Discussion in discussion (why not?)

edit

I have 2 questions: here is the first one:

  • shouldn't this discussion be actually moved in the talk page?.

I didn't do it myself because it looks like everybody agrees to discuss here, but it's strange! (I put my second question in the following section) -- G.Gonnell 23:35, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I agree!, done, plus, the tool is down. Discussion implying its function has been moved below. Further discussion might as well remain on the content page as was established. (though I also am not sure why...) Someone please properly archive the old stuff. hereen:♠ 07:46, 18 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why don't we see a proper error message? Brianjd 12:35, 2004 Dec 19 (UTC)

It's down because larousse's httpd was stopped. I don't know why this is the case. No, I'm not the only person who can control it, although I wrote most of it up till now. Any developer should be able to maintain it (although of course that doesn't mean they will). As for an error message:

The rcdumper often times out when watching the danish WP (http://kohl.wikimedia.org/cgi-bin/rcdumper?d=dawiki). At other times, it simply does nothing, ie. no output, not even the headers, and keeps on loading forever. At these times, the dump en eg. enwiki works fine. In both cases, no error messages are produced. -- /Wegge 23:41, 2005 Apr 17 (UTC)

After further time to think about it, it is obvious that the browser will time out after some period of inactivity. On a relatively quiet wiki as the danish, this is often the case. Sorry to have complained about an obvious issue. -- /Wegge 22:35, 2005 Apr 19 (UTC)

Not all edits are shown??

edit

5 Minutes ago, I edited de:Jesus von Nazareth. This change was not shown in the live recentchanges (see History, I am talking of the edit made on Nov 11, 04, 23:53 (UTC+1:00), and de:Bild:Live_recentch_30.11.04_2353.jpg, as you see, there is no such edit shown). --Rdb 23:07, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem where some edits are (randomly?) dropped. I haven't worked out what causes it yet, it may be something i'm misunderstanding in the database... —Kate | Talk 09:54, 2004 Dec 3 (UTC)

Bug: Special: links in edit comments are shown as red links.--Eloquence

Fixed for both Special: and Media: —Kate | Talk 03:42, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

They're edits! But, like, they're alive! ALIVE! What hath Kate wrought?! We can now actually organize anti-vandalism competitions! I can now actually veg out in front of the screen and don't even have to press F5 any more! Now all I need to do is apply for admin and I can revert ANYTHING with just a few clicks!

Ahem. But on a more serious note: nice work. Good tool for RC patrol. I'd like an option to automatically open links in new windows, though. (You can do that from the browser, of course, but a little Javascript to help it won't hurt). JRM 01:28, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yes, that would be useful. I'll see if I can do it today. —Kate | Talk 03:42, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

Doesn't highlight watched articles like static RC. Needs an option to pause the list, too. And have you already thought about what should happen once Wikipedia scales enough for the list to scroll by at ludicrous speed? Skip X edits? Skip X edits but always keep watchlist items? JRM 01:33, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Highlighting watched articles would require being logged in - if I can work out a way to integrate it with kate's tools (which supports logging in) then I'll look at doing that. Thinking about the rest... —Kate | Talk 03:42, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

Other known bugs:

  • automatic scrolling only works in Mozilla.

Great work.

  • Certain portion of traffic is occupied by recentchanges. 0.15% of En's, 0.5% of some large-scale wikipedias' (de, fr, ja), 0.7-0.8% of some others (ko, pl, sv). Is there a way to reduce the server load by using this tool somehow?
  • My machine froze once when I tried to select all text and copy. On a second try, it went well. But "save" option would be good.
  • The text keeps flowing, and I cannot stop the scroll bar in the middle to check several edits. This is particularly something I might want to do after checking few edits from RC, come back, and then start from where I left. "Pause" the reception would be an easy and useful option, I suppose. If I can receive the flow and stop the scrolling, that would be great.
  • Links to user contributions from RC flow would also be helpful.
There's now a "contribs" link for each user. —Kate | Talk 10:38, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

