- It looks as though Barry was posting to every user who signed up as interest in Wikikids. While we didn't explicitly ask to be contacted in this way, I don't view that as spam -- we're all interested in the topic and he is only trying to help a new wikiproject get off the ground. –SJ · talk | translate 20:56, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
- Unless the users that he posted his message to are indeed part of the Wikikids project, it can be misinterpreted as WP:CANVASSing people to simply join his project, something that can be viewed as disruptive, mainly because it is either a biased message or it constantly triggers the "New messages" banner. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 23:45, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
- I was indeed posting to the interested list at Wikikids, as I thought it would be of interest to them. Please let me know if there is a more 'appropriate' way of trying to get something actually happening in this area. Barry Desborough 03:40, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- I took into account that you were posting on the talkpages of those who showed their interest in the project, but still - I would not do it myself (people can lose interest, forget that they signed for something and forget they didn't remove their names, etc.) What I would do would be to post your invitation on general mailing lists, as well as try to involve the contributors of Simple English Wikipedia and Wikijunior (part of the Wikibooks initiative) - they are the closest to preparing kid-oriented material and they would be probably willing to help. Try the village pumps of the projects and their mailing lists. More info can be found here. - I tried Wikibooks years ago. I've looked at mailing lists, I've looked for incubators. Nothing I could find that serves the purpose. The environment is very difficult and obscure for all but the aficionados. The wikipedia foundation has become even more labyrinthine, fossilized and bureaucratic than it was the last time I tried to get some posteriors moving. It is so hostile to new initiatives. Hello Barry,
I think that we could get started here on the incubator wiki with no trouble (there has been a recent recommendation to look more seriously into a project for children); or on wikispaces where you have been working. I certainly agree that the way to start is to get to work on some initial models for pages, and to recruit some editors to help out, as vikidia and others have done.
