A committee member provided the following comment:

Not a separate language. It would be appropriate to include Hong Kong-specific slang in Cantonese Wiktionary, in our view. For LangCom: StevenJ81 (talk) 15:12, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Settings
Project name 維基詞典 "Wiktionary" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wiktionary talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads yes Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Hong Kong slang is different from normal Chinese slang because of its mixed culture. There should be a reference of Hong Kong slang in Wiktionary. And the population of Hong Kong is over 7 million.

  • Oppose. Chinese already has a Wiktionary. Having 7 million people in Hong Kong is not a legitimate reason for opening a Wiktionary project for Chinese in Hong Kong. The other regional variations of Chinese, such as Chinese in Mainland China and Chinese in Taiwan, do not have their own separate Wiktionaries. Also, the language code zh is already taken for the Chinese Wiktionary, so it cannot be used for "Chinese Hong Kong." In addition, Hong Kong slang is probably in Cantonese; another request has already been made for the Cantonese Wiktionary. Justinrleung (talk) 07:50, 13 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • 反对：若是要建立粵語（廣府話）之詞典，請問打算以何種語言釋義呢？粵-粵，還是粵-普？或者粵-英？——我的意思是，只有第一种情况，才有必要建立zh-yue.wiktionary.org；第二种情况应当归入zh.wikt；第三种则显然是en.wikt——为什么我要这么比较呢？很简单，因为发展难。你看看现在zh.wikt发展的那个样子，我觉得都可以弃坑了。维基词典这个架构，似乎不适合做普通的词典用；至少中文的情况是严重缺少内容（应该是人手太少的缘故）。相比之下，很多词反而在en.wikt解释得非常好，单字的字形信息也很完整（作为一个中国人，我自己都会去en.wikt查询）；说句不好听的，现在zh.wikt就是个存放（更详细）字形的地方；我相信粤语用字也早已被收录了。“外面”有很多商业或非商业的在线词典可供使用，我觉得没必要让维基专门开一个“鸡肋”站点，食之无味，弃之可惜。

If the goal is to establish a Cantonese dictionary, in what language should it use for interpretation? should the dict be Cant-Cant, Cant-Mand, or Cant-Eng (Cant=yue)? --- What I mean is, only in the 1st case will zh-yue.wiktionary.org worth creating; the 2nd should belong to zh.wikt; and the 3rd obviously en.wikt --- Why I make such comparison? the answer is simplye: establishing a new site is too difficullt. Just look at zh.wikt now, a desolate forsaken place that I feel not worthwhile of maintaining anymore. The structure of wiktionary is not quite the same as a typical dictionary (whether online or paper), at least in zh.wikt there's so much content lacking (probably because of lacking of people). In contrast, many words are well-explained in en.wikt, and the "glyph" infos of single characters are fully provided (as a Chinese I myself go to en.wikt for lexicological infos); to tell an ugly truth, zh.wikt now is nothing but a repository for more detailed info of glyphs etc; and I believe those special characters for Cantonese are already included for a long time. There're many commercial/non-commercial online dictionaries available "out there", I think it's not very meaningful to ask Wiki (Wikimedia) to open a "chicken-limb" site, pity to throw yet dull to taste. -- SzMithrandir (talk) 20:30, 24 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: I don't think slang words itself warrant creation of an additional Wiktionary project. They can be put into either or both Cantonese Wiktionary (could be created if fulfill relevant criteria) and Mandarin Wiktionary. C933103 (talk) 05:40, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
