This language has been verified as eligible. The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert. If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval. |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal
Algerian Arabic, or Darja, is the native language of the majority of the 35 million Algerians, more than 80% of them speak it as their native language, while the remaining 20% speak it as their second language after Berber, it is therefore essential that the Algerians get a wikipedia in their own native language to have an easier access to knowledge and feel that their language is valued and recognised as such.
Algerian Arabic largely differs from formal Arabic, and the difference is certainly as big as between Italian and French, most of its words are of arabic origin but they are changed to a big extent and the berber influence makes half the vowels in the original arabic pronounciation disappear, it has also many new words and many words that are of Berber, Turkish or French origin. However, the difficult History of Algeria (a History of colonisation) did not permit the establishment of an Algerian state that would have institutionalized the Algerian language like it was the case with the European latin languages and their emancipation from formal latin.
Most Algerians can speak and understand formal Arabic, because it is the language used in the media, at school, at work..etc.. but their spoken language remains the Algerian Darja, and those who did not study and learn Arabic or French cannot get easy access to knowledge and information, and our goal here is to grant a direct access to knowledge in their own language to Algerians who do not master, nor know much, of Arabic, French or other languages.
Merged from other pages: Darija is spoken by over 40.000.000 moroccan. Darija language is one of the popular language in morocco, algeria, tunisia and lybia languages. Darija language is an exceptional descendant of Arabic that has no diglossic relationship with Standard Arabic or Classical Arabic. Darija is also unique among Semitic languages since its morphology has been deeply influenced by berber languages and Romance languages, namely Frensh and spanish. A good team is available to contribute in the project.
Algerian Daridja, also known as الدارجة الدزيرية, is a significant and widely spoken language in Algeria, with approximately 50 million speakers. It represents the unique cultural and linguistic identity of millions of Algerians. Currently, there is no dedicated Wikipedia project in Algerian Daridja, which limits the availability of online educational resources in this language. A Wikipedia in Algerian Daridja would help in preserving and promoting the language, providing access to knowledge in a native language for Algerian speakers, and contributing to the diversity of content available on Wikipedia.
Furthermore, Algerian Daridja is used in daily communication, media, and various forms of expression, making it an ideal candidate for a Wikipedia edition. Creating this project will align with Wikipedia’s mission to ensure that everyone can share in the sum of all knowledge, regardless of the language they speak.
Support for this project can be seen in the growing number of digital resources, social media content, and academic interest in Algerian Daridja. Establishing a Wikipedia in Algerian Daridja would provide a formal platform for this language to flourish in the digital space.
I strongly believe that the creation of a Wikipedia in Algerian Daridja will be beneficial not only to native speakers but also to scholars, linguists, and anyone interested in the language and culture of Algeria.

- Algerian is somehow silimar to Maltese (that is a mix of arabic and latin languages), Algerian is a mix between Arabic (main component), Berber, and latin languages (mainly French) , and Maltese has its own wikipedia even though it is spoken by only half a million people.--Ikjan 14:25, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
- The fact that Algerian Arabic is not used in algerian schools, newspapers or official documents isn't a valid argument, this is only related to the internal policies of Algeria, the fact is that this language is the everyday's language for the majority of Algerians and this is the most important. And about the comment that says "and there is no real motivation among Algerians to write it and make it the official language of the country" , I don't know who wrote this and by which right he speaks on behalf of all Algerians ! This is the opinion of someone and certainly not the opinion of the Algerian people as a whole. Of course there are Algerians who do not want or need an Algerian wikipedia, because they can understand other languages or because they just despise their own language and call it a "vulgar dialect", but we are here for those Algerians who do consider their language a language and want or need a wikipedia in it. --Ikjan 22:08, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- Support Support: Native speakers of Algerian Arabic are willing to contribute to this project in the long-term, hence this project has the potential to flourish like the other North African language Wikipedia editions such as Egyptian Arabic, Kabyle, Tarifit and Moroccan etc. Therefore the Algerian Arabic language ought to be given the opportunity and priviledge to have its own language edition of Wikipedia. Portions of the Bible have also been translated into Algerian Arabic [1]. --Jose77 22:35, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

