Spotted in the wild

edit

Personal experience: so far, when I happened to be shown the new interface, I couldn't make any sense out of it. I usually ended up picking randomly among the options provided, given I had no idea what the consequences would be, and then I went back to the normal edit process to resolve my edit conflict as usual. I suppose I might have decided to invest several minutes into the thing if my edit conflicts happened to be bigger and hence the potential return on learning a new system higher (but then, if I remember correctly, there was a pop-up covering the diff, so I had no idea how big the conflict was). --Nemo 21:19, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Defaults

edit

Thank you for the update, but I'm very surprised that the new view is expected to become the default. Default for all wikis at once? Was this discussed somewhere I missed? I for one have never managed to use the two-column edit conflict window with success despite trying a few times, so I'm not so sure it's more user-friendly, although it might be handy and faster for some power users who got used to it. @Nemo bis: Hi and thanks for your feedback. The plan is to make the feature the new default, because we can already see that the rate of successfully solved edit conflicts is higher with this new tool. But: We are planning to provide the option for opt-out so that everyone who so wishes can use the current default interface.
As for the deployment roadmap, we'll follow up with more information in a few week's time. But as always, we will deploy on a handful of wikis first (T244863), then on all other wikis a bit later.
Hope that helps, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 12:58, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Was the rate of successful edit conflict resolution measured separately for various classes of users and pages as well? I imagine it will be different for new and old users, users seeing this feature for the first time or not, users who voluntarily enrolled into it vs. those who just happened to receive it, articles vs. talk pages, etc. Nemo 13:01, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Talk page edit conflicts: adjusting order

edit

You can adjust the order of the conflicting comments.

This wasn't apparent to me at first glance. Perhaps there's another way to visually express this? Some kind of hint would be useful, e.g., if both comments had icons showing their mobility or a slight animation that shows the item can be dragged. @Czar: Thanks for your feedback. I will forward it to our developers. Max Klemm (WMDE) (talk) 09:02, 27 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Opt-out?

edit

I see phab:T245999 about adding an opt-out option, but there’s nothing about it here. I mentioned it in the next Tech News issue to avoid conservative folks (like me ;)) getting angry, but this should be documented on this page as well (e.g. Tech News is not the best place to tell exactly where to find the opt-out). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:52, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Tacsipacsi: Thanks for the advice. There will be an opt-out for the function and I will update this page accordingly. -For the TechWish Team: Max Klemm (WMDE) (talk) 11:56, 16 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Other namespaces

edit

Will the talk page feature work on de-facto talk pages in namespaces other than the designated talk spaces? For example, on pages such as Meta:Babel and en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)? --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 06:55, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Amire80:, I have to correct man answer: yes, the interface for talk pages is active in the talk page namespace and the "Wikipedia:..." namespace, since, as you mentioned, a lot of these pages are actually used like talk pages. So, it is active on Meta:Babel and en:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)! -- For the Technical Wishes Team: Max Klemm (WMDE) (talk) 10:21, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
