Requests for new languages/Wikisource Javanese

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Language code jv (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Javanese Language name in English
Language name Basa Jawa Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q33549 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Project name Wikisumber "Wikisource" in your language
Project namespace Wikisumber usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Parembugan Wikisumber "Wikisource talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads admin Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikisource-logo-jv.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone UTC (Etc/GMT) "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces Indhèks (Index), Kaca (Page), Panganggit (Author), for talk pages: Parembugan_<translated_namespace> For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Slogan: kapustakan mardika Anything else that should be set
submit Phabricator task. It will include everything automatically, except additional namespaces/settings. After creating the task, add a link to the comment.

Discussion edit

Arguments in favour edit

  1. Support The Javanese language has been written since 804 AD and there are literally thousands of works written in this language spanning 12 centuries. For example, at the Leiden University Library alone there are more than 18.000 codices from Indonesia[1], a great majority of them written in the various forms of the Javanese language. So it would be no more than obvious if there would be a Wikisource in this language. At the multilingual Wikisource we have already done some work. Some have worked on the Bible, others on the Koran and still some others on Hindu and Buddhist texts. So we already have a variety of texts. Meursault2004 16:07, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Support Same like Meursault2004 Azmi1995 10:13, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Support It's a important languague. Mikhailov Kusserow (talk) 06:32, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Support Agree. Abundant Javanese historical sources and literature (to include those at Leiden University), could be perished sooner or later if not being made public, maintained properly and immediately.Pras 23:07, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Support Agree, there are not so many reliable resouces in the Internet for Javanese language. --Anggoro 04:22, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  6. Support I support this. Pelita 10:11, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Support Good idea. It will be useful. TracySurya 14:41, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  8. Support Javanese language has a rich literal work, from Negarakertagama to Sastra Gending Mimihitam 09:08, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  9. Support Bennylin 09:11, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  10. Support per above--Andrijko Z. 20:51, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  11. Support It's been a while not seen any wikisource from Indonesia. This will bring many more sources to the wikipedia. Joseagush (talk) 07:28, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  12. Support Seeing that Javanese language has many literature that is in public domain, the creation of Javanese Wikisource will make it easier for people accessing these contents, in plaintext specifically. I'm in favor for this request. Labdajiwa (talk) 11:15, 7 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments against edit

General discussion edit

In future, actually I also would like to see pages in Javanese script. At this moment it is not yet possible although Unicode already reserved space for Javanese (and the related Balinese) script. Javanese texts are also commonly written with Balinese and Arabic script. Meursault2004 14:33, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

old comment, has become irrelevant
Currently I'm creating a Narayam "keyboard" to type Javanese text, and it's available as of now in Meta, Incubator, and Translatewiki. Example: ꦨꦱꦗꦮ which I type without 3rd party software. (if you can't read it, see jv:Pitulung:Aksara Jawa) Bennylin 14:25, 18 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Settings edit

Hello! With the approval of this project now being considered, I invite all community members to discuss about the settings for the new wiki, which should be entered into the table at the top of this page ("Settings", collapsible section). --MF-W 15:43, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bennylin, Wirjadisastra, Thersetya2021, EnsiklopediaBebas, Labdajiwa, and Rima H (WMID): ^^ --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:31, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226: Already update the settings. Wirjadisastra (talk) 06:34, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the logo (identical with the Indonesian). Bennylin 23:45, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the slogan (kapustakan mardika/the free library) to the additional settings. The title for the main page will be "Wikisumber, kapustakan mardika" (Wikisource, the free library). Labdajiwa (talk) 09:45, 17 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Per off-wiki discussion, I've changed the time zone from Asia/Jakarta (UTC+7) to UTC. jvwiki and jvwikt use UTC. Users can change it to their prefered time zone via preferences. Labdajiwa (talk) 04:30, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Upload and EDP edit

Changing enable_upload to "admin". We have many books in en:User_talk:Crisco_1492/Library#Javanese_literature ready to be uploaded to . Bennylin 09:58, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have already agreed on an exemption doctrine policy? It is necessary for uploads to be allowed. --MF-W 11:13, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MF-Warburg: oldwikisource:Talk:Main_Page/Basa_Jawa#Enable_local_upload_for_admins. Thanks! Bennylin 07:33, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's not an exemption doctrine policy though. Such a policy needs to define which non-free content may be uploaded locally that would be disallowed on Commons. Local uploads can only be enabled with that purpose. See Non-free content. --MF-W 10:44, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't get what you meant because of incorrect redirect when I searched "exemption doctrine policy" Special:Permalink/13363071. Bennylin 11:32, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
English Wikisource seems like doesn't have the EDP. Should we based it on Indonesian Wikipedia then?
Edit: it seems do have some kind of policy not listed in my previous link nor wikidata. Our community is still considering which would be our base policy, idwp, jvwp, or enws. Bennylin 11:49, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
In what form would you like the 'agreement' come in? Another vote? Could I just make the EDP page and we, the contributors agreed elsewhere off-wiki? Bennylin 12:11, 25 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Like with all community decisions, there is no harm in preparing a text somewhere else, but it should be documented on-wiki that the contributors agree. --MF-W 10:07, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Wirjadisastra: So as replied here, the EDP should be written as a formal "project:xxx" page. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 06:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bennylin and Wirjadisastra: do you need the upload at all? Some Wikisources only upload the files on Wikidata Commons and don't upload them locally and many Wikisources only have a very small number of local files, see the last column "Files" on Wikisource#List of Wikisources (the English is an exception and not the rule). Cheers, VIGNERON * discut. 19:52, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we have discussed it, and there are some files with incompatible Commons licenses (for example CC-BY-NC and others) that we would like to upload locally (just as the case with Bennylin 08:32, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a bunch. The wiki is waiting for creation now. --MF-W 14:25, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks MF-W, you don't know how much this mean to us (and me personally)!!! Bennylin 16:03, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