- Support Algeria is the bigest country of Africa and we are 40 millions speaker of this language, all algerian speak it. Linguist have confirme that is a language. Our language have to been accepted by Wikipedia because we have a VERY BIG problem of transmission of Knowledge, only the upper class speak arabic or french or english, but the majority of people speak algerian arabic, thisi is the only language thaht they really understand and it's the only way for them to kcnowledge, it's not the goal of Wikipedia? Transmission of knowledge? Algerian are blocked in obscurity because their mother tongue is not recognise for political problem and ideological supremacy. I'm very sad when I see west people don't help us, we don't have other solution to transmit knowledge, we don't have political freedom to change our destiny, we dont have free speak, we just have internet to evolve, it's our only weapon. Let us do it, and you will see. Pelase? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kellybundy (talk) 25 November 2018
- Support The Maltese, Egyptian, and Moroccan Wikipedia are successful (based on different metrics). The Algerian one will be too. A455bcd9 (talk) 21:51, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
- Support. Just like Moroccan Darija, Algerian Darja has some limited publications, and would probably have way more if it has institutional support. Regardless, it's the mother tongue of 35 million+ of Algerians. There are Wikipedias for dead languages, and languages with way fewer speakers. Only thing I'm worried about is the name of the language which is written دارجة (Darja), which could get confused with Moroccan Darija, particularly in interwiki sections. I think it should either be دزيرية as in the native label, or we probably should change the interwiki name of Moroccan Darija to the less conservative spelling داريجة (and probably both).--Ideophagous (talk) 23:15, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
- Support Algerian Darija is one of the most spoken languages of the Muslim world, and it has a good amount of articles. However the article creation and editing must be constant throughout the year and not only during the spring workshops in the Algerian university (if I remember correctly). Algerian Darija is the native language of the most Algerians and it is used everywhere except education, government and media. Also the success of Moroccan Darija with more than 50 active users (and a growing readership in Algeria having more than ten thousand pageviews as the language is very similar), are another factors who confirm the good potential and the success of the Algerian Arabic Wikipedia once approved. And if there are already two Wikipedias in Arabic dialects/languages and Wikipedias in Hindi languages, obviously Darija worths its chance.NikosLikomitros (talk) 01:36, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Arguments against
- Cite from enwiki: In Algeria, Algerian Arabic or Darija isn't used in schools, television or newspapers, which usually use Arabic or French, but is more likely heard in music like Raï if not just heard in Algerian homes and on the street , and there is no real motivation among Algerians to write it and make of it the official language of the country. That says it all. --Thogo (talk) 15:38, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- There's already a request for Darija Wikipedia. Although Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian dialects (Darija) are a little different in pronunciation they are very similiar to each other, creating a wiki for each north african state makes nonsense and will only distract efforts in the future. --Xiquet 20:54, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- @Xiquet: The fact that each of those dialects has its own ISO code but the broader "Maghrebi Arabic" does not (although it does have its own Glottolog: nort3191)may influence Langcom into approving those three dialects as separate Wikipedias. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:57, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- Despite their similarities, they are still separate groups of dialects, and each have their own sub-dialects on a national level. Mutual intelligibility between Moroccan and Tunisian dialects, and even with Algerian is also not always guaranteed. As a contributor on the Moroccan Arabic Wikipedia, I would certainly not accept Algerians or Tunisians to come and write in their own dialects in our Wikipedia, and I wouldn't write in theirs in my own dialect. We have enough on our plate trying to harmonize the spelling, vocabulary and even a few divergent grammar rules, between sub-dialects within Morocco. Adding Algeria and Tunisia to the mix would be a complete nightmare. So in short, the projects should remain separate.-- Ideophagous (talk) 23:06, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
- Is there an established literary tradition for this dialect? I doubt it. Without an independent literary tradition, it will end up as another "Arabic Wikipedia", but for Algerian users. Alefbe 21:30, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Same as thrd comment. Robin Hood 1212 13:36, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- It is more useful to contribute to Arabic wikipedia; no dialect of Arabic has ever been in official use, use on TV is limited to informal or semi-formal discussions and entertainment, writing in an Arabic dialect is as unacceptable as writing in 'jordie' - despite the larger gap between formal and informal arabic - which means most residents of any Arab country are unaccustomed to informal Arabic - as well as these dialects lacking academic terms. Creating wikipedias for every Arabic dialect will not in my opinion seriously affect arabic wikipedia, but they would end up like the egyptian arabic wikipedia and only be edited by those with a clear anti-arabic or ultra-nationalist agenda, hence be read only for humour to see how skillfully the writers can avoid using common arabic words. One could consider seriously a proposal for a wikipedia in darija, the maghreb being a real cultural and linguistic region, but creating wikipedias for every arab country can never result in a serious knowledge bank, rather give a platform for nationalist extremists and distract from improving the Arabic wikipedia which is of much greater benefit and would be taken more seriously if presented to a university for example. I am still appalled as an egyptian that egyptian wikipedia is allowed to exist as a toy for some rich kids (and yes, one can tell because there are variations within a country's dialects, raising the new question of whether we'll have a wikipedia for every region of every country) , and many others feel the same. A more useful discussion would be how to simplify Arabic wikipedia's style.Moemin05 15:39, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- Strongly Against Creating Wikipedias for every Arabic dialect will not result in any positive development. One must keep in mind that most technical terminology is similar across the Arabic dialects as the terminology is effectively part of the Standard Arabic lexicon. The proposal will only result in duplicate work for Wikipedia contributors who will merely copy text from the ar.wiki to the Algerian one (as with the case of arz.wiki) and change minor grammatical and orthographical details and a few non-technical vocabulary to suit the label "Algerian". Agari 17:26, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Very Strongly Against All Algerian users should just use the Standard Arabic wiki. It's like saying a request for Australian English, or Mexican Spanish or African American Vernacular English or the Shanghai dialect of Wu Chinese. Creole languages are separate since they develop on their own, but dialects, no.
- Very Strongly Against I fully agree with the previous comment. There is no such language as Algerian, and furthermore there is no literature or written texts in this dialect. It's strictly part of the Maghreb dialect that also includes Morocco, Libya, Tunisia and Mauritania. Atubeileh 02:35, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

