Research Design and Purpose

The research design used for this study is online survey research. The purpose of the study is to establish a methodology that maps assets and needs and generates aggregated data for deploying leadership and skills development initiatives based on real needs. Additionally, the study aims to establish a service that facilitates connecting/matching peers across the movement for teaching and learning skills, encouraging a diversity of methods, including training, mentoring, consulting, online learning, peer-to-peer support, and events. Finally, the study aims to increase the number and diversity of contributors on Wikimedia projects and create/improve Wikimedia content in Hausa, Fulfulde, and Kanuri languages, and raise awareness of the mission and work of HaWUG.

Data Collection and Analysis Method

The data collection method used for this study is online survey research. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the predictors for research question one, descriptive analysis for research question two, and multiple regression analysis for research question three. This qualitative report aims to explore the challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development within Hausa Wikimedia communities and determine the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors. The report will also explore how Wikimedia communities can match peers, facilitate teaching and learning, and recognize volunteer contributions. Through the use of online survey research, the report aims to provide data-driven insights that can be used to deploy leadership and skills development initiatives that meet the real needs of HaWUG and the Wikimedia movement as a whole.
