Requests for new languages/Wikidata Cape Verdean Creole
submitted | verification | final decision |
|
This proposal has been approved. The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project. |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | kea (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Cape Verdean Creole | Language name in English |
Language name | Kabuverdianu | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q35963 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | no indication | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | kea.wikidata.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | Wikidata | "Wikidata" in your language |
Project namespace | usually the same as the project name | |
Project talk namespace | "Wikidata talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) | |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). | |
Default project timezone | Africa/Praia | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above. |
Proposal
editI would like to be able to add labels and descriptions to Wikidata in Cape Verdean Creole (I'm a native speaker), and currently if I try it, Wikidata gives me an error saying the language code 'kea' is not recognized. --Waldir (talk) 17:43, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- This proposal seems to be misplaced. It is not a request for a new project. PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:49, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- I know, I was puzzled myself, but GerardM told me this was the way to do it (i.e. to request support for a new language in Wikidata). --Waldir (talk) 17:59, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Since he's on LangCom, I guess he's right about this, but it is a strange place to request it. According to this blog post, any language with an ISO 639-3 code is permitted; I do not see the need for a Meta request. PiRSquared17 (talk) 18:20, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

In principle any language with an ISO-639-3 code is eligible however, it still requires the language to be considered eligible. A language will not be enabled only because someone has an interest in it. The objective is to prevent the "wealth" of new languages that made Wikipedia look like a stamp collection. - @Waldir: U can just translate its Main Page to d:Wikidata:Main Page/kea, then translate the Wikibase to translate interface of Wikidata. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 00:22, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
- The request is about making it possible to add kea content to Wikidata items (or however the Qxxx pages are called), not about translating the interface. --MF-W 00:38, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
- Any advances on this? Pinging GerardM, Liuxinyu970226 and MF-Warburg. --Waldir (talk) 14:40, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- If the proposal is misplaced here, then where is the right place? Many months ago I tried to ask for Northern Thai to be added for Wikidata at Talk:Language committee [1], but it was completely ignored there as well. Ahoerstemeier (talk) 14:19, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Waldir, GerardM, Liuxinyu970226, and Ahoerstemeier: Please open a task at Phabricator. This is the place to request a new language project.--GZWDer (talk) 17:34, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
- @GZWDer: I created a task here, please check if it was done properly. --Waldir (talk) 12:24, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
- Update: this has now been fixed. At last! :) Thanks Thiemo! --Waldir (talk) 23:28, 12 July 2016 (UTC)
