Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Medhavigandhi/The Heritage Lab Art And Feminism 2017 Editathon

Latest comment: 6 years ago by WJifar (WMF) in topic Approval of remaining funds

Dear Medhavigandhi,

Thank you for your patience and diligence in putting together this proposal! We're happy to see that this initiative's focus on women has enabled you to partner with institutions that could support and provide additional resources to your project. Before we make a decision on your proposal, we have a few questions:

  • Could you please list the other museums that have agreed to host these events, and share any additional links from village pumps or event pages that indicate active interest in each location? It would also be helpful in the future to direct them to this proposal for endorsements or support.
  • Can you elaborate whether local experienced editors will be at these editathons? If so, can you identify them or tell us if you have reached out to them? We would like to know if there is capacity to follow-up with attendees in each city so that new editors continue to be engaged and seek advice about their editing experience.
  • Will each event offer a training session for new editors? We have seen in the past that teaching the basics and creating new accounts take time away from practicing newly-learned skills on-line. 45-50 new or improved articles may be an ambitious goal to achieve depending on how long each session will be, but we would like to hear your thoughts on how this could be possible.

If you have not already done so, we hope you will contribute to the Art+Feminism dashboard to help keep track of the edits and editors from this project!

Looking forward to your response! Cheers, Morgan Jue (WMF) (talk) 18:45, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello MJue (WMF),

Thank you for your support always. Please find below, my response to all the questions stated by you.

  • Participating Museums include : a. Government Museum & Art Gallery (Chandigarh) b. National Museum (New Delhi) c. Piramal Art Museum (Mumbai) d. Bharat Kala Bhavan (Varanasi )

Facebook Event Page for Chandigarh: https://www.facebook.com/events/214980078984188/ : We have 27 confirmed registrations so far, collected through a form on https://www.theheritagelab.in/af-wikipedia-india/ About sharing additional links for the other Museums : National Museum is keeping this event internal as they are also responsible for the National Museum Institute. The Editathon would be extended to students of the institute as well. We therefore do not have a Facebook event page for them. It is unlikely that one would be created, though registrations for the event will be compulsory through the above mentioned link. Piramal Art Museum's event is scheduled for April 29, hence we have decided to launch their Facebook Event page and Registration Forms on 10th April only. The Bharat Kala Bhavan event is on 18th May and while this event would be open to public, it would be compulsory for the students of the University (which the Museum is associated with) as well. Since there is time for the event, we will open registrations later for this as well.

  • On local experienced editors: For the Chandigarh Edit-a-thon we got in touch with the Punjabi Wikimedians group, but were informed that they are based in Patiala and New Delhi. Therefore, we will be using training videos and lesson plans sent to us by the Art + Feminism team. We are following up with Punjabi Wikimedians' team on an experienced editor for the Delhi event. For Mumbai and Varanasi, we are yet to reach out to the Wikipedia India group.

As indicated, we would be creating "Hangout" groups on Facebook to keep in touch with the new editors (participants) and keep them engaged in building content. We have also decided to create an Art+Feminism India 2017 page on Wikipedia at the end of the 4 series with links to all participants' user pages and articles they have contributed to.

  • Each event would include 2 training sessions, and we are estimating that with the kind of content that is available to us (not yet on Wikipedia), each event could look at creating / editing at least 10 new articles. We would be working full days on the event day, and participants would be working in teams.
  • The Art+Feminism dashboard has been created for Chandigarh only at the moment, and as and when we host new ones, we will be creating new dashboards to keep track.

Hope this helps! I am happy to clarify anything that you may have doubts over.

Looking forward,

Request approved edit

Thank you for the swift responses, Medhavigandhi! We're happy to support this project in the full amount of US$1386.70, as per AWang (WMF)'s approval. I'll be in touch over email shortly to go over next steps and instructions. Best wishes on your event this weekend, and we look forward to the rest of your work from this series! Request for Extension edit

Dear MJue (WMF)

The Wikipedia Editathons I hosted were a wonderful experience for me and for the participants too! However, the last event was scheduled for May 18 and because of a change in the University-Museum's governance it first got postponed by a week, and then cancelled as the exams were right around the corner. I request if you can please grant me an extension so I can host the last editathon too!

Look forward to your response!

Hi there, Medhavigandhi! Please propose a new end date you would plan to have this done by in your response, and I will approve here. Note that your report would be due 30 days after this date, so please allow yourself enough time! Best, Morgan Jue (WMF) (talk) 23:55, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hello, @Medhavigandhi:. Could you provide us an update on this grant? As it stands, the original project dates have not been updated as we waited for your reply, and so the report and documentation of expenses for this report were due on 29 June 2017, or 30 days after the project end date. Could you contact us at rapidgrants wikimedia.org? Thank you. Best, Morgan Jue (WMF) (talk) 20:54, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

-- Dear MJue (WMF)

My apologies for not providing an update on this front as I was not in a position to organize a new Art+Feminism Editathon (with the dashboard having closed down for creating new events). Funds received: $1386.7 USD Funds spent till date: $794.05 USD

However, the Dashboard is now open for 2018 events, and I have been able to speak and confirm a collaboration with the Feminism-In-India group that conducts Editathons each month. Our proposed date for conducting the Editathon is 17th-18th February, 2018.

I am unsure of how to proceed onwards from here: a) Should I close the Art+Feminism 2017 Project with a report of only 3 events ? Or alternatively would you like me to conduct the February event and then close the reporting? b) I am happy to return the remaining funds / alternatively use them for conducting other Wikipedia events in my community [photo-walks / editathons] c) Since I would be participating as an organizer for the Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon series for 2018 as well, I can use the balance funds for the same.

Look forward to understanding how we can proceed. (Medhavigandhi (talk) 16:56, 18 December 2017 (UTC))Reply

Approval of remaining funds edit

Hello Medhavigandhi, thank you for your patience as we responded to your request. I have sent over an email as well but wanted to leave a response here as well.

  1. Please close the Art+Feminism 2017 project and submit a report for the 3 events you've already completed at your earliest convenience.
  2. I am approving the use of the remaining funds for the March 3rd event you proposed. Please submit an additional/separate report for that event due on April 3rd.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 21:48, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