- 1. Any Arabic Slang Language is not a formal human language, it is slang ! having a Wikipedia in a slang Arabic, will lead for many problems, the main leading one : more Arab-speaking wikipedians will be starting more wikipedias in other slang dialects, therefore we shall have someday in the future more than 30 Wikipedia's in Slang dialects ! each Arab speaker would want to start a Wikipedia of his own dialect ! and we should keep in mind, that not only regional states have their own dialects, the cities within those countries and states have more specific slang's and dialects, and this will make the true value of Wikipedia drop down when it will be filled with slang's !
2. how valid is a Slang Dialect : lets not forget it is a dialect : meaning there is total biding code to how to spell and write or read ! a dialect differs from a man to another ! for example in slang English : the word The : is turned into da and de ! as also it is a slang : a slang doesnt have a biding grammar or what so ever ! it is just what goes with the mouth ! a slang is saying what you feel your mouth can easily say ! this is how a slang develops ! and another thing is that in slang we might have sounds that do not exist in the formal language : for example in many slang arabic's we have the sound /g/ and there is no specific way to express this sound ! sometimes they use the Farsi letters sometimes else, here are four letters that all represent /g/ in slang arabic's :چ ڠ گ ڇ, and there are many more !
3. today we have a Wikipedia in a slang non-grammatical nor organized language, so why cant we have a Wikipedia in lolcat language, it already translated the bible : teh lolcat spek iz organizd !
4. if you accept to have a wikipedia in a slang language of a regional state, this means you now need to have a Wikipedia to each state in the US at least, having Wikipedia Masri, is a huge deal of turning Wikipedia into politically divided than nations and cultures contributing together, DO NOT TURN WIKIPEDIA INTO A POLITICAL DIVISION !
5. in All Arab & Algerian Universities, (and rest of the world), a scientific report - scientific page, in a slang dialect, even their own slang, is not acceptable and that report/page will never be regarded as true or even scientific unless in a formal Language like Formal Arabic Language !
6. having Wikipedia in this slang language or any other will lower the validity and the standards of Wikipedia : how would something valid/true/scientific and reliable as Wikipedia have a SLANG language, there is not scientific family in the world that would recognize a slang as a valid way to express science and studying !
7.when we have this Wikipedia & many others, that is already leading to more Wikipedias in other Arabic SLANG Dialects, the Arab-speaking Developers and editors will be divided in more than 30 Wikipedia in stead of all of them developing the one true formal language Arabic Wikipedia, thus they are destroying and corrupting in stead of uniting and building wikipedia, and expanding Wikipedia Arabic
8. treating Slang Arabic as equal for other formal Languages is a discrimination against the other slang-speakers of the world, thus for example we must also have Slang Arabic English, it is as the same level as Egyptian Arabic Slang, or Algerian or Bahrani Arabic
9. HAVING A WIKIPEDIA IN A SLANG IS STUPIDITY !
10. IT IS NOT A LANGUAGE , WIKIPEDIA IS GETTING FILLED WITH SLANG ARABICS, AND ARABS HAVE MANY SLANGS, THUS ARABIC SLANG WIKIPEDIA WILL NEVER END
and so I've presented my statement, with Logic and reasoning ! please respect and don not vandalize ! as I stress on you understanding #1 & #2 !
Ahmad Masalha !

