Hausa Wikimedians User Group/2030 Strategy planning research 2023/Final report/Summary of Findings

Overview Introduction Design, Data Collection and Analysis Literature Review Methodology Findings Summary Appendix

Summary of findings

The main findings of the study suggest that the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors in terms of leadership and skills development within Hausa Wikimedia communities are diverse and can be carter for. Volunteers are motivated by various factors such as their interest in a particular topic, desire to contribute to a public good, and need to gain reputation within the Wikimedia community. However, they also face challenges such as navigating the complex social dynamics of the community, language barriers, and lack of formal training and education programs.

Based on these findings, it is recommended that Hausa Wikimedia communities develop more structured training and mentorship programs to support volunteers' skills and leadership development. The community can also benefit from more decentralized leadership structures that allow for greater participation and decision-making by volunteers. Recognition of volunteer contributions through badges, awards, or other forms of public recognition can also incentivize continued participation and foster a sense of community among volunteers. In addition, policy makers and the Wikimedia Foundation can support the Hausa Wikimedia communities by providing funding for community-led projects and initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges and barriers to skills and leadership development. Furthermore, the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Resources team can provide more comprehensive training and support to volunteers. It is important to note that this study has some limitations. The sample size is relatively small and may not be representative of the entire Hausa Wikimedia community. Future research could use a larger sample size and a more diverse group of participants to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors.

The findings of this study have important implications for practice and policy in the Hausa Wikimedia communities. By addressing the challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development, Hausa Wikimedia communities can create a more inclusive and diverse platform for knowledge creation and dissemination.
