Welcome edit

Hi, welcome to Meta. You might want to have a look at some of the pages we already have here to avoid duplication. For example, WikiWar could perhaps be merged with Edit wars. Also, we already have many help pages, which you'll find linked to from Help:Contents. Pages like MediaWiki Markup already exist at Help:Editing. I noticed you wrote we don't support back links. Have a look at the category system which might provide you some of the functionality you were looking for with pages like Please Fix. Another note, we don't use =first level headings= as the page title is a first level heading, so headings you add to a page should start with ==2nd level== instead. Hope that helps. Fourth level headers edit

Yes, fourth level headers work. In fact, you can go down to six. We don't have a voice conferencing system, but the next best thing is IRC, and there are a number of Wikimedia IRC channels that you might want to consider visiting. Angela 16:40, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Use of this wiki edit

Hello Aaron, welcome on meta-wiki. before you start creating pages, please make yourself familiar with the purpose of this wiki. meta-wiki is no general purpose wiki but has a few cleary defined uses: organizing wikimedia foundation and its projects, providing information about wikimedia and its projects and creating the mediawiki user's guide. pages like Compression fit in neither category (we already have wikipedia articles in xx languages about this subject you can link to if needed). for personal comments please use the talk pages. greetings, --Elian 00:38, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

New pages edit

Hi Aaron, welcome to meta! Thanks for contributing so many of your ideas here. Please spend as much time merging your new pages into old pages, as you do creating more new pages. In general, we have too many small policy and philosophy pages, rather than too few... and people are much more likely to read what you contribute if you find a way to merge your thoughts with the ideas of those who have come before you. The navigation system is what is broken, I do try to merge my thoughts with those before me, however, small pages allow for better mixing, and I actually break up pages that are too big, puting them into multiple pages of manageable size, and linking between them so that they are findable! Internationalization edit

internationalization is part of Template:Hc. See the wikisource of Help:Contents for an example of how to pass parameters to it. This is also described in the editorial guidelines. Please discuss things before reorganizing them.--Eloquence

I really don't know what to do with you. Why do you create User contributions when there already is an existing, more comprehensive page in the Help: namespace (where it belongs), clearly listed in the table of contents? And why do you mix your personal feature request into a description of a feature? Feature requests exclusively belong on Bugzilla so the developers can track and organize them. They should not be put into random wiki pages.

A handbook needs to be done in an organized, structured manner. Stream of consciousness insertion of random thoughts really doesn't help.-Eloquence

I responded on his talk page, It just plain doesn't make sence to have feature requests be exclusively on the bugzilla... and that is true that they should not be on random wiki pages.. they should have good names, that aid in tracking.

MediaWiki feature list edit

There's enough work left to be done in the Help: namespace without you messing things up further. It has been a huge pain in the ass to import the help pages to Wikinews, because there are too many internal links to Meta, and because not all relevant pages are in the Help: namespace, for example. Your edits to the feature list are unhelpful. This page is directly referenced from the MediaWiki website. It needs a decent introduction, not a separate, crappy little "Choose MediaWiki" page that would just end up accumulating the same content and sounding like an advertisement. Comment on my talk page

The page needed work, and I do like the state of the page now better than when we started. Working together isn't easy... and we may have to compromize some things, or work on solving a problem rather than bickering about it. The namespace seporation of content is icky... it makes the content hard to write and maintain. We need to create a script that can move pages to and frow between namespaces... and a... (I don't know how to describe it sucinctly... ) way to make the link "bob" link to "help:bob" first, then if that doesn't exist, "bob" in the main namespaces... We need to have the links reference their own namespace first, so that they can be moved.. and so that there arn't namespace conflicts... I want to have the "help" namespace reserved for help on my wiki! I don't want mediawiki documentation in that namespace!!!
Also, lets try to keep content on-topic... if another page links to "feature-list" but it's really supposed to be a "why mediawiki" page, then make a "why mediawiki" page...

1) Namespace separation: Please work within the constraints of the current software instead of demanding changes to it. The separation of content into the Help: namespace is absolutely essential for importing the help documents into other wikis, including Wikimedia's projects. Any violation of that separation has to be fixed manually during the import process. That is just not viable and not scalable. Only the Help: namespace ensures that we can run a script and easily extract all the required pages. Any page that is MediaWiki documentation must therefore be in that namespace. Whether you want to use the Help: namespace for something else in your project is irrelevant. You are free to run any kind of search and replace script on the Help: pages before importing them, to change the "Help:" namespace to something else. But our work has to be oriented towards the most common user, and that will be someone who sets up a MediaWiki installation from scratch, and who does not want Help:Contents to point to a blank page, but to the actual documentation. Enforcing namespace separation is the best way to do that.

2) MediaWiki feature list introduction: The purpose of the introduction is to give people who come there from http://www.mediawiki.org/ some crucial links for comparing MediaWiki to other wiki engines. Unless we create a comparison matrix or something similar, there is no need to do this on a separate page, and it is only confusing and distracting. Feel free to edit the introduction down a bit, but please keep all the links, and perhaps add more.--Eloquence 02:07, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I suggested adding pre { overflow: auto; } to the css, which makes individual scrollbars for each pre section in firefox, but apparently people didn't like the idea. it doesn't work in IE as written, but there are workarounds. Dredging it back up, I guess. - Omegatron 05:40, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
