Project Goal
editChoose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.
- Recruit new editors, particularly women and LGBTQ+ individuals within the Western New York community.
- Increase skills for existing editors, through in-person events and through live video of our sessions for our followers who cannot be there in person.
- Add or improve content on women (especially women of color) and LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as issues relevant to these identities, with a focus on media arts.
- Live-stream and broadcast Wikipedia training sessions and talks via social media and through Squeaky Wheel’s public access television show ArtGrease (broadcast in Buffalo, NY and Philadelphia, PA) for participants unable to be physically present at the Edit-a-Thon.
- Collect multimodal data in the form of qualitative video interviews with participants after the event to assess the event's efficacy for engagement, Wikipedia literacy, and critical thinking.
Project Plan
editActivities
editTell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:
1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?
- Funding for this proposal would support three Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon events through 2018 presented by Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center, in collaboration with Peach Mag in Buffalo, NY. The events are scheduled in Spring, Summer, and Fall. Each event will feature guest speakers who will share their expertise on women artists from Western New York. Proposed speakers include Heather Gring (archivist, Burchfield Penney Art Center) who will speak about artists associated with ArtPark at our Summer 2018 Edit-a-thon; and Sandra Williams Bush (former librarian, Frank E. Merriweather Library) who will speak about the resources and history of black women artists in Western New York through the William Miles African American Collection at the Frank E. Merriweather Library. Funding for this proposal would also support project management fees for Caitlin Coder (user:caitcoder) towards outreach and organization of the events. The training sessions and guest lectures will be streamed on social media, and broadcast on Squeaky Wheel’s public access TV show ArtGrease in Buffalo, NY and Philadelphia, PA. The Spring and Summer events will be held at Squeaky Wheel, while the Fall edition will be hosted at the Frank E. Merriweather Library located on Buffalo’s East Side; this is especially important for participants unable to attend in person due to disabilities, the segregated nature of the city of Buffalo. In 2017, Squeaky Wheel hosted the first Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Buffalo.
2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.
- Each event will be advertised to the Western New York community through the following methods: (1) Registering events on the Wikipedia Outreach Dashboard (2) Targeted emails to previous participants, heads of relevant academic departments of higher education institutions in the city, previously identified individuals with specific interests in digital literacy and gender issues, and past edit-a-thon participants (2) Advertisements on Squeaky Wheel and partners news bulletins, social media (Facebook event link), websites (event site on squeaky.org), and on printed posters and calendars (3) Press releases to regional news outlets such as The Public (4) Word of mouth (5) Sessions and guest speakers are broadcast on social media, and recorded for our public access television show ArtGrease. (6) The Fall 2018 edition will take place the Frank E. Merriweather Library to reach underserved participants.
3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?
- Zeesy Powers(User:Seazzy) is our primary lead Wikipedia editor and instructor. She facilitated a a Wikimedia workshop for Squeaky Wheel at our 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. Powers is an interdisciplinary artist. She teaches programs for digital illustration, animation and video through community groups, and facilitates workshops on contributing to Wikipedia as part of the Art+Feminism edit-a-thons. She lives in Toronto, and will be travelling to Buffalo to be our guest speaker and lead moderator for the Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon on March 3. Ekrem Serdar (user:Srkrm), Maiko Tanaka (user:Mjtbird), and Caitlin Coder (user:caitcoder) will be trained by Zeesy Powers and assist new and intermediate Wikipedians in their learning.
4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?
- Squeaky Wheel will provide participants access to our media lab, which is equipped with 12 computers with WiFi for editing in case they do not have their own laptops. All participants will be provided access to a Dropbox folder containing links to Wiki Education training modules. Instructors and experienced Wikipedians will be available throughout each event to assist and instruct participants,. Specialized content resources and reference materials will also be provided; for example, at our March 3rd Edit-a-Thon, curators from the Albright Knox Art Gallery will provide catalogues, books and other research material for anyone wishing to focus on artists in their current exhibition We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-85.
5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?
- We will conduct video interviews with willing participants during and after the event to get feedback on the participants experience. Each interview will address a standard set of questions regarding the value of wikipedia, the value of Art+Feminism, and the knowledge and experience gained by the participant during the event. We will thank participants on their Talk pages after the event, encourage them to continue editing, and invite them to become lead and assistant editors for future editions. Each event will be live-streamed on our social media outlets (Squeaky Wheel is the 3rd most popular arts organization on social media in our region) and broadcast on our public access television show ArtGrease to both extend the reach of our program, and advertise upcoming Art+Feminism events. Participants will also be encouraged to sign up to an email list to get updates on the outcomes of past sessions and information on upcoming sessions.
6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Endorsements
editCommunity members are encouraged to endorse your project request here!
- on behalf of A+F we support this proposal. Squeaky Wheel hosted a successful event last year and we are happy to see them expand into a multi-event plan. Theredproject (talk) 20:33, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
- having participated in last year's event, I can confirm that is a highly diverse and engaged group of people who attend. There is strong interest in not only continuing the edit-a-thons, but in working to further articles developed through this art+fem edit-a-thon. Seazzy (talk) 20:42, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
- As the event coordinator for Squeaky Wheel's 2017 & 2018 Edit-a-thons, I have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, many of whom had no prior experience editing Wikipedia! I fully support this project, as more regular training sessions will allow for us to build a local contribution to the Art+Feminism movement. Caitcoder (talk) 18:35, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
