I'm using the same user name on both Wikipedia.org and da.Wikipedia.org - how do I merge the two?

I'm using the same username on two wikimedias wikier. Both accounts has been registered using the same e-mail address (I just checked and verified my e-mail on both en.wikipedia.org and da.wikipedia.org).

How do I get you to merge the user name (singular - it's the same on bot site) instead of giving me a NEW user name, into one account?

RipRapRob (talk) 23:19, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

They are already merged. You have a global account, so your account will not be renamed, see Special:CentralAuth/RipRapRob. Regards, --Stryn (talk) 23:35, 17 March 2015 (UTC)
I just got a bunch of emails about the account rename thingy. The question remains; how do I merge the accounts? Some are registered with the same email address, others with different email address. I bet I'm the only real person with my username (though, at least one of the accounts are connected to an old invalid email address and I don't remember my password). 2001:840:F000:4250:5E26:AFF:FE39:BD0A 05:04, 18 March 2015 (UTC) (Tobixen on other wikis)
Currently, only you can do that by submitting your password at en:Special:MergeAccount. Once stewards got the account merge tool, they can also merge two or more global account. For doing that, we do need a confirmation of all accounts to be merged. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:15, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
My problem is that the only password/email I've actually lost is the one for the English wikipedia ... which appears to be the "master" in this setup. How do I resolve this? 2001:840:F000:4250:5E26:AFF:FE39:BD0A 09:25, 19 March 2015 (UTC) (Tobixen)
If there's no email set and you forgot your password, it'll be almost impossible to recover your account. If you can provide other proof of identity, that might help though. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:49, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Possible to get a list of other wiki's with my username?

I use "mauirixxx" everywhere, though I'm curious what other Wikimedia wiki's I registered with - I honestly don't remember creating an account on either www OR meta - but my username & password is the same on both sites. Is there any way I can check or get a list of other wiki's I registered with that's owned by Wikimedia? Mauirixxx (talk) 20:43, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

See Special:CentralAuth/Mauirixxx. –Ejs-80 21:24, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

MediaWiki scripts that pre-date single user login

Both Template namespace initialisation script and MediaWiki default received rename notices on their English Wikipedia talk pages, but they should probably not be renamed. Part of the problem is that the user ID number associated with most of their edits in the Wikipedia database is 0, so they aren't counted in the regular edit count (and can't be viewed through the user contributions page either. Perhaps there should be a blacklist of such account names that shouldn't be renamed. Graham87 (talk) 08:18, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

And edits where the recorded user ID is 0 won't be renamed anyway. This would effect users from the UseModWiki era on the English Wikipedia (before 25 January 2002); see this API output for an example. Graham87 (talk) 08:46, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
Legoktm manually attached the unattached local accounts of several of these script accounts to their respective global account yesterday. (FuzzyBot, MediaWiki default, Babel AutoCreate, MediaWiki message delivery). I don't think we need to do this for accounts which were only used in the past. --Glaisher (talk) 11:17, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
I agree with Graham87, those accounts should not be renamed to avoid confusion, whatever the concrete effect. MediaWiki default was already merged, while Template namespace initialisation script was assigned to a vandal. Both accounts are actually fake, registered in 2006: https://tools.wmflabs.org/meta/stalktoy/Template%20namespace%20initialisation%20script The global account should probably be deleted and then both local and global accounts merged/usurped to an email address like noc@wikimedia.org, IMHO. --Nemo 11:26, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Confusing messages

Hi, I had an account on wikidata with a different name, but when I realized that all the accounts with the same names could be merged and that someone else had that name on a different wiki, I asked (I think in chat) for that account name to be changed to match this one and someone did it. That all worked great. But today I got an email about the old account name explaining the whole process of renaming ... but that account really should not exist. I think for me it doesn't matter, I can just ignore it, but it is a very confusing message for me and probably will be for others. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mcsmom (talk)

It would be easier to us if you can tell of which accounts you are talking about. At least your account Mcsmom will not be renamed. --Stryn (talk) 14:00, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Confused

Did you actually whether some of the people are actually the same person? For instance, I use "Junes" on nl, en, Commons and this site (though I only edit on en, and then only sporadically). But I only got the message on Commonms and nl. I'm thinking that maybe the "other" person is actually myself. And how am I going to tie al my accounts together? This is thorougly confusing. Junes (talk) 13:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Junes, you already have a global account so you can keep your current username. All of your accounts have been merged together. --Stryn (talk) 13:58, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Ah, great, thanks! I'm not the one editing on the Russian Wikipedia though. Junes (talk) 15:09, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Oh wait, I see they are 'not attached'. Junes (talk) 15:11, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Yep, they are not attached to your global account. Users like the one on Russian Wikipedia will be renamed in April and after this you can use your username on every WMF projects. --Stryn (talk) 15:13, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

User (talk) page redirects

I don't understand

I have a global account with multiple attached accounts and a large edit count. But for some reason I got a notice at Commons only that my account there would be renamed. Kelly (talk) 02:55, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

@Keegan (WMF): ping. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:38, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
@Kelly: The script made a mistake. It wanted to notify Kelly1 of the upcoming rename as the eswiki user got the global account: Special:CentralAuth/Kelly1. Unfortunately, the script was forwarded by the redirect to your talk page where it confused Kelly and Kelly1 by adding {{subst:PAGENAME}}. Don't worry about losing your commonswiki Kelly account. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 09:53, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Ah, many thanks! Kelly (talk) 13:50, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Bug?

