The Hausa Wikimedians User Group (HaWUG) is a recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation, with a mission to support, grow, and promote Wikimedia projects in Hausa language and related topics. As part of the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030, HaWUG is working on a strategic plan to implement initiatives related to cluster C, which aims to invest in skills and leadership development. The purpose of this qualitative research is to identify challenges and barriers hindering skills and leadership development within Hausa Wikimedia communities, determine the needs and priorities of volunteer contributors in terms of leadership and skills development, and explore how Wikimedia communities can match peers, facilitate teaching and learning, and recognize volunteer contributions. Background Information on Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 The Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 is a movement-wide strategic plan that outlines a set of ambitious objectives drafted by the Wikimedia community to guide and grow the reach and impact of the Wikimedia movement into the future. The goal is to become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares the vision can join. As part of the Wikimedia movement, HaWUG is committed to contributing to the achievement of this goal. HaWUG was launched in August 2019 with a mission to promote Wikimedia projects in Hausa language and topics related to its people, culture, society, history, and beyond. Today, the group of dedicated and passionate Wikimedians hail from Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, and other countries worldwide. Members dedicate their free time to writing, translating, and improving content in Hausa language wikimedia projects and organizing community outreaches, editathons, meetups to support and grow the movement among Hausa-speaking communities worldwide.