Tomos 04:48, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

This is the neatest new feature since section editing! One suggestion: an option to invert the order of diffs would be great so that I don't have to scroll for newly added diffs. --Daniel Mayer 06:22, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Kate, I love it. I ran it almost a hour, and it stopped. Other tools were running. Just for your information. If the live Recentchanges can provide us some Wikipedias' recentchanges as Tomos said on the above as an option, it would be helpful. (Show recentchanges of ar[], bg[] .... etc.) --Aphaia 06:55, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

There was a disabled scrollbar on the right and the bottom all the time and it did not scroll automatically. The links/key could not be accessed without scrolling back to the top. 210.50.104.102 07:49, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

What browser? —Kate | Talk 08:23, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)
I am that user but on dial-up, so my IP address changed - Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158. 211.26.96.194 04:19, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

A suggestion for both static and realtime RC: correct formatting of edit summaries (eg =bold). 210.50.104.102 07:52, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

After clicking "show bots", it stopped! 210.50.104.102 07:56, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Links to articles don't work if the article-name contains a question mark.

Should be fixed now. —Kate | Talk 00:32, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

I've run for a couple of hours. Then I stopped and reloaded to see Italian text messages, and worked great. The only thing that I missed, was [block] near the IP when showing non-logged user edits. Ciao, M/ 00:47, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

A really Great idea! However, it would be nice if it accepted characters such as åäöéà etc. Now, at least the swedish doesn't seem to accept them, and truncates page titles at the first occurrence of such a character. Also, when I tried a link (to en:wikt:crop) from the english wiktionary live RC, I noticed that it tried to open the page http://enwiktio.wiktionary.org/wiki/Crop

thx, \Mike 08:13, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Oh, one more thing. I copied the following part from the live RC a few minutes ago:

09:38:51 m 2 Pel (skillnad; historik) . . T (Diskussion | contribs) (terstlld till senaste redigering av Tggas) [if (showlogin == false) document.write() 09:39:10 Muslimska Br (skillnad; historik) . . Lamr (Diskussion | contribs) (stubbe)

It seems as a revertion of the article sv:Pelé (terstlld = återställd = reverted) caused the part "if (showlogin == false) document.write() 09:39:10 " to become a link to the "page" http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anv <br/> <script language= , as well as the line break between the two entries is broken. However, not every reversion breaks things:

09:27:44 m Pel (skillnad; historik) . . T (Diskussion | contribs) (terstlld till senaste redigering av 194.132.44.72)
09:28:03 m Wikipedia:Beg (skillnad; historik) . . Narym (Diskussion | contribs) (Castrups motivering)

Here everything worked out allright when reverting the same article... Neither does it seem to have anything to do with the number of revertions: I've seen first reverts break as well.

\Mike 09:54, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

(Note: The following was originally on Talk:Realtime recent changes, and is related to a complaint above. Brianjd 05:41, 2004 Dec 24 (UTC))

I found a little bug. When using the realtime RC for the English Wikibooks, I clicked a link, and got a link to a non-existing wiki. Specifically, I tried to go to b:en:Cookbook:Chicken Madras, and ended up at http://enwikib.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cookbook:Chicken_Madras . I also ended up at the non-wiki for the other links I tried. Scrolling

edit

It would be great to have a start/stop button for scrolling. Don't know if that's technically feasible, but it's difficult to click a link that is actually a moving target. Oh and BTW, this is a great idea, thanks. Kosebamse 08:33, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Mine stopped after about an hour. 210.50.104.102 09:01, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
It stops if the http server is restarted. Just reload it and it'll continue. —Kate | Talk 09:14, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

I can stop the scrolling using my browser (Firefox) by hitting escape, but when I restart it with Ctrl-R it starts with a blank page. Would it be possible to restart scrolling without losing the screen content (and perhaps even those edits that occured in between)? Kosebamse 09:33, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I'm pondering ways to pause/unpause it. The problem is, if you stop it, do you want the edits in between to show up all at once (which would be a bit hard to follow), or should they just be dropped? —Kate | Talk 09:39, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

