Grants talk:Project/Rapid/Jamie Tubers/Ilorin Wikimedia Hub Bi-Monthly Workshops

Latest comment: 4 years ago by I JethroBT (WMF) in topic Approval for date change

Hello Jamie Tubers thank you for submitting your grant request to follow up for the Ilorin Wikimedia Hub Bi-monthly workshops. I have a couple follow-up questions for you:

  1. Can you describe in more detail what you hope to accomplish at the four workshops?
  2. In the budget I noticed that you plan to bring in two WUGN leads to your monthly workshop. Can you let us know who these individuals might be and what exactly will be their role at the monthly meetups?

Please let me know. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 23 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

  1. The expected accomplishment from these workshops/edit-a-thons is to get the new editors more in tune with Wikim(p)edia and its policies. Most of them are enthusiastic about contributing, but they've been encountering the usual problems that newcomers face. These workshops aim to get them more comfortable within the community, so they won't end up leaving due to the lack of support (the kind that they can't get through online communication). These workshops/edit-a-thons also aim to continue to draw in new contributors as well, but it is more aimed at grooming the existing editors to become very experienced. Of course, another major aim is to create a lot of articles and improve articles!
  2. I think you misinterpreted the budget. I aim to bring in One WUGN lead to attend 2 out of the total 4 workshops. Therefore, the transport costs cover 2 round-trips, while the accommodation covers 4 nights (2 nights per workshop). The expected person is Shola Olaniyan. However, he has the right to choose someone else to represent him, if he can't attend. The expected role is basically to oversee the workshops and the local community as a whole, as he hasn't visited since activities began in the hub. His visit will be the official introduction to the hub, and a perfect opportunity for him to join in discussions concerning the strategic direction and management of the hub.
I hope these answers satisfy your questions.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 17:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Approval for date change edit

@Jamie Tubers: Hey Sam, I've received your request over e-mail to change the dates for this grant due to delays in sending your funds. You've requested to start on August 16th, 2018 (the date when you received funds) and end on March 31st, 2019. I approve the changes in these dates, and a grants administrator should be changing them on the proposal page soon. Thanks for the request, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 19:00, 17 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

This is to request for an extension for this grant for another six months, if that would be okay.
Like the grant page says, the main aim of this grant was to make sure that when there are no major projects going on, the community still gets to meet once in 2 months at least. Apart from the fact that we got the grant funds late, fortunately for us, there's been a couple of activities which we have been engaged in since the time we got the funding, including: "Months of African Cinema" and "Wiki Loves Africa". So, we still stuck with using this funds only when it's been two months since the last event.
So far, we have used this funds for 2 events so far: September Meetup and Wikidata meetup. These events have been successful with their outcomes.
It would be great if we can still keep these funds, in order to be able to organize rest of the meetups when necessary.
Cheers!--Jamie Tubers (talk) 23:24, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jamie Tubers: Hi Sam, thanks for this extension based on your request to run a community event about every two months. Your six-month extension is approved, and I'll update the grant page to reflect the changes. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:20, 7 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
