Thanks for submitting your idea, Wikipedia Street Take Over, for the New Readers Inspire Campaign. In order to help develop your idea further, we want to ask you to respond to the following questions here on the discussion page. Please refer to this document, which contains examples and resources to help you answer these questions:

1. Describe one or two versions of this idea that are smaller than your initial one.
  • An ideal smaller version will be to target Igbo language speakers and while embracing the same objectives of the idea and limit it to only this segment of people. It might not have as much wide reach as embracing both English and Igbo language but will truly resonate with people. It is important to note that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) recently unveiled the BBC Igbo Language Station and it has been met with much excitement
2. List three assumptions about your project and why you think those assumptions are true (see the document for some examples).
  • Wikipedia awareness is relatively low in Nigeria
  • Most Nigerians might not know how to pronounce the term "Wikipedia" without their native accent getting in the way and this might be the aspect of the idea that will highlight the fun (positive comedy) direction
  • Nigerians will be willing to embrace new knowledge that they find useful and value adding
3. List three skills or resources you don’t have, that you need for this project to succeed.
  • Video Cameras
  • Video Editing Skill
  • Audio Editing Skill
4. How can you determine if your project is successful?
  • Trending Topics on Social Media
  • Encouraging people to join the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and Igbo Wikimedians User Group (Awaiting Recognition)

Rapid Grant applications due March 15th edit

 

Thanks for starting your idea with the New Readers Inspire Campaign. I'm Chris Schilling (User:I JethroBT (WMF)), a community organizer supporting the campaign.

If you think you may need funding for your idea, Rapid Grants are available for ideas submitted during this campaign. Grant applications for ideas related to new readers are due by March 15th, 2018 (23:59 GMT). You can convert your idea into a Rapid Grant proposal by clicking on the Expand into a Rapid Grant button at the bottom of your idea page. Please review the guidelines and criteria before starting your grant application. If you need help completing your grant application, please contact me at cschilling wikimedia.org.

While applications for Rapid Grants can normally be submitted at any time, we have implemented a deadline for ideas on this specific topic. The reason for this deadline is because we plan to develop specific criteria later in 2018 for grant applications related to new readers and awareness-building activities. The applicants and project plans we receive from you in the coming weeks will help us define these guidelines and set expectations for future work in inviting people to use Wikimedia projects generally.

Also, if you do not need funding but would like to discuss other questions or needs for your idea (such as on-wiki volunteers or advising), please feel free to contact me on my talk page or at cschilling wikimedia.org, and we can discuss your needs over e-mail or schedule a time to have a conversation about your needs over Skype / Hangouts / IRC. Grant proposal feedback edit

Hi Blossom, thank you so much for submitting your grant proposal for your Wikipedia Street Take Over idea. We would like to support this project, but first I would like to discuss the idea with you a little bit more. I think it would be interesting to focus on building awareness of Igbo Wikipedia - especially because there will be at least two other people in Nigeria doing Wikipedia awareness project. Is this something you would be interested in doing? I am sorry that I did not have a chance to read your proposal before meeting you last weekend at the WikiIndaba Conference - it would have been so much easier to talk then. @KHarold (WMF): Thank you so much for this. This is a very relevant suggestion. An ideal smaller version as earlier highlighted will be to target Igbo language speakers and while embracing the same objectives of the idea, limit it to only this segment of people. It will truly resonate with the people. It is important to note that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) recently unveiled the BBC Igbo Language Station and it has been met with much excitement. The videos will be in Igbo language and will be subtitled in english. I also believe that the focus will not only build awareness of Igbo Wikipedia but will also help in recruiting editors for the Igbo language platform.
