Grants talk:PEG/WM PH/Cultural Heritage Mapping project 2014/Report/Interim

Thank you for this thoughtful and detailed report. We appreciate the time and effort it takes to manage a well-organized and documented project. Please find our comments/questions below.

  • Congrats on a successful workshop! From the description, photos, and survey feedback, it looks like it was an organized, engaging, and effective 3 days.
  • Articles: Be sure to emphasize that details matter! For example, categories (including add more general categories like "Churches" or "Churches in the Philippines"), links (double checking that all links work), and quality sources.
  • While the number of certified volunteers is lower than expected, quality is more important than quantity. Thank you for updating your measures of success (1,000 articles still seems quite high for this number of volunteers).
  • It is a good idea to hold another workshop and training session for those participants that were close to the 75% mark. When will you be holding this training? Hopefully you can do in the next month so that more volunteers can be certified and sent into the field. I would definitely focus on those that are in new locations (outside the 8 already covered). Continuous edit-a-thons and trainings are definitely valuable.
  • It would be great if you could write a post for the Wikimedia Foundation blog regarding this project. The community is very interested in the work you're doing and it would be interesting to have an update on the first phase of the project (and another one at the end). Please let us know if you are interested in writing a blog post and if you need any support. I would be happy to collaborate.

Thank you for your comments as well, Alex. This is something that couldn't be made without the collaborative effort of everyone at WMPH.
What we plan to do on our next meeting/editathon with the certified volunteers are the following:
  1. We'll assign the volunteers to do peer review of Wikipedia articles that need editing and revisions. We'll also set their statuses at the Philippine Heritage Map website from "author" to "editor" so they will also edit/correct some markers. We want to first clean up the data already generated before we build upon further.
  2. Well ensure we ask the volunteers to categorize the articles, check the links and verify the sources cited.
We still have to talk with the Team, however, if it will be possible for us to do a re-training for the other participants by next month. But we will definitely schedule a series of edit-a-thons within the year, and we have already considered deploying the volunteers to places around the Philippines with little Wikipedia presence.
As for the blog post, I will write a draft soon. Hopefully I could submit it to you before Wikimania 2014. Thanks!

At this point it seems that 1,000 articles would be an unreachable target. I hope you can permit us to readjust our measures and probably realign our budget to allow the offering of editing courses, even for those who already passed certification, like a hands-on or side-by-side editing with experienced editors or even a level higher than basic editing. -- Roel (talk) 03:38, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your responses. Yes, you can request changes between budget items and updates to the measures of success. Please make any requests on the discussion page of the grant and we can discuss there. Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 04:12, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Alex! We will reassess the targets and measures and plan other activities to ensure quality of the volunteers' contributions and we will start a new discussion on the grant talk page. —seav (talk) 16:29, 20 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
