Donation to Wikimedia user groups / chapters

edit

I am so glad to see this program!

Currently the program is imagined as a way to get computers to individuals but in the future I hope someone uses this or something similar as a way to get some computers to chapters or user groups. If a group brings a laptop to events, then almost always it will be used by someone who shows up without one and who would not have participated otherwise.

I live in New York and at our events we always tell people to bring laptops and someone always comes without them. Right now, some people bring extra laptops, or sometimes we rent a few from the venue. That has been a lot to organize, but it also impresses the hosts that we make concessions to do this.

If there were any small user group regularly hosting events who would get a laptop in a program like this and start bringing it to events, it would totally be worth it. The major cost of recruiting a Wikimedia editor should not be the cost of providing them a laptop, which should be relatively low when other more complicated and expensive things like a meetup, a wiki community, and a program are in place. User groups may apply as well. The application form has a specific field for that. Asaf (WMF) (talk) 16:34, 17 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Not showing my request

edit

Dear all, I requested for a laptop. But the page is not showing my request. Can anyone help on this regard? Meghmollar2017 (talk) 19:49, 31 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Meghmollar2017, I see your request under Draft requests. If you want to publish it, find {{Hardware donation program/draft}} in your application wikicode and change word "draft" to "open". --Papuass (talk) 11:35, 2 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Papuass. Thanks. It worked. :) --Meghmollar2017 (talk) 16:56, 4 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

question

edit

Hello! Is this program still active? გიო ოქრო 09:57, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

It still exists, but is effectively paused due to the pandemic. The program depends on staff travel from San Francisco to in-person international events for delivering the laptops. Since no such travel is happening, no laptops are being delivered. Once the Foundation decides to renew staff travel to international events, the program will resume.
