Progress Report for the Period - July 2017 to December 2017 edit

Purpose of the report edit

This form is for organizations receiving Annual Plan Grants to report on their impact after completing the full year of their grant. The time period covered in this form will be the first 6 months of each grant (e.g. 1 January - 30 June of the current year). This form includes four sections; addressing global metrics, program stories, financial information, and compliance. Please contact APG/FDC staff if you have questions about this form, or concerns submitting it by the deadline. After submitting the form, organizations will also meet with APG staff to discuss their progress.

Global metrics overview - all programs edit

We are trying to understand the overall outcomes of the work being funded across our grantees' programs. Please use the table below to let us know how your programs contributed to the Global Metrics. We understand not all Global Metrics will be relevant for all programs, so feel free to put "0" where necessary. For each program include the following table and

  1. Next to each required metric, list the outcome achieved.
  2. Where necessary, explain the context behind your outcome.
  3. In addition to the Global Metrics as measures of success for your programs, there is another table format in which you may report on any OTHER relevant measures of your programs success

Telling your program stories - all programs edit

Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.

  • We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
  • Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
  • We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
  • We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
  • You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

Institutional Partnerships edit

Another initiative in content generation is taken by Mahrashtra Rajya Marathi Vishwakosh Nirmiti Mandal by coming up with 20 volumes and now it has pioneered a decentralized form of Knowledge generation by establishing 60 Dnyanamandals for different knowledge streams. As of now, this marathi encyclopedia contains 18,000+ articles on various subjects. Foundation of this Knowledge base can be achieved through structured as well as amorphous or non-structured way. Vishwakosh presents the earlier approach while Marathi Wikipedia presents the later. Both of these ways lead to the same goal of Knowledge creation in Marathi. Thus both Vishwakosh and Wikipedia are joining forces for conducting programs for authors.Taking into consideration this noble cause, Prof. Madhav Gadgil, Marathi Vishwakosh Nirmiti Mandal, IUCAA,CIS-A2K, Rawat’s Nature Academy and Saptahik Vivek Shilpakar Charitrakosh Prakalp took initiative to organize ‘Wikipedia-Vishwakosh Workshop for Science Writers’ in Pune. Major organizations working for scientific knowledge propagation and diffusion like, Marathi Vigyan Parishad, Vijnana Bharati, Srushti Dnyan and Sakal Trust are also coming forward for technical facilitation and coordination.

The workshop participants included science writers, organisations working for science promotion and active citizen science community. Total 330 people across the state participated. The workshop inspired science related institutions to take initiative for content generation. Series of workshops of science writers, maths writers, astronomy enthusiasts were conducted. Also content donation to Wikisource and Commons has started. Science magazines have also announced to re-licence their previous issues. Noted scientists Jayant & Mangala Narlikar, Madhav Gadgil have donated their books for Wikisource. Management Guru M.G. Ranganekar also donated his 2 popular books. In the workshop, many librarians also shown interest in taking free knowledge movement forward by taking up Wikipedia Library project. Mass awareness was generated through the press and electronic media. All the leading newspapers covered the event extensively. Two editors wrote special features in Sunday issues. Student community expressed interest in working for technical issues by taking up internship projects. Total 6 edit-a-thons were conducted in various institutions and organisations.

Thematic Workshops edit

There are well-known organizations working on social, cultural and environmental issues in Maharashtra. Working at the grassroots level, these organizations possess materials and resources that are crucial to reserve as knowledge in Marathi. CIS-A2K started networking with these groups and conducted thematic workshops on rural culture & developmental issues, women, water, science and environment. As a result, process of forming specific 'Communities of Interest' is initiated. Two thematic workshops were conducted for science writers and mathematics experts also.

Exploring new communities edit

The events were organised in collaboration with government language departments and community based organisations. An event was organised at Law college to generate awareness about legal issues in Wikimedia Projects. We also started process of launching Wikipedia Library project in Librarians Association event in Pune University.

Voluntary group in Satara is eager to implement innovative projects for the active citizens and field activists. It has decided to integrate Wikimedia Projects and training modules for capacity building of citizens science movement volunteers. To get the overall introduction of Wikimedia Projects and basic skills, this training program was organised for botany & Ayurveda experts in the organisation. The group is also connected with Aryangla Vaidyak Mahavidyalaya in Satara.