- Totally against! In addition to what has already been stated in the previous comments, you can’t create an Algerian Wikipedia because there exists no such “language”! I mean, each city has its own unique dialect. You cannot say that there exist 40 million speakers: You need to count the inhabitants of each Wilaya separately. It would be inconsistent, illegible, and totally nonsense to write an article in Algiers’ vernacular, another in Annaba’s, then use that of Oran, etc... In addition, “Algerian Arabic” is only capable of communicating simple ideas and lacks many words and meanings, that’s why people code-switch to French (or Standard Arabic, for that matter) to express them. Let’s focus on the French and Arabic Wikipedias instead. --إلياس الجزائري (talk) 08:23, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

- Oppose In Algeria, the predominant languages studied, used for writing, searching, and studying are French, English, and Arabic. Over the course of several decades, there have been only a few contributors in these versions of Wikipedia. Considering the existence of various non-standardized dialects spoken in different regions, it is challenging to envision a comprehensive encyclopedia based on a particular dialect. Morocco attempted a similar experiment, which ultimately resulted in significant failure. Therefore, I strongly disagree. Riad Salih (talk) 17:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

- This is a response I am leaving years too late, but I'd like to explain why Algerian was proposed separately. The ISO gives separate codes to the Darjia dialects: Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, and Libyan so each would have its own Wikipedia. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:09, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- I have some of the same concerns that I did with respect to Egyptian Arabic and Moroccan Arabic, etc. -- these languages are easily eligible on purely linguistic grounds (i.e. number of speakers, distinctness from other language varieties), but if there's no standardized orthography clearly distinct from the orthography of Classical Arabic, then the usefulness of a Wikipedia for them would be greatly impaired. This is because attempting to write dialectical Arabic with the standard Classical Arabic script, largely using standard Classical Arabic orthographical conventions, will always be a half-baked solution with many drawbacks and unsatisfactory results (negatives which are simply unresolvable within the Classical Arabic orthography system itself). In short, many of the distinctive features of each Arabic dialect will not be able to be written clearly and unambiguously, and it will look like an illiterate unsuccessful failing attempt to write Classical Arabic in the eyes of Classical Arabic purists. I strongly doubt whether an Arabic colloquial wikipedia will really be successful until and unless it adopts some kind of colloquial-specific orthography which is clearly distinct from Classical Arabic orthographic conventions. For an example of such a proposal for one Arabic dialect, see Nizar Habash's "Palestinian Arabic Spelling Standardization Project"... AnonMoos 13:36, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

- Propose of a Maghrebi wikipedia with a written source -- I will support a Maghrebi Arabic/"Darija", north africa (Morocco-Algeria-Tunisia) dialects -they all called darija- are very similiar to each other they are only different in accent, I don't support creating a wiki for each land since it's illogical to claim the dialect recognize national borders and you will find a different accent even among the one land, however they started teaching it in en:Ceuta and en:Melillia as a "new" language.[5][6] I will argue with many other sources if needed cheers. --Xiquet 22:30, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's years too late for this response, but the ISO individually defines the Darjia dialects as different and so we would have different Wikipedias for them. However the boundaries of the dialects do not exactly match the country boundaries. Libyan Arabic is spoken in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:19, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
Localisation update
- Currently there is no effort underway to localise the nmost wanted messages at translatewiki.net. This is a requirement before a creation of a new Wikipedia is considered. Please ask at translatewiki.net for support for your language. Thanks, GerardM 09:26, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Northwest African Arabic
Please, take a look at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Northwest African Arabic and discuss there about the possibility to create Northwest African Arabic (Maghrebi) Wikipedia. --Millosh 23:14, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
- This was closed on the basis that the individual Darija dialects were to have their own Wikipedias instead of a common Darija Wikipedia WhisperToMe (talk) 18:58, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
