Hausa Wikimedians User Group/2030 Strategy planning research 2023/Final report/Research Methodology

Overview Introduction Design, Data Collection and Analysis Literature Review Methodology Findings Summary Appendix

This qualitative study aimed to explore the challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development within Hausa Wikimedia communities, identify the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors in terms of leadership and skills development, and determine how Wikimedia communities can match peers, facilitate teaching and learning, and recognize volunteer contributions. The data collection method used for this study was online survey research. This report describes the data collection and analysis methods used, the sample and sampling technique, data collection instruments, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations. Sample and Sampling Technique The sample for this study consisted of volunteer contributors to Hausa Wikimedia communities (103 respondents). The sampling technique used was simple random sampling, where participants were randomly selected from the population of volunteer contributors who were registered and active on Hausa Wikimedia platforms.

Data Collection Instruments The data for this study was collected using an online survey questionnaire, which consisted of closed-ended questions. The questionnaire was designed to gather information about the challenges and barriers to skills and leadership development, the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors, and how Wikimedia communities can match peers, facilitate teaching and learning, and recognize volunteer contributions. The questionnaire was administered using an online survey platform, and participants were given time to complete the survey. Data Analysis Techniques The data collected from the online survey was analyzed using multiple linear regression and descriptive statistics. Multiple linear regression was used to predict the challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development within Hausa Wikimedia communities and how Wikimedia communities can match peers, facilitate teaching and learning, and recognize volunteer contributions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors in terms of leadership and skills development, using descriptive analysis will enable us to summarize and describe the characteristics of the variables related to the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors in terms of leadership and skills development, as well as the diversity and representation of the volunteer contributors. The multiple regression analysis will enable the researcher to identify the relationships between the independent variables (level of engagement, technical and language skills, and priorities and preferences) and the dependent variable (challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development) for research question one and the dependent variable (the extent to which volunteer contributors are familiar with Wikimedia projects and the extent to which they use these projects) for research question two . Hence the researcher will be able to identify which independent variables which have a significant impact on the dependent variables and to what extent.

Ethical Considerations In conducting this study, ethical considerations were taken into account. The study adhered to ethical guidelines, including informed consent, confidentiality, and data protection. Participants were provided with information about the study and gave informed consent before participating. All data collected was kept confidential and anonymous. Participants were also informed that they had the right to withdraw from the study at any time.

Conversely this study used online survey research to collect data from volunteer contributors to Hausa Wikimedia communities. The data collected was analyzed using multiple linear regression and descriptive statistics. The study adhered to ethical guidelines, including informed consent, confidentiality, and data protection. The findings of this study provide insight into the challenges and barriers to skills and leadership development within Hausa Wikimedia communities, the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors in terms of leadership and skills development, and how Wikimedia communities can match peers, facilitate teaching and learning, and recognize volunteer contributions.
