Hello Gamaliel thank you for submitting an application for a rapid grant. I see in our records that you currently have an Annual Plan Grant that is open with a report due on July 15, 2018. You can see in our eligibility guidelines that organizations with current APG are not eligible for a rapid grant. I will move your proposal to draft and you can move it back to proposed in our new fiscal year, which starts on July 1,2018, once you've completed your reporting requirements for APG. Thank you for submitting this request. WikipediaSpace is a really interesting experiment in methods of engaging people with Wikimedia projects, and we are happy to fund banners for further outreach. It sounds like you are taking a very thoughtful approach to the banners. It’s great that you will collaboratively brainstorm and consult with others about design before going to print. I’m glad to hear that you are taking this stage so seriously. We also appreciate that you will release the banner design on Commons.

Before we finalize funding, I have some quick clarifying questions:

  • Can you clarify why new banners are needed? For example, did the old ones wear out? Is there a greater demand for them than the existing banners can serve?
  • Your requested amount seems very reasonable, but can you still provide a breakdown of costs to show how you came up with this number? For example, how many banners will be printed at what cost per banner?

@AWang (WMF): Apologies for the late reply, we're all very busy in DC with preparations for next weekend's Wiki Leadership Bootcamp. I'll try to get my colleagues with more skill with numbers to address the cost issues following the Bootcamp. I made the current estimate based on the cost of the previous banners, a guess at how much those costs would go up during development, and any side costs that would crop up. WikipediaSpace was developed with a $ 35,000.00 grant from the Knight Foundation, and while 2.0 won't cost nearly that much, I wanted to be properly prepared.
The current banners are still in use. There are three sets: one on permanent display at the Innovation Hub at the National Archives, one which is used for all of Wikimedia DC's events in the area, and one which is shipped around the US to various user groups, chapters, and volunteers for their temporary use, with shipping costs paid for by WMDC. Both of the latter sets are heavily used and always in demand. This project initially came out of a desire for more sets of banners to meet that demand. However, I thought that instead of merely meeting the current demand, we could use the opportunity to develop new banners to accompany new kinds of events, such as a Commons banner geared towards photo walks or a medical banner geared towards our science events and outreach.
