Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions edit

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:23, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Equipment request edit

User:Bluerasberry and User:I JethroBT (WMF), it seems that Grants:Project/Rapid/Learn does not lend itself to pursuing permanent equipment purchase. I am unsure of any way to pursue such a request. Should I request another one-day equipment rental?--TonyTheTiger (talk) 01:15, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Another option might be long-term loan from a Wikimedia chapter like Wiki NYC. Wiki NYC might purchase it then provide it to you for 6 months or whatever like an equipment lending library. I am not sure if sharing makes sense, but if I understand correctly, the WMF does support equipment purchases by organizations who will share with multiple Wikipedians. If this happened, I am not sure that Wiki NYC has the management capacity to oversee such a program, so this might not be feasible.
Short term rentals are fine to request. Btw - can you show me whatever you took the last time you did a rental? Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:43, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
User:Bluerasberry I would be very interested in chapter loan. What would the proper channel be (I.e., who should I contact? Pharos?).--TonyTheTiger (talk) 15:58, 2 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@TonyTheTiger: That's correct-- our grants do allow equipment purchases in some circumstances, but there needs to be a plan and system setup (e.g. a requests system) to encourage sharing that equipment with other contributors, and some indication that members in the community are able and likely to use it. I think for now, a rental makes more sense to do if you are the only one using the equipment, but as Lane notes above, a rental agreement with a chapter would work as well.