SUL Info tool says "There are no unattached account with this username" for the account "André Koehne". However, the user was notified that his account will be renamed.

  • Will his account really be renamed? If so, what is the other account causing the conflict? or
  • Or maybe this was just an error in the script, e.g. because of the redirect from "User talk:Conhecer" to "User talk:André Koehne" (as above)? (notice that there are local accounts named "Conhecer"

Helder 13:36, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

The latter is correct. Same problem as above. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:14, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Do I need to worry? I got the notification on my wikiquote talk page but not on my wikipedia page. Are they the same account now? Or does the bot still want to rename the wikiquote identity? -- SpareSimian (talk) 22:28, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

@SpareSimian: Your global account is complete, none of your local accounts will be renamed. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:54, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

do not understand why name change

Hi, I have received that my account will be renamed. My account dates from the very start of Wikipedia & Co and is a SUL-account on allmost all wikis. A few like DE Wikipedia is user 'Walter' someone else. But since many years my account user:Walter has been my name on nearly all wikis, also on Meta en NL Wikipedia where I was one of the very first users registered. Can someone explain me what is going on please ? --Walter (talk) 09:01, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

I have requested to rename the accounts blocking my migration Steward_requests/Username_changes#Walter.40global --Walter (talk) 11:21, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
@Walter: As you are the global account owner, none of your accounts will be renamed. There's probably a bug with the script like in the section before. Where did you get that message so that I can examine the problem? Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 11:21, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the good news! I would not like it to lose my account name. I have received the message on my home-wiki; nl:Overleg_gebruiker:Walter#Uw_gebruikersnaam_wordt_gewijzigd , also here on Meta but strangely not on my talkpage but User talk:Wa1ter - so far I know I do not own that account. -> L = 1 . Other projects I am not aware of but it could be. Not on commons at least. --Walter (talk) 11:30, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
This redirect (which was followed to Walter's user talk page) seems to have caused the confusion. There are several similar cases on fiwiki; see the thread "Why a fiwiki bureaucrat with global account was delivered a message with rename warning?" that I started on the global renamers mailing list. –Ejs-80 11:40, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
I had the same question, glad to see it was some kind of mistake caused by a redirect. Paul B (talk) 12:59, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

But there all me!

I got a note on the Commons Wiki advising that a new name had been reserved for me to allow another account Softgrow to continue to edit on Commons. However I am the one and the same with me changing from Softgrow in 2008. Are you able to merge my old name in or resolve my confusion. I'm happy just being myself. Alex Sims (talk) 02:54, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

and on the ja wiki as well Alex Sims (talk) 02:58, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
The problem is that the notification bot follows redirects, and ja:利用者‐会話:Softgrow redirects to your talk page. Looking at ja:特別:アカウント統一管理/Softgrow, you will see that 'Softgrow' has SUL conflicts on Japanese Wikipedia and Commons and will be renamed. These notifications were incorrectly given to 'Alex Sims' instead. --Stefan2 (talk) 03:05, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

Efficacy of notifications in various languages

The edit count shows that the last notifications will soon be sent. It's interesting to compare visits from/to various languages. For instance es and it were notified around the same time; es has twice as many notified users and about 10 % of the total.

Of course an higher amount of visits might mean anything: an higher understanding of the message; lower understanding and need of further information; higher difficulty of the average case; more reachable users (e.g. more functioning email addresses); higher rate of language recognition and correct redirection by mw:ULS; ... Probably, however, translation had an impact; we should try to understand how it worked.

Some languages were also heavily customised, in particular German which mentioned "local" stewards. Not much effect so far [1] but the notifications are ongoing. --Nemo 11:17, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Also interesting:

MergeAccount got twice as many visits as GlobalRenameRequest, which probably means many users were able to find their answers there? Biggest wikis rather similar in number of visits, except fr.wiki (similar to de) and nl.wiki/ja.wiki (one third) which got very few. I notice that nl and ja had a bare link to the special page, without a link label; maybe that scares people who don't know what a special page link is? --Nemo 08:02, 23 March 2015 (UTC)

Keeping username

I just received notice that I would be forced to change usernames and would very much like to keep my username, or be the global account holder. When I tried to check at Special:CentralAuth/Monto, it appears a Japanese Wiki user might hold the global account, when I signed up for my account several years earlier (2006 vs the Japanese user's 2009).

Is there an arbitration process whereby I can reconcile my username without being forced to rename? Just located the Stewards page

Thank you