Don't know what would be best. Given the amount of traffic on en: it might be best to discard them. However, if one wants to watch a particular article, article group, user, vandal etc. it would be fine to have the other option available (to make things some more complicated). Kosebamse 09:44, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Number of reverts

edit

Is the number of reverts counted from the diffs in the database, or by what other method? Kosebamse 09:47, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I added a new table, "hashs" (sic) that stores the md5sum of each saved version of a page. It looks for pages with the same title and md5sum as that edit. —Kate | Talk 10:18, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

To be clear about this; the number indicates the number of restorations of a particular version in the last 24 hours? --Walter 16:22, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yes, or in other words it indicates the number of old revisions of the article which are the same as the current version. —Kate | Talk 21:50, 2004 Nov 13 (UTC)

Page too wide

edit

In OmniWeb and Safari, the page is always too wide, no matter the width of the window. There is no right margin, but the right edge of the window goes right up to the recent changes text. — Chmod007 22:37, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Is this fixed now? I made the content narrower. —Kate | Talk 00:26, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)
Yes, now it looks the same in those browsers as in FireFox. — Chmod007 00:36, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
They don't automatically scroll to the end as new messages are added, though. — Chmod007 00:37, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC
The problem is that these browsers don't respect the "height: 85%" property/value for the content area. The content area grows without bounds as more is added to it. If one specifies a set height (say, "height: 400px"), the content area stays that height and starts scrolling as needed. I don't know if this is a violation of the CSS standard or who is to blame... — Chmod007 18:07, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Konqueror testing

edit

konq screenshot

On Konqueror 3.3.1 the scrolling actually begins above the top of the page. There is also an unused full-length scrollbar on the right with the scroll button always the full height. When the page grows longer than one browser page, the normal browser scrollbar appears in addition to this one and controls the actual scrolling. Silsor 04:34, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It's meant to start at the top - but it should also scroll automatically, which apparently it doesn't under non-Mozilla browsers.

Does anyone know how to fix this? It's currently done via:

<script language='javascript'>
  var v = document.getElementById('contentbit');
  v.scrollTop = v.scrollTop + 100;
</script>

(I know very little JS, so I have no clue why it doesn't work...) —Kate | Talk 04:40, 2004 Nov 14 (UTC)

What I meant was that it actually prints the first line above the page header, so it's hidden even when it's the only one. Silsor 05:08, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Yes, I see the same in OmniWeb (which is based on WebCore which is based on KHTML, same as Konqueror). The first line is outside (above) the bounds of contentbit. — Chmod007 00:54, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
This should be fixed now - it scrolls then output the next line, instead of the other way around. Still not sure about the other bug. —Kate | Talk 00:34, 2004 Nov 27 (UTC)
OK, that didn't quite work. Still looking at it... —Kate | Talk 00:35, 2004 Nov 27 (UTC)

Language?

edit

May I ask what environment the script is running in? Language? Connection to the database, does it poll? — Chmod007 18:24, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It's a CGI "script" written in C++, it polls the DB every 0.5 seconds. Right now it does it once for every connection, but at some point i'll probably daemonize it to be more efficient. —Kate | Talk 00:32, 2004 Nov 27 (UTC)

Culling of old entries

edit

Would it be possible to cull and remove old entries and limit the length of the page that way? Ideally, this would be a preference, so that I can set the page to include for example 200 lines, after which the oldest is automatically removed. I believe it is possible to use JavaScript to manipulate the DOM and remove "expired" objects. — Chmod007 19:45, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Time

edit

Now the time is in UTC. It whould be nice to use the local time. Walter 11:13, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Reverse order

edit

Very nice tool, my applauses :-)

Is there an argument for reverse order? (most recent changes in the top of the page). It would be great: it's easier to consult such page in reverse order.

