List of Wikipedias table
editIf you want this change to stick, you'll have to get consensus on the talk page — and, in particular, get the assent of User:Emaus, who runs the bot that updates that page periodically - dcljr (talk) 00:38, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- OK, so you've made essentially the same change again. Can you please explain to me how this version is better than what was already there? Both approaches depend on Template:Wikipedia rank by size and Template:NUMBEROF, except the way you're doing it seems to "hardcode" an order to the entries, whereas the version before did not. So, why should we do it "your way"? - dcljr (talk) 07:33, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry for the late reply. The table was a rough draft, but the reason I've made those changes is so that it could be updated automatically by a bot via Template:WP7, Template:NUMBEROF and Template:Wikipedia rank by size rather than directly by a bot, like User:EmausBot has been doing since the 14th of April in 2013 until recently (the 15th of October this year, in 2022). Do you want me to revert my edits to the table? PK2 (talk) 12:12, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
- ,@PK2, three questions:
- Will a new language version be added automatically or will it have to be entered manually?
- Is the sorting by number of articles automatic or we have to change it manually?
- What is the usefulness and relevance of the last column (percentage)?
- I also worn @Dcljr that he may not have seen your answer. Antonio1952 (talk) 20:19, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
- Both approaches rely on the same templates (PK2, I guess you didn't notice what exactly you were replacing) and therefore have the same strengths and weaknesses, except, like I said, PK2's approach seems to hardcode an order to the entries. Therefore, I am thinking we should just go back to the shorter code that automatically lists the entries in descending order by article count, and try to improve that. PK2, if you haven't already, please read my comments at Talk:List of Wikipedias#Convert to template-based approach and Talk:List of Wikipedias#Dealing with transcluding subpages for context. It should be relatively straightforward to add "Depth" to that table, although it looks like we might be bumping up against some script limits (see the discussion I just pointed to). I'll see what happens when I try to add that column. Finally, my answers to Antonio1952's questions are:
- I'm not sure if new wikis are detected automatically, but it looks like probably yes, since the last two times wikis were created (10 October 2022 and 17 August 2022), they were added to commons:Data:Wikipedia statistics/data.tab on the same day — before the stats had even been initialized, in fact).
- The way I was doing it (based on a talk page post by User:GreenC), the order is determined automatically.
- It looks like that's the article count of each wiki as a percentage of the total article count across all (active? listed?) wikis.
- In addition to the Depth column, I have not yet done anything about listing closed wikis. This might be done at the bottom of the table, in "hardcoded" rows, although that wouldn't necessarily preserve the correct sort order. Or it could be done in a separate table. (BTW, I don't need to be pinged specifically to see replies here, but I might not respond right away.) - dcljr (talk) 02:33, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Updating pages in translation system
editHi @PK2: Your update to Help:Special page has entirely broken it. Updating a page that is in the translation system needs some bit of knowledge concerning the anatomy of these pages. At the least, I could say, removal of <translate> tags alongside the t-unit marker numbers is not a good practice. It could sometimes ruin the whole page. Please take cognizance of this in the future. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:30, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- if you are removing an entire block, it is okay to remove the translate tags and t-unit marker numbers along with that but if you are just updating it, you need to keep the structure intact and just do the updating. Thanks. ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:32, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
