Scoring criteria

edit

My proposal is to remove from the scoring criteria those regarding 'good' and 'featured article' as there are very significant differences in the rating systems across different wikis. These criteria posses a high degree of subjectivity, as the same 10k article could be evaluate as featured article on a wiki or C class or bellow on other wikis. --Macreanu Iulian (talk) 07:50, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I understand your thinking. However, the system will never be perfectly just. Why I am hesitant to remove it is because these points we promote quality contributions. If we get a 'good' or 'featured article' that will also mean that the article get a lot more visibility, which would be great in my opinion. I did however reduce the points gained for creating a 'featured article' to 50 points. John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 09:13, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if there is any difference between creation of a new article and creation of a translation of an existing article. I can translate a 2Kb-stub (+5 for translation and +2 for adding 2Kb), then replace them with 20Kb of sourced content (+18 for 18Kb of content), thus getting 25 points. If I just create a new article that is not a translation, I will get just 25 points for 25Kb. This sounds somewhat wrong, isn't it? I would suggest to give 5 points for any new article and not just for a new translation — NickK (talk) 01:17, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your question and comment NickK.
All the points try to encourage participants to create high quality articles from the start. As this contest have a lot of beginners we want to encourage translation of articles instead of creating new ones. The reason is that this reduces the need to understand the relevance criteria and then hopefully reduces the risk of their first contribution to be deleted. Having different point systems for beginners and experienced editors would not be a good solution for a number of reasons.
If you notice someone trying to game the system as in your example, please let me know (preferably in a private direct message) and the organizing team will look into it. Thanks, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:19, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@John Andersson (WMSE): Well, I can be this person. I might be interested to join as an experienced user, but I hate translations. On some topics I have low-quality articles in other wikis, but of course I can translate them just as a formality if it brings me +5 points, and then expand them. I do agree it's a sort of loophole, but if it is legal I might want to use it — NickK (talk) 20:40, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
I really hope you join and have fun in the Challenge!
I also hope that you do so without intentionally trying to find loopholes. There are indeed a number of them. :-)
At the end of the contest we will look at a subsection of the contributions and if the organizing team find that there are major issues we will adjust points at our discretion, as stated in the rules (mainly if there is a close call). If any of you are unsure, please ask in advance. Thanks, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 18:23, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

suggested articles

edit

Who decides the suggested articles which get +5 points? I suggest to make this list as culturally diverse as possible (e.g. not just European-centric or Western-centric). Otherwise the competition and the results will be skewed in favour of users from certain cultures. HaEr48 (talk) 19:08, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

All of the local organizers can suggest articles, so I am believe that this will provide a rather diverse list. We will encourage the organizers to add them during the coming days. John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 09:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)anReply

Mark for translation

edit

John Can you mark this for translation? Thank you.106.209.170.174 12:03, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

It is marked for translation now, but I am failing to add the last paragraph as a separate translation bit, so as of now that section is not included. John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 13:48, 7 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Project Duration

Greetings John Andersson (WMSE)!

I would like to know if this competition has ended or has the date been extended?

--Uzoma 22:28, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

You can join the Challenge at any time during this time and present articles you have created or improved between 8 March-8 April. I hope that answers your question. Scoring: source and pictures

edit

Can you explain me please these 2 rules of scoring: "+0.5 point for each image added to a Wikipedia article in any language (including your own photos). +1 point for each new source you add to an existing Wikipedia article in any language." Could you give me some examples? If I added a new link, from which I used information, should I count it as 1 point? If in the article, that I wrote I used 2 pictures from Wikimedia Commons, should I count it as 1 (0.5+0.5) point?--Rina.sl (talk) 12:44, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Regarding the images you are counting correctly. 2 images give you 0.5+0.5 = 1 point.
Regarding the source you get 1 point for each new source added that confirms the information in the article. The preferred way, on many Wikipedia language versions, is to use footnotes. A new link would give you a point, but please do not only add a plain link but also more information so that the information can be easily found (links often stop working after a while). You can read more about what information to include here. Sources are crucial for Wikipedia's verifiability and we want to encourage this type of work. I hope that answers your questions and thank you for contributing! John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:06, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for these answers. And one more question about this rule "+5 points if your article is one of the proposed ones from the organizing teams." If I choose a topic from this list Вікіпедія:WikiGap 2019/Пропоновані теми[1], will it be counting as +5 points ? Or which articles are proposed?--Rina.sl (talk) 16:31, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The articles listed on WikiGap Challenge/List are the ones that give you +5 points. Best, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 17:37, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

2 questions about scoring

edit

Greetings! I have 2 questions about scoring:

  • The event of wiki gap(Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon) in Arab World (in Egypt too) is online and will end on 31.03.2019, so can I add the contributions, that I make ?
  • The articles, which I make, is translated from German and English into Arabic, so how can I get points? and how will the organizers know that these articles is translated?--Omnia Alaa Ahmad (talk) 19:52, 17 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Another question about scoring: Can you explain me please this rule of scoring: "+1 point for each new source you add to an existing Wikidata object.". If I add label, description or alias, will I get 1 point? or should I add new information with source to get points? --Omnia Alaa Ahmad (talk) 03:34, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for not answering earlier. I missed your question.
If you add new information to Wikidata, with a source, you get a point. You also get a point to add a source to the information that already exists on Wikidata. Sources are awesome. John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 04:06, 6 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure of my participating

edit
Hi!
Thank you for joining. Here is an example on how you calculate your points. For example for ar: ندى أيمن إبراهيم it should be this point: 7 points for the 7,328 bytes, 5 points as it is a new translated article, 1 point for adding info to the Wikidata item = 13 points
