Excluding Wikisource? edit

The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop neutral educational content under a free content license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.

The current language seems to exclude Wikisource, which hosts content that is more often literary than educational (such as "The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells) and often not neutral (such as "A Vindication of the Doctrine that the Sacrifice of the Mass is Idolatry" by John Knox). Adding "or literary works" would work, though awkwardly. Perhaps we could replace "neutral educational content under a free content license" with "free content", and leave the specifics to different policies like Neutral point of view. —{admin} Pathoschild 02:15:26, 26 April 2007 (UTC) The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.

In collaboration with a network of chapters, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission. The Foundation will make and keep useful information from its projects available on the Internet free of charge, in perpetuity.

"educational" is 'out of place' edit

being bold is: "The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect the sum of all human knowledge under a free content license and to disseminate globally." -Edbrown05 07:38, 25 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wording edit

Currently this page has the following language appearing right after the boxed blockquotation of the Wikimedia mission statement:

"The above is a replica of the original mission statement as is properly worded."

What does this mean? Especially the phrase "as is properly worded?" There is a grammatical mistake present in the sentence but I am not sure what the intent of the phrase "as is properly worded" may be, so I don't feel comfortable correcting the grammar.

Also, it is highly questionable whether calling it "a replica" is respectful of the proper meaning of English words. The connotations of the word "replica" go beyond the dictionary meaning ("an exact copy or model of something") to include the idea of a physical object.

The real test of whether this makes sense is to ask: how would the mission statement be "improperly worded"? Does the phrase "properly worded" make sense? The presence of the word "is" in the phrase complicates matters, since "is" would require a grammatical subject. What word or antecedent phrase in the sentence is being construed as the subject of "is" here? Mcbaldwin (talk)

Update of mission paraphrase in the Bylaws edit

The paraphrase of the mission in the Bylaws was updated by Board resolution in February, 2014. The change recognizes the expansion of the variety of recognized movement entities:

As of 2007: In coordination with a network of chapters and individual volunteers, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission.

As of 2014: In coordination with a network of individual volunteers and our independent movement organizations, including recognized Chapters, Thematic Organizations, User Groups, and Partners, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission.

We should consider a similar update to the mission statement. This doesn't legally have to be updated by a Board resolution; but has traditinoally involved community discussion. SJ + 17:27, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ambiguous edit

"The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally."

Does this mean

1. The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to empower and engage people around the world to disseminate it effectively and globally.

or

2. The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and also for the Wikimedia Foundation to disseminate it effectively and globally.

This distinction is important, and I would argue the natural reading is the first.

Wording needs to catch up with thorgs and UGs edit

"In collaboration with a network of chapters, ...".

Could it be changed to: "In collaboration with a network of affiliates, ..."? The link in this proposed wording is to the Affiliates portal.

I was thinking the same and I came here to point that out. --CristianCantoro (talk) 23:44, 15 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Text is out of date with revised mission as appears on wikimediafoundation.org edit

The Mission has been revised some time ago by the Board, to reflect the broader range of collaborators of the Foundation (from just "a network of chapters"), but this Meta page has not been updated. The text on wikimediafoundation.org reads:

The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally.
In coordination with a network of individual volunteers and our independent movement organizations, including recognized Chapters, Thematic Organizations, User Groups, and Partners, the Foundation provides the essential infrastructure and an organizational framework for the support and development of multilingual wiki projects and other endeavors which serve this mission. The Foundation will make and keep useful information from its projects available on the Internet free of charge, in perpetuity.

Unless someone can think of a good reason not to, I shall update the Mission page in a few days to match the actual current mission, as approved by the board. Asaf (WMF) (talk) 01:47, 27 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Protecting this page edit

It seems that the only edits to this page in the past years have been a combination of vandalism/tests and their reverts. Considering that the content of this page is supposed to be quite static and be changed only by editors knowing well what they are doing, wouldn't it make sense to have this page protected? It would save time watching and reverting. Qgil-WMF (talk) 11:28, 20 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Help edit

I have no idea what is going on with my home network and mobile devices. I have found that i appear to be suffering from some sort of malicious hack im clueless as to what to do. I have just changed broadband.provider and when attempting to browsw on chrome for advice on securing my google accounts etc i havr been directed to this page whih states my ip is blocked. Im using my mobile data and i have no clue about technology and dont understand the lingo i need step by step help or any advice please. It told me to email to unblock but i was redirected to this page. Kirstycrawford1 (talk) 13:06, 15 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Kirstycrawford1: Sorry for the very late response! In a nutshell, some IP addresses, like those used by schools, libraries, and organizations, can be shared by multiple people at the same time. Also, many internet service providers issue dynamic IP addresses that can be used by different people over time. This is very common with mobile connections. Because of this, many different people could have edited from the IP address you are currently using.
When people use dynamic or shared IP addresses to vandalize or disrupt our wikis, those IP addresses will often have to be blocked. The software that runs our wikis can't tell the difference between you and the person the block was intended for, so you end up caught in the block too.
Logging-in is usually the best way to resolve this problem.
I hope that helps! Quiddity (talk) 20:58, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Request for add" Bangla"in other official language Semi-protected edit request on 20 April 2024 edit

Hi, please accept my language.

WIKIPEDIA is a big knowledge source of the world. But there is few important language missing in it's official work. I want to request Wikipedia to add Bangla as their official language. Here are many people in Bangladesh and West Bengal. There mother language is Bangla. So, I hope that Wikipedia will add Bangla as their other official language. MD . Hi! There are no "official languages". The language links listed under Other languages lead to translations of the mission statement into those languages. বাংলা leads to Mission/bn but unfortunately only the title has been translated so far. Do you want to help translating the mission statement to Bangla? You can start doing so here. Count Count (talk) 07:02, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
