Episode #21 - Building Capacity for Tech Development

In the last episode of season 2, we talk about ways to distribute tech development based on projects and ideas from the global majority. Our guests describe the way they have been developing software around lexicographical data as well as community training around Wikidata, supported by a grant from Arcadia Fund acquired by Wikimedia Deutschland.

Our guests are...

  • Benedict Udeh, is a member of the Igbo Wikimedia User Group and the founder of the Ig Wikidata Hub which is the Wikidata arm of the User Group. He is the founder and program coordinator for Wiki Mentor Africa. Benedict also works for WMF as a movement communications specialist but will be speaking today as member of the Igbo Wikimedia User Group and the program coordinator for Wiki Mentor Africa.
  • Raisha Abdillah, is based in Jakarta, Indonesia, and has been part of the Wikimedia Movement since 2016, starting as a Wikidata contributor. She has a background in computer engineering and has organized many Wikidata-related events in Indonesia, including workshops, talks, trainings, and meetups. Right now, she is part of the Wikidata Software Collaboration Team and will tell us in a minute what her role is in this episode.
  • Maria Lechner, joined Wikimedia Deutschland in July 2022. As the project manager for the multiyear project “Software Collaboration for Wikidata”, funded by the Arcadia Fund, Maria manages the project resources, communicates with stakeholders, provides support for the project partners, and documents the project process to ensure the whole Movement can learn from this prototype of a transnational software collaboration.

Episode #20 - The Global Majority Speaks Out on Tech!

Last month, a text called the “Global Majority Wikimedia Technology Priorities" was published on Meta. This is a manifesto, signed by a growing number of Wikimedia organizations and individuals, which addresses decision making about technology in the Wikimedia Movement - particularly when it comes to creating technology that is designed for users of the Global Majority and in emerging communities. We talk to two of the initiators of the research and the text, and they relate their work to movement strategy and knowledge as a service.

  • Tanveer Hasan, works for the Center for Internet and Society, Bangalore, India. Prior to this he has worked in the Movement Strategy implementation grants team of the WMF and was part of the team that managed the development of MS
  • Éder Porto, is a member and products and technology manager at the Brazilian affiliate, Wiki Movimento Brasil. He oversees their tech team and has worked on the research mentioned in this episode.

Episode #19 - Charting the Movement Charter

In this episode we talk about the Wikimedia Movement Charter - the “artifact” that spells out who we are, what values we have, and what roles and responsibilities the various Movement bodies have. The close-to final draft of the charter is now online for comments and review. We talk with two members of the Movement Charter Drafting Committee, and a community member involved in the original strategy formation. We touch upon the history of the charter, the motivation and work that went into it. We learn what if affirms and what it adds. We also find out why it ended up being a short document!

  • Ciell, has a professional background in Social Work and has been an admin on the Dutch Wikipedia since 2006. She is also very active within the international community. She is an admin on Wikimedia Commons and a member of the international Wiki Loves Monuments team. And most importantly for the purpose of today’s podcast: she is part of the MCDC.
  • Daria Cybulska, is the Director of Programmes at Wikimedia UK, having joined the chapter in 2012. She is a Churchill Fellow, investigating Central Asia’s online civil society, and an AKO Storytelling Institute Fellow working on misinformation and information literacy skills.
  • Alek Tarkowski, is a digital activist who joined the Wikimedia Movement back in 2017 during the strategy process. He is the co-founder and Strategy Director at the Open Future think tank and sits on the Board of Directors of Creative Commons. He is also the chair of the Oversight Board of Centrum Cyfrowe, a Polish digital think-and-do tank.

  • Tamzin Hadasa Kelly, Wikimedian since 2012. Tamzin has written Wikipedia articles on topics ranging from LGBTQ subjects, to unusual legal cases, to Mike Tyson’s tattoos, and is one of the few openly non-binary admins on the English Wikipedia.
