Europe in several linguistic versions and training / assisting OBC Transeuropa’s staff to allow them to contribute autonomously in Wikipedia beyond the end of the GLAM project.

The Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon is at is IV Edition, after the successful experiences of the I edition held in Belgrade in November 2016 and the II edition held in Sofia in November 2017. The III edition will be hold in Madrid on January 18th 2019.

What you can do edit

You can contribute to improving media freedom and pluralism-related contents by:

  • Writing new articles on media freedom, pluralism, transparency and access to public information in Europe;
  • Editing and improving existing articles to add information, updates, sources;
  • Translating existing articles into other languages;

Participants may edit in English, German or any other language they wish to use.

  • Your laptop and power cords (we cannot provide computers for participants; tablets will be difficult to work on for this event);

Das Wiki4MediaFreedom-Edit-a-thon zielt darauf ab, neue Allianzen zwischen Aktivisten der Medienfreiheit, Journalisten, Medienexperten und der Wikipedia sowie Open-Knowledge-Communities zu fördern, um die Verfügbarkeit von genauem Wissen zu Fragen der Medienfreiheit in der größten offenen Enzyklopädie weltweit zu erhöhen.

Die vierte Ausgabe des Edit-a-thon findet am Samstag, den 26. Januar 2019 von 10.00 bis 18.00 Uhr im WikiBär statt, in der Gartenstraße 92 in Berlin-Mitte.

Die Veranstaltung wird vom Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (mit Sitz in Trient, Italien) in Zusammenarbeit mit Wikimedia Deutschland und der Berliner Community organisiert. Es ist Teil der Initiative Wiki4MediaFreedom, die Wikipedia-Einträge zur Informationsfreiheit und zu bedrohtem Journalismus in Europa systematisieren, erweitern und aktualisieren soll.

Das Wiki4MediaFreedom Edit-a-thon zielt darauf ab, die Qualität, die Anzahl und die Sprache von Artikeln zur Medienfreiheit und zum Inhalt des Pluralismus zu verbessern, um das öffentliche Wissen über Fragen der Medienfreiheit zu erhöhen und das Bewusstsein für das Bedürfnis nach mehr Transparenz und zugänglichen Informationen zu stärken.

Zu diesem Zweck versammelt der Edit-a-thon in Berlin AktivistInnen der Medienfreiheit, Journalisten, Medienexperten und eine Gruppe erfahrener Wikipedia-Freiwilliger und Wikidata-Experten.

Nach einer Einführung folgen 4-5 Stunden gemeinsames Editieren. Erfahrene Wikipedia-Autoren arbeiten Seite an Seite mit den Teilnehmern, um Einträge zu bearbeiten, Quellen und Einzelnachweise zu überprüfen, fehlende Informationen auszufüllen und Inhalte zu übersetzen.

Die Teilnehmer erhalten Folgendes:

  • Eine Liste der Artikel, die verbessert werden können.
  • Eine Liste von Quellen, die als Referenzen verwendet werden können.
  • Eine Liste mit einer Auswahl von Qualitätsartikeln, die je nach Sprachkenntnissen der Teilnehmer in andere Sprachen übersetzt werden können.

Die Teilnehmer können auf Englisch, Deutsch oder einer anderen Sprache, die sie verwenden möchten, arbeiten.

Das Edit-a-thon ist ein Nachfolger eines GLAM-Projekts, das 2015 von OBC Transeuropa in Zusammenarbeit mit Wikimedia Italia als Teil des Projekts Europäisches Zentrum für Presse- und Medienfreiheit umgesetzt wurde und darauf abzielt, die Artikel zur Medienfreiheit und zu systematisieren Pluralismus in Europa in mehreren Sprachversionen zu bereichern und Schulung / Unterstützung der Mitarbeiter von OBC Transeuropa, damit diese über das Ende des GLAM-Projekts hinaus autonom in Wikipedia beitragen können.

Dieses Wiki4MediaFreedom edit-a-thon ist die IV. Auflage, nach erfolgreichen Erfahrungen der I-Ausgabe im November 2016 in Belgrad und der II-Ausgabe im November 2017 in Sofia. Die III. Ausgabe findet am 18. Januar 2019 in Madrid statt.

Mittag- und Abendessen werden freundlicherweise von Wikimedia Deutschland angeboten.

Was kann man dort tun? edit

Es kann dazu beitragen werden, die Medienfreiheit und den Inhalt des Pluralismus zu verbessern, durch:

  • Schreiben neuer Artikel zu Medienfreiheit, Pluralismus, Transparenz und Zugang zu öffentlichen Informationen in Europa;
  • Bearbeiten und Verbessern vorhandener Artikel zum Hinzufügen von Informationen, Updates, Quellen;
  • Übersetzen vorhandener Artikel in andere Sprachen;

Die Teilnehmer können auf Englisch, Deutsch oder einer anderen Sprache, die sie verwenden möchten, bearbeiten.

Was soll ich mitbringen? edit

  • Laptop und das Netzkabel (wir können keine Computer für die Teilnehmer bereitstellen; es ist schwierig, bei dieser Veranstaltung an Tablets zu arbeiten);

Diese Liste ist nur ein Vorschlag: man kann daran teilnehmen, indem Artikel bearbeiten oder erstellen, die nicht aufgeführt sind, wenn sie unter das Thema Medienfreiheit fallen. Man kann auch Originalartikel schreiben, anstatt sie zu übersetzen.