Display of special characters

edit

The link to the article François Tanguy-Prigent appears as Fran, though the diff works properly. — Dan | talk 16:19, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw this for another article containing an ô. In the source, there were several very odd characters (non-displayable). I think there were three bytes for that single character. — Chmod007 21:52, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
This is probably a bug in the Latin 1 -> UTF-8 conversion. I'll have a look... —Kate | Talk 22:07, 2004 Nov 15 (UTC)
Actually it seems that all article and user names are truncated at first non-ASCII character --- Sten André (sv-wikipedia)

This should be fixed now, assuming it was only affecting en, sv, da and nl. If not, please let me know... —Kate | Talk 00:31, 2004 Nov 27 (UTC)

Almost fixed:) The case where it still doesn't work seems to be (on sv.wikipedia) when an edit is made to a page in the "användare" (user page) or "användardiskussion" (user talk) name spaces. Then the link is cut before the 'ä' and hence links to the empty page anv. However, if the non-ASCII occurs in the title rather than in the name of the namespace, it works quite ok. Also, the link to the editor works as expected.
Another matter: It would also be nice to have UTF-8 characters in the edit summaries:)

When I type something like reactants it should appear as reactants but on the Realtime Recent Changes page it appears as reactants (it actually exists but it won't work here because it's on Wikipedia). 210.50.25.143 09:48, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Missing "?" (perhaps US-Ascii)

edit

On ja, ja:利用者:編集しても良いですか? appeared as "編集しても良いですか?" on the live RC, but the link is changed to ja:利用者:編集しても良いですか (? is here omitted) and no page is availble. Perhaps similar phenomena would occur on articles whose lemma contain marks like ? or somewhat. --Aphaia 12:27, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Should be fixed now. —Kate | Talk 00:31, 2004 Nov 27 (UTC)

Some character on Page name Un-encoded

edit

I fixed a typo on en:F&C, live RC shows link of the page for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F&C . I think "&" should be encoded, and some other characters cause same probrem. --PiaCarrot 12:38, 2004 Nov 17 (UTC)

Also "!" occurs same probrem. ja:Piaキャロットへようこそ!! -> http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pia%E3%82%AD%E3%83%A3%E3%83%AD%E3%83%83%E3%83%88%E3%81%B8%E3%82%88%E3%81%86%E3%81%93%E3%81%9D!! --PiaCarrot 13:31, 2004 Nov 20 (UTC)
This should be fixed now. It will do correct URL-encoding of non-alphabetic characters. —Kate | Talk 00:03, 2004 Nov 27 (UTC)

Timeout

edit

It timeouts after 4-8 minutes on Opera (probably on other browsers too) if there are no changes. I would click on "generate keepalive every 1-2 minutes" link, if there would be one. Probably timeout could be prevented by sending at least one byte every minute, I haven't check the code for possibilities. --grin 11:25, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

New RC feature

edit

There is a new feature on Recent Changes (currently turned off) that doesn't show edits that have already been looked at. With your wonderful scrolling RC, you could simple give each person who comes a different wait buffer of a few seconds, that way not every person saw every recent change. --Alterego 07:04, 23 Dec 2004 (UTC)

List of anon proxies and scrolling RC

edit

Would it be possible with a little javascript to have somewhere a list of anonymous proxies, and if an anonymous edit is made from one of them their IP address gets highlighted? --Alterego 20:50, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Amount of bytes changed

edit

Is it possible to add the amount of bytes that have been changed in an edit to the ticker? It would be easier to detect large-scale vandalism (e.g. -10,000 bytes) with that information. --217.84.123.233 16:36, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

target="_blank"

edit

Please add it? to have it as an option is also ok. Now I have to press the middle button again and again to open it in a new tab. Thanks for the great work, --Jeroenvrp 19:19, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  • Is this option allready considered or going to be implented? --Jeroenvrp 12:15, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)

mysql error

edit

I get a mysql error all the time (today):

mysql query failed: select command denied to user: 'wikiuser@ilarousse' for table 'ns_name'

Same for me, today as well.  – Jrdioko (Talk) 00:29, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)
For me too --Telcontar 19:40, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No longer sql error today, but no results as well. :o( Thanks for looking into it, it's a really precious tool. --it:Utente:Paginazero 07:21, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Interesting, I'm still getting the same error.  – Jrdioko (Talk) 22:43, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Namespace choice ?

edit

It would be nice if there where a possibility to choice the namespace to show. I often only need the zero-namespace. --84.169.192.157 12:16, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

user css

edit

hi, applause for this feature, which I'd like to use, but it looks so ... not-wikipedia-like. How can I get it the look of my own user:name/monobook.css? --141.53.194.251 13:54, 14 Apr 2005 (UTC)
