Grants:TPS/Abbasjnr/Creative Commons Global Summit 2015
This Wikimedia Participation Support request was funded in the fiscal year 2014-15. A report is available.
Proposed participation
editI am a Wikimedia contributor with considerable experience rolling out offline Wikipedia across schools in Kenya and Tanzania and a current Wikipedian-in-Residence with Translators without Borders. I also served on the Wikimedia Grants Advisory Committee and the Wikimania Jury. I've also volunteered for the Wikipedia Zero program here in Kenya (testing, awareness and advocacy).
As a Creative Commons Kenya community member, I will be leading a session/discussion/open conversation on regional cooperation among Creative Commons Affiliates (especially within Africa), and the importance of partnering with other free-knowledge movements (such as Wikimedia) towards acheiving our overall mission.
Goal and expected impact
edit- My talk will revolve around brainstorming avenues for (regional) cooperation (both among Creative Commons Affiliates and across like-minded movements such as Wikimedia and Open Knowledge volunteers).
- As a result of my talk with the Creative Commons Community in Africa, I expect most individuals to be interested in rolling out Offline Wikipedia in their respective countries.
- I also expect to talk about my residency with Translators without Borders (that does medical content translation across various African languages). I hope to garner interested parties that will assist us in integrating the free medical content that we have into their local, respective language Wikipedias.
- Presenting learnings and experiences identifying common challenges. Participants get useful advice from peers about problems they face.
Budget breakdown
edit- Travel (round trip airfare from Mombasa to Seoul): USD 1000
- Accommodation: booked by Creative Commons
- Visa fees: USD 150
- Meals (dinner x 4 nights) and incidentals USD 50 x 4 days: USD 200

Endorsements
edit- Having someone with in-depth experience of re-distribution of Wikipedia content in the developing world from a community perspective in the fold strikes me as key - given this year's conversations centering around how to apply 4.0. Abbas is very well positioned to contribute to that end, best --Jan eissfeldt (talk) 14:43, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- Abbas Mahmood is one of CC's leading scholarship applicants for this year's Global Summit. We believe he is well-poised to make a significant contribution to the event and the broader open web community. Rebecca Rendl, Director of Development, Creative Commons (talk) 21:56, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
