Content Enrichment edit

Punjabi translation of Quran Majeed, relicensed by Prof. Mohammed Jamil, consists 876 pages

What?
Most of the books on Punjabi Wikisource are old books and they are in Public Domain. To provide more content, CIS-A2K continued with content enrichment program coordinated with Punjabi Wikimedians through scanning the rare books from different libraries and different organizations. To provide latest books, CIS-A2K had a discussion with some authors to release their copyright for Punjabi Wikisource.
When? & Where?
Books were scanned and uploaded from July 2020 to November 2020 by collecting them from different parts of Punjab, India. All the books were uploaded on Wikimedia Commons.
How?
CIS-A2K uses Scansnap SV600 scanner for scanning and we have found books from local libraries, Bhai Kahn Singh Library of Punjabi University Patiala and by using local contacts. It was impossible to do fieldwork in the time of COVID-19 pandemic. So, most of the books were collected as soft-copies from authors & publishers. Before the scanning process, we checked out the license of the book and then we did the post-processing after scanning. After editing the book and creating pdf, we have uploaded it on Wikimedia Commons. After that, we have created the Index page of the book on Punjabi Wikisource.
Impact made:

  1. CIS-A2K uploaded 26 books on Punjabi Wikisource and these books contain a total of 4,819 pages. The page contains more details about these books can be seen here. CIS-A2K focused on relicensing during this time in Punjabi language. Because relicensing was not done before in Punjabi language. 25 books were relicensed out of 26 books and they are related to 9 authors.
  2. Collaboration with Gurbhajan Gill

Follow up:

  • 40 books will be uploaded by the month of May 2021.

Study on Content Creation on Punjabi Wikipedia edit

This research study was undertaken with the objective of analysing the nature of the content produced on Eastern Punjabi Wikipedia, primarily to understand knowledge gaps in the kind of content here, from the perspective of Punjabi language contributors and users, as well as challenges for creating new content. The methods for the study comprised of semi-structured interviews with five active members of the Punjabi Wikimedians User Group. The research highlighted several existing challenges for contributors and users, such as the lack of adequate and high-quality content about the Punjab region and good online references and inordinate focus on the content translation instead of creating new content. As User:Stalinjeet Brar notes:

“Most of us are focusing on content translation. But the need is content creation. Even the translated articles related to Punjab are not well-maintained articles and most of them are not updated for a long time. We need to work on this.”

The study also offered some recommendations based on the data collected. More details can be seen here about this research project. A complete report of this research project will be published by early next year, to be followed by a Punjabi translation.
