Request to add a new 1 million section - Wikipedias
A result of the system to list Wikipedias around the globe by there visitor counts and not there number of articles is that a large Wikipedia, the Dutch language Wikipedia, has lost its high value spot around the globe some time ago. But the listing below the globe is still like it used to be. A Wikipedia like the Dutch language wiki is now listed as the same as a Wikipedia that has barely 100,000 articles.
I suggest to make a new section, a 100 000 000+ section and list there all the Wikipedias that are in that class. --Walter 07:14, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- I Support your suggestion. Trijnstel 13:02, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- "100 000 000+"? Is that a typo? That's, err, more than a million. --MZMcBride 16:12, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed. 100 000 000+ is for later. For now 1 000 000+ will do. --Walter 23:23, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- But it could also be done, add a section 100 000 000+ ... as a humorous and ambitious note. --Walter 23:39, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
- There are only four million-article wikis right now, so the new section would look rather sparse. But you're right, a non–top 10 wiki has reached a million articles, and a couple years ago I proposed adding the new section at that point. Do you think we should wait for any of the 800,000+ wikis to reach a million, or is this the right time? – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 09:41, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Don't link to static resources directly
Currently this template is linking to ./skins/monobook/main.css
there are 3 problems with this:
- It is an unstable file path that can change in MediaWiki core
(and also changes after every Wikimedia deployment due to the dynamic link to the current MediaWiki static cache) - It does not represent what MediaWiki uses in the Monobook skin
(Monobook uses more css files, not just main.css. This is currently causing some links to have an odd fixed underline that doesn't match the Monobook style) - It is somewhat inefficient
(using the ResourceLoader-optimized version and loading from bits.wikimedia.org is faster)
Solution: Replace this:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="//bits.wikimedia.org/skins-1.20wmf1/monobook/main.css?303-4" type="text/css" media="screen, projection" />
with:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="//bits.wikimedia.org/en.wikipedia.org/load.php?debug=false&lang=en&modules=mediawiki.legacy.shared%7Cskins.monobook&only=styles&skin=monobook&*" type="text/css" media="all">
I'll make this edit myself, but I'm reporting it here for documentation. –Krinkletalk 20:05, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- We really should avoid using MediaWiki's stylesheets at all. The portal only makes use of the basic rules anyways. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 16:57, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Update value for Portuguese
Hi!
Could someone update the number for Portuguese Wikipedia? We recently added our namespace 102 to the $wgContentNamespaces (as was already the case for the arwiki), so the number needs to be updated from 718 000+ to 737 000+ (the exact number is 737 662 at the moment). Firefox 13.0 problem
I am using Firefox 13.0 for Ubuntu 12.04 and the portal page appears with the center of the Wikipedia globe at the top of the displayed page. I hope it is not the HTTPS-Everywhere (2.0.5) add-on. I do not have this problem when using Chromium 18.0.1025.151 (Developer Build 130497 Linux) Ubuntu 12.04. If this is a Firefox bug as I suspect please leave me a message at w:en:User talk:Allen4names. Allen4names (talk) 03:28, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- I have FF 13.0.1 and HE on Ubuntu 11.10 and I currently have no such problems. Nemo 20:19, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- I tried some of the other portals and only the Wikipedia one gives me this problem. I don't know what is causing it but I hope it is just an insolated annoyance. Allen4names (talk) 06:50, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Inputbox to search for a Wikipedia
I propose adding a second search box, see https://toolserver.org/~robin/www/ where I implemented it as an example. You can enter a language code or name (in your browser language, the autonym or in English) and it will go to the Wikipedia in that language if it exists, or the test wiki on Incubator if it is started, or show a page with links and information. If no language match, it will show an error though. The language names coverage isn't optimal yet but will improve in the (near) future, and the search should too. The search box is an alternative to the very long list of Wikipedias below it. The only concern I see is that I cannot find a language-neutral label instead of "Find Wikipedia in language". Regards, SPQRobin (talk) 00:35, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
- I also added it to the /temp page. SPQRobin (talk) 00:46, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
- No opposition, so Done.[1] The feature works and is much needed; it needs to be refined but it will be, with the mw:Universal Language Selector at the latest. Nemo 20:16, 11 July 2012 (UTC)
- FYI, I made a blog post about it. SPQRobin (talk) 20:59, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
- @Nemo_bis: Please be more careful next time before syncing. If you previewed the /temp page and used the JavaScript console you would've immediately seen the obvious ReferenceError being thrown by the broken code Robin provided (screenshot). I don't like judging people, so I'll put this in a self-solving way: If you don't know what a JavaScript console is, refrain from synchronization actions. If you know what it is, then don't worry, an honest mistake anyone could've made that was fortunately fixed soon after. –Krinkletalk 14:53, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
Please change Bân-lâm-gú to 10,000+
this wiki now has more than 10,000+ articles, the link should be moved to 10,000+, Regards, --TheChampionMan1234 (talk) 23:38, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
- Some deletions brought the wiki below 10,000 again: it's 9,975 now. --Nemo 22:54, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
Estonian Wikipedia (et.wikipedia.org) reached 100 000 articles
The Estonian version of Wikipedia (et.wikipedia.org) reached 100 000 articles yesterday. The current article count stands at 100 064. Would it be possible to update the portal accordingly? Best regards and thanks in advance. -- Ohpuu (talk) 19:22, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
- Done --Nemo 22:54, 18 September 2012 (UTC)
- One more problem with it: there should also be Estonian in language selection and 'Otsi' in the top of it. Kruusamägi (talk) 06:41, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Scots Wikipeida
Is now past the 10k mark and so should be moved from the 1000 section, if possible. Avic (talk) 10:53, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Formatting of search label
The search label right now is defined as an unmodified h5 tag. In most browsers, this is giving it 18px/1.75em of bottom margin, creating a huge amount of whitespace between the label and the actual search form. Visually, they do not seem to be connected at all. Would anyone object to me changing the <h5> to <h5 style="margin-bottom:0.2em;">? Or if inline styles are discouraged, a similar CSS definition in the CSS block. Kaldari (talk) 00:57, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

- You should sync as well. See this comparison. – Allen4names (talk) 19:37, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've reverted the change because it adds inline styles on the wikipedia-specific portal page (which is bad since they are disconnected from the main stylesheet and cause issues when updating the portal layout). Please write the correct css rules on MediaWiki:Gadget-wm-portal.css so that other portals are also updated (of course test the styles from your browser developer tools before saving and thus pushing it live). Also, as reminded on virtually every single edit page here: "Admins: Don't be lazy, use /temp as well." –Krinkletalk 00:56, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
