Talk:Wiki Loves Sport/Editions/2020
Awesome automated header for an event that doesn't currently exist and a decision to push for equity of outcome despite the fact it's impossible. BRA-VO. Buffs (talk) 18:36, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
Violation of NPOV while pushing the radical far-left agenda. Please re-word or remove. Seb az86556 (talk) 11:22, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Why is this being shoved down our throats? No political banners, please.—Fezzy1347 (talk) 12:35, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Buffs, Seb az86556, and Fezzy1347: As I answered to Rhododendrites below, the Olympics and Paralympics Games don't currently exist as they were postponed in 2021, but nothing stops Wikipedians of various languages to write about sport during this time. The gender equity is one of UN's SDGs goal our movement "adopted" and builded a whole Wikimania edition. Is also part of increasing the diversity that our project deals with. About rewording, what are you suggesting? Although I doubt that the gender gap would also be seen as a political banner, but is what we do. --Camelia (talk) 14:50, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Camelia.boban: With all due respect, Camelia, what we do is creating an encyclopedia. We should be as true to facts as possible. What led me here was the header: "Create awareness on sport and gender equality in sport inside your community. Enjoy Wiki Loves Sport 2020!" It is deeply misleading because everybody can understand it by it's own political perspective, so some people may feel even offended by it and some other may think that they are supposed to discriminate men in favour of woman, which obviously isn't the case (or is it?), because we talk about gender equality. Furthermore the page we are discussing right now doesn't explain it either. I propose to change the header to more neutral, f.ex.: "Join a multilingual online edit-a-thon about sport to help Wikipedia grow! Wiki Loves Sport 2020!" and add a little explaination on how exactly are we as editors supposed to support gender equality because it is unclear right now. Best regards. — Wojtek Mazi (talk) 18:29, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Buffs, Seb az86556, and Fezzy1347: In case any of you are interested in generally giving input on banners, the CentralNotice proposals page could always use more participation. It would be preferable if issues with banners could be brought up in advance, rather than after the banner is already running, so the pending proposals may be worth looking over at least occasionally. Per the guidelines, the CentralNotice process is consensus-driven. --Yair rand (talk) 06:30, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Yair rand:, see, this is the first time I even learned there was such a page to raise concerns beforehand... Seb az86556 (talk) 12:56, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
CentralNotice seems premature?
editIt links to this page, but this page doesn't really say anything about what's going on. The space that I would assume would explain the initiative instead answers an unasked question, "when will this take place". After that we have .. coins? Just needs more info (which I am not equipped to add). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 22:21, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Rhododendrites:. Why do you think the site notice is premature? The event started on July 24th, we didn't ask it immediately in order to not overlap with another event organized by Wikimedia Spain, Wiki Loves the Olympics. What is going on? A multilingual online edit-a-thon about sport (especially women in sport, as we are a project that covers the gender gap, but not exclusively) during what should have been the Olympic and Paralympic Games (postponed to August 2021). I changed the template. Coins? Why not? Was an image to illustrate that planned event, but is not strictly necessary to have them. --Camelia (talk) 14:37, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Camelia.boban: Premature not in timing, but because this page doesn't seem ready. As I wrote above, there's no information about what this actually is on the page the banner goes to. What it is, what's the background, how to get involved, etc. I'd expect whatever page the banner points to to have all of this. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:46, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- I re-wrote completely the page, what do you think now? --Camelia (talk) 16:27, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

I'm just really curious how you came up with the list of countries to run the centralnotice on, since there seems to be quite a lot of confusion. It also interferes with central notice plans made in countries like Austria. Braveheart (talk) 10:25, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- By filling all on the request (languages, countries and projects) ☺️. We wanted to involve more people possible and August is typically a less active month due for holidays. We cannot know every event in every country, I chose to not interfere with other events I knew, for example asking to start the banner from August 15th and not July 24th, after ending Wiki Loves the Olympics organized by WMES. As I saw, the banner is not enabled in many countries/languages that have other events in act (ar, bn, de, he, hi, hy ecc.), where we have participants and local coordinators. --Camelia (talk) 12:37, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
