Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Srkrm/ArtFeminismSqueakyWheel
Hi Srkrm. Thank you for this very high-quality proposal (seriously one of the most well-thought out proposals I've seen) and all your efforts to organize the editathons. It's great that you're doing multiple events as we've seen this model to be more effective at engaging new editors than one-off events. Your line-up of speakers is impressive and we're appreciative that you've thought about changing the location of the events to support more diverse participation. Unfortunately we only fund equipment for Wikimedia affiliates who have a longer-term plan for use and sharing with the Wikimedia community. We can support you to rent a camera for the three events and realize this may be more expensive than purchasing one. Please let us know what you'd like to do. Once we've confirmed that, we can move forward with approval. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 17:44, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Alex! Thank you for your kind words! Your comments regarding cameras is totally understandable; we are excited at the prospect of deepening our relationship with Wikimedia through these events. However, I removed the equipment purchase from our budget (after consulting with our technical director, we will be using our regular cameras towards recording the sessions, and will figure live streaming through cellphones or ipads). I have replaced that line item with a different one towards project management fees for Caitlin Coder (user:caitcoder) as she has been doing a tremendous amount of work doing outreach and organization towards both last years event, and this years. It was through her extensive efforts that our upcoming Edit-a-thon was just (yesterday!) featured in WIVB, our local television station and CBS affiliate. Let me know how this sounds to you, thank you! Srkrm 18:07, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
Unused Funds Request
editSqueaky Wheel would like to thank the Wikimedia Foundation for its award of $1940 to support a series of Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon events in Buffalo. It has been tremendously rewarding to host three Wikipedia Edit-a-thons that have generated articles, new editors, and some new ideas for how we, as an organization, hope to move forward in our involvement with Wikipedia.
Due to the support of additional sponsors covering cash and in-kind costs of the edit-a-thon series, we currently have $575.26 in unused funds. We would like to submit a request to use these funds to support an additional edit-a-thon: Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Gender + The Non-Binary, to take place on Saturday, March 16, 2019, 2–7pm.
1. Budget
Item | Amount (USD) |
---|---|
Guest Speaker Zeesy Powers | $150 |
Coffee & Snacks | $150 |
Guest Speaker Travel Fees` | $100 |
Childcare | $100 |
Posters advertising Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon | $50 |
Misc. paper goods | $20 |
Total | $570 |
2. This event would be an iteration of Squeaky Wheel’s Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thons; the sixth one we’ve held since March 2016, and the fourth one coinciding with Art+Feminism’s global activities. Crucially, as Art+Feminism enters its sixth year of worldwide activities, they have announced an evolution of their project: Gender+ The Non-Binary focuses on breaking apart “the myth that people are only as valuable as their adherence to gendered stereotypes - only as honorable as their ability to fit into one of two categories: assigned girl at birth or assigned boy.” We are happy to follow Art+Feminisms lead on this year’s focus. This will be a day of learning how to edit Wikipedia, bringing to light histories unknown while impacting the world’s dictionary. Research materials, snacks and coffee will be provided. Onsite childcare will be available by request for those who RSVP by March 1st.
3. The start date would be January 15th, 2019 when all promotion should begin being distributed.
The event will take place on March 16, 2019, 2–7pm at Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center.
The end date of the project would be April 15th, 2019, at which point all payments will have been finalized and a report can be made.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you!
- Hi Srkrm. Thanks for this exciting update and your interest/efforts to hold another editathon with the remaining funds. This reallocation and extension is approved. Your final report will now be due May 15, 2019. Cheers, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 23:04, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
