Duplicate?Edit

@L293D: see also w:en:Wikipedia:Community health initiative on English Wikipedia/Per-user page, namespace, and upload blocking and thirteen year old request phab:T2674. — xaosflux Talk 13:09, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]

See also Community health initiative/Blocking tools and improvements and 2017 Community Wishlist Survey/Anti-harassment/Per-page user blocking. I think that this is already happening. WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:03, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]
@Xaosflux: Well, this is not exactly a duplicate: the idea is for the feature to appear on the &action=protect page instead of Special:Block. L293D (talk) 18:08, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]

Not solvable with anonymous editsEdit

This proposal can't be solved as long as anonymous edits are allowed. To solve it would require a protection level whereby only registered and identified users can edit an article. Without identification an otherwise blocked user can simply create a new account.

It is although possible to do a kind of opposite; only allow editing by a list of users. The list could be the previous contributors with some exclusions, like anonymous editors, or specific edit warring editors. It will limit the number of contributors seriously, so it should only be used as an alternative to full protection. — Jeblad 14:37, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]

I agree that people who get blocked can edit anonymously, but it is usual for them to engage in the same kind of editing as before, so it is not difficult to temporarily block these accounts as needed. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 15:19, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]
This is "disallow editing of certain users on a certain page" which isn't the same as "temporarily block these accounts as needed". A clean edit war can be stopped by inspecting the contribution, because some text fragment will be moved back and forth. This can be detected fairly simple, and users blocked from repeating the action after the third move. But this isn't to disallow certain editors from editing, this is to disallow certain edits from being done. — Jeblad 15:29, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]
Blocking of edit wars has a solution that is described in Grants:IdeaLab/Similarity measure for AbuseFilter. Not quite sure how this would work in the new fragmented store, but it will probably work. It is also fairly easy to extend this to text dumping in fast succession on several articles. — Jeblad 15:50, 20 July 2018 (UTC)[]
