Requests for comment/Change the logo of the Wikinews project

The following request for comments is closed. no consensus for change

Hello everyone, I would like to propose a new logo for the Wikinews project. In my opinion, the current logo is too detailed, with meridians and parallels added to the continents. Moreover, the logo is difficult to see and read for people with visual impairments. So I decided to thicken the lines, use a single color for the symbol and remove the continents, to make it easier to read. What do you think?

  • Comment Comment: Since proposer didn't notify any editions beside en.wn and fr.wn, I've taken the liberty of notifying all the apparently active ones. Heavy Water (talk) 06:44, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    @Heavy Water Thanks a lot ;-) Regards, manȷıro💬 09:14, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Heavy Water Just corrected your notice on BS...it had faulty link...consider checking others. Zblace (talk) 07:42, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Damn. I thought I'd fixed those. I've gone through and found the same thing happened on zh, fi, and eo. Thanks, Zblace. Heavy Water (talk) 17:13, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak support I do like cleaner logos, but I also prefer using the WMF blue/green/red. —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:09, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak support same as the above + I like Wiki&news being in different colors/shades. Zblace (talk) 07:39, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose: I don't mean offense to Manjiro5; please view my comments as an attempt at blunt but constructive criticism. Ever heard of if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Well in this case I think it's more "if it ain't broke, don't break it". It's not just the logo ain't broke, it's got a complexity and interestingness the proposed one lacks, and it's been ingrained in (at least, en.wn) for most of project history as its distinctive stamp of quality. I know very little about accessibility, but it doesn't seem to me anyone needs to be able to distinguish all the intricate lines of continental borders and such. I'd ask, can a person with some degree of visual impairment recognize the logo and understand what it depicts. As callous as this may sound, it appears stupid to me for us to take all the vitality out of our logo just so everyone can see every intricate detail in it — do they even care, or are they moving on to reading our articles? I now see another English Wikinewsie said much the same thing in response to your proposing this at our water cooler. Oh and it's Wikinews, not WikiNews. @Heavy Water Hello, thank you for your constructive comment. Indeed, I completely agree with you on the fact that the current logo is still good. But I think why not modify it, which would bring a little newness and freshness to Wikinews. Have a nice day. Regards, manȷıro💬 09:18, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral NeutralI understand the assumptions and agree with the diagnosis: the current logo is indeed very complicated, with too many details and overcomplicated colors. But this proposal is misguided. I don't understand what it represents. Now we have the world and the signal it sends. Instead, we get a fake Toyota logo. • Weak oppose. I am not a fan of the current logo, but the proposed logo is not better. --NGC 54 (talkcontribs) 13:17, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral Neutral Doesn't look too bad and I have to admit the old logo has gotten a little outdated. However, I'd say that the saying "It's not broken, don't fix it" mentioned above applies to Wikipedia and its sister projects rather often. I believe this is may be a good TLDR description of my opinion. --V0lkanic (talk) 14:14, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral Neutral in the end. I support this new logo because it does not contain transparency. Transparency has a negative effect on representativeness. I am opposed to this logo because the representation of the world seen from the North Pole seems to me to be a good representation of the diffusion of human knowledge. Cordially. ―Eihel (talk) 06:22, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Comment @Manjiro5: thank you for your suggestion and proactivity. I like the idea of a more essential logo. Considering lines and shapes, in my opinion the new version could be improved changing the thickness of the lines: actually, the thickness of lines of the globe is unbalanced relative to the thickness of lines of the brackets enclosing it. I'm in doubt considering colors: perhaps it would be possible to take this opportunity to fix the colors using the Design Visual Guide, as suggested above by Koavf? --Patafisik (talk) 06:42, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral Neutral I'm not attached to the current logo, but I don't think it has much meaning in the Japanese version of Wikinews, which is run by only one person. However, it would be offensive to me to object because of the circumstances surrounding the Japanese version of Wikinews, so I will remain neutral.--Keiji Inagakitalk11:23, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Comment I like the older logo with the map on it. The new logo doesn't look custom.--MSClaudiu (talk) 13:41, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral Neutral Have you notified all the projects?
Oppose Oppose Without local support, this is something nonsense. Lemonaka (talk) 17:52, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lemonaka Hello, I took charge of warning the French and English versions and @Heavy Water took charge of notifying the other most important projects, but if you think that other projects must be notified, do not hesitate to do so ;-) Regards, manȷıro💬 10:30, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Most of the logos of our project were not based on flat design. The request would create inconsistencies between projects' design language, so we should consider it thoroughly. —— Eric LiuTalk 16:35, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Oppose This seems a typical example of If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I see no actual improvement at all in this newly proposed logo, which might even look more tedious to some. (On the other hand, what Wikinews really needs is more active editors, at least on most of the language versions.) De Wikischim (talk) 17:42, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose Per the English Wikinews discussion on this proposal, nearly everyone seemed to dislike it strongly. Especially since this is purely a matter of preference, why shouldn't the people who edit on a site have any say in what it looks like? JPxG (talk) 05:21, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Comment Thats how usually any nEws-Feed works. You do not have a say in how it looks. Adtonko (talk) 17:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Oppose Agreed with User:Pppery, User:De Wikischim, and others. The current logo has more colour, more detail, and more representation, so don't see the need to change it. ArticCynda (talk) 20:39, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose. There is a current tendency to oversimplify logos and it's awful. It was quite hurtful when Pringles' logo was changed, so with Burger King's, so with Discord's, so with Animal Planet's, so with YouTube's, so with Firefox's, etc. Let's not join it.--SRuizR ¡Pure life! 03:08, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