Sterlite Tech Foundation and Jnana Prabodhini are the organisations working for Women's Empowerment in Velhe Block of Pune District Maharashtra. Jeewan Jyoti - Sterlite’s flagship initiative aims to address these issues by empowering the under privileged sections of society, especially rural women with equal learning opportunities and with professional training courses in their formative years; thereby providing them with sustainable income opportunities. CIS-A2K acting as technical resource agency to develop content on these subjects. Last year, we conducted two workshops for rural women .The women worked on village articles and development issues. For the year 2018, the thematic approach is taken to enrich content on Rural Culture on Wikimedia projects. Two workshops were conducted to develop this theme.

Extensive discussions started with different prominent stakeholders in online content generation for developing a holistic approach & strategies. These include - ThinkMaharashtra.com,Rural Relations, Let's Talk Sexuality, Sanshodhan, Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited and Marathi Vidnyan Parishad.

Meet-ups edit

Capacity building sessions with existing editors were conducted at 3 places. The follow-up activity at Vigyan Ashram, Pabal and Pune resulted into quality content generation.

Wikidata Workshop edit

To build the resources on Wikidata, Two day Wikidata Workshop was organised in collaboration with WMF and MKCL. Community members actively participated in the workshop. Some organisations like Datameet, Engineering College groups and PyLadies Pune working on Data Management were also involved in the workshop for future associations.

Exploratory Wiki Technical Workshop edit

A two day Basic Wiki technical workshop was conducted for PG students of Mathematics dept. at Pune University. The students were oriented towards technical needs in Wiki environment and potential of combining their academic projects with the same. Due to time constraints, we could not involve them in internships this year. It was decided to start the process in the beginning of next academic year.

GLAM edit

Content donation edit

Technical Training of volunteers from Vigyan Ashram for Commons upload & OCR was conducted. After this process has started to bring Copyright free books on Commons under Category:Books in Marathi. OCR of 15 books on Wikisource was completed using OCR4Wikisource code in Python. Content donation started after IUCAA workshop. Books released under CC BY 4.0 by Jayant Narlikar, Mangala Narlikar, Sharu Ranganekar, Madhav Gadgil. The process has been started with Manoos Pratishthan, Sandarbh science magazine.

Wikipedia Library Project edit

In continuation to the discussions with the librarians in the past two months, event was organised by Pune University Library & Information Science Alumni Association (PULISAA). Here, about 50 active librarians from various institutes across state came together. We discussed about enriching Wikisource with valuable copyright free reference books, indexing of digitised books, Conference on digitisation and Wikipedia Library Project.

Wikisource Internship edit

With the initiative of community and institution, Wikisource Internship Program is in progress at Garware College of Commerce in Pune. CIS-A2K is acting as facilitator. The students are actively involved in proof-reading of old marathi book written by famous economist G.C.Bhate in 1910.

Upcoming events edit

  • Mini Train the Trainer (TTT)- Many Marathi community members in different regions of the state are eager to work as trainers for new aspiring community in their areas. They have posted request for organising such program on village pump. A program will be conducted in next quarter.
  • Technical Workshop - Marathi Community has expressed needs for templates, infoboxes and gadgets from time to time. A workshop is proposed in second quarter.
  • Institutional Edit-a-thons - On the occasion of Marathi Bhasha Fortnight and Day, 6 workshops are proposed in collaboration with State government departments.
  • Thematic workshops - Organisations working in Water, Women and Environment sector have taken initiative to create systematic content generation. The workshops for these groups are proposed in next 6 months.
  • Wikisource Workshops - The previous project with Maharashtra Granthottejak Sanstha will be consolidated. Workshops for interested libraries having rare books is proposed. The proof-reading sprints would also be organised.
  • Photothons - Thematic workshops to upload images on commons are proposed with photographers' clubs.
  • Innovative Pilots - Citizen science movements in science, astronomy and water sector have proposed some ideas to empower communities with content generation in Wikimedia projects. These pilots will be done in next 6 months.
