International logo contest/Vote instructions

historical pages 2003 Wikipedia international logo contest (vote instructions)
This was an international contest held from July 20 to August 27 2003, gathering 150 proposals. After the early proposal by Chuck Smith on October 12, 2002, the contest was first proposed on June 14, 2003 by Erik Moeller, who argued that the logo (adopted in January 2002 from the Logo suggestions) was unaesthetic, not international, and portrayed a text-only Wikipedia.

Voting closed on September 25, 2003 at 20:00 UTC. See International logo contest/Results for the contest results, and see International logo contest/Ratification for an opportunity to vote for or against adopting the new logo for your Wikipedia.

After everyone has had an opportunity to submit a logo to our international logo contest, voting will take place on which logo is to be used. Individual Wikipedias will get an opportunity to hold their own votes on whether they will use the "official" logo. It will be possible to vote for keeping the existing logo.

Voting will take place in three stages:

  1. In the first stage, every user can sign their name above a maximum of 10 submissions which they think should be part of the final voting round.
  2. After the first stage, there will be a ten day period (see #Voting deadlines) within which the finalist can be refined for the final voting round.
  3. In the final stage, the 10 submissions with the highest number of votes, with up to 4 variants of each logo chosen by the original submitter, will be voted on using average voting (as decided here). It will be possible to grade each variant on a scale from 1 (very bad) to 5 (very good). The original logo will also be an option, but will be voted on as a single set (if this set wins, the logos will not be changed).

Please look at the finalists and then add your votes on International logo contest/Ballot. Note that you have to vote on individual logo variants, not on entire submissions (with the exception of voting on "submission 0", keeping the old logo). See the ballot page for detailed instructions.

The third, final stage ends today, September 25, 20:00 UTC. Voting is closed edit

Voting rules for final stage edit

ONLY VOTES MADE BY USERS WITH AN EXISTING USER PAGE ON META THAT POINTS TO A USER PAGE ON ONE OF THE WIKIPEDIAS WILL BE COUNTED. FURTHERMORE, USERS MUST HAVE MADE AT LEAST 10 WIKIPEDIA EDITS (CONTRIBUTIONS) TO BE COUNTED. (ALL LOGO CONTRIBUTORS ARE ALLOWED TO VOTE, REGARDLESS OF THEIR NUMBER OF EDITS.)

Starting on September 15, 20:00 UTC, you can grade each variant listed on International logo contest/Finalists from 1 (very bad) to 5 (very good). You can grade as many variants as you want. The logo with the highest average score wins. If there is a tie, the logo with the higher number of votes wins (e.g. 4.75/80 votes beats 4.75/40 votes).

Be sure to create a user page here before voting, and to link or redirect to an existing Wikipedia user page. You can redirect it to your user page on one of the existing Wikipedias using the syntax

#REDIRECT en:User:MyName
#REDIRECT fr:Utilisateur:MonNom

However, see Redirected user pages considered harmful first and consider simply linking to your main user page (i.e. "See [[en:User:MyName]]").

You don't have to be logged in to vote, though it is very much encouraged.

Voting deadlines edit

The deadline for the first voting stage was September 5, 20:00 UTC. Finalists will be given the opportunity to optimize their submissions until September 15, 20:00 UTC. On September 15, the final voting round will begin. The proposed deadline for the final voting stage is September 25, 20:00 UTC.

Voting rules for first stage edit

The first stage, which used approval voting with a limit of 10 votes, was more relaxed in terms of counting votes. All votes signed with a username were counted. The voting method used for the first stage was approval voting with a limit of 10 votes per user.

For the sake of the first voting stage, variants did not exist. Any vote was for the entire submission. In the second voting stage, you will have an opportunity to grade each logo variant individually.

edit

When voting, there are a few things that you should think about:

  • Is it possible to display this logo in three dimensions?
  • Is the logo still readable at extreme diminution (smallness)?
  • Does the logo display optically well at extreme magnification?
  • Is it possible to draw the logo in black and white?
  • Does the logo make good use of color?
  • Will the logo be noticed at impulse? Is there an eye-catch?
  • Does the used type face fit?
  • Is the logo discernible from a distance?
  • Is the logo discernible when up close?
  • Is this logo memorable?

Voting for yourself edit

It is acceptable to vote for your own submission like you would vote for any other.
