Project Goal edit
Briefly explain what are you trying to accomplish with this project, or what do you expect will change as a result of this grant. Example goals include, "recruit new editors", "add high quality content", or "train existing editors on a specific skill".
- This project will prototype the combination podcast production, research and reflection residency which focuses on Wikimedia and cultural organisational practices, including archiving.
- It will discuss and reflect upon the long parallel history -20 years- of Pixelache Helsinki Festival and transdisciplinary platform, which has promoted open culture, and Wikimedia methodologies. Where have these overlapped, gone hand-in-hand and then diverged. We wish to reconcile in ambitions with both the Wikimedia and Creative Commons anniversaries.
- Pixelache Helsinki, in the year 2022, will work on their archival process and reflections, this project will give updated skills and understanding within our membership, interested Finnish and regional peers, as well as an international example for other similar cultural associations involved in network culture.

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing?
- Prepare and produce collaboratively 3 podcasts and organize their publishing and launch events, together with texts to elaborate and connect them to related wikidata.
- We will invite the following persons to be involved as 'Wikimedians-in-residence' with Pixelache, undertaking the following roles:
- Wikimedia Podcasters: Rebecca O'Neill and Toni Sant
- Wikimedia Content and Data creation: User:Yupik, User: Zblace, User: Agryfp
- Wikimedia and Helsinki Pixelache invitees: Florence Devouard, Sumugan Sivanesan
- Topics of the podcasts will range from democratization of media, sustainability of non-profit infrastructure, but also participation issues and audience engagement, especially in relation to Wikimedia and independent cultural associations.
- Each show will be uploaded on Commons (Wikimedia and Archive.org) with data entered in Wikidata and referenced and embedded in different Wikipedia articles.
- This will involve at least 4, at most 6 different people, in each of 6 residencies that are requested in the existing version of the grant submitted, but if we are given a chance to extend the budget to new regulations we would gladly increase the number.
How will you let others in your community know about your project (please provide links to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions)? Why are you targeting a specific audience?
- We have contacts with a few prominent Wikimedians and volunteers that are happy to promote it, but most of the work will be done by Wikimedians in residence and we plan to outreach to Commons, Wikidata and Finish and English Wikipedia.
- We first introduced in our 2021 Festival (6-13 June) the potential for this collaboration and it’s relevant to our scene(s): https://burn.pixelache.ac/contributors/radio/zeljko-blace-with-rebecca-o-neill-and-wikimedians
- We plan to cooperate with Finish cultural institutions that partner with Pixelache festival, including the Finnish Media Arts Network (mediataide.fi), but also Wikimedia Finland, Ireland, Malta and at least few more affiliates, as well as with individuals.
- We plan to outreach to the local and regional cultural sector, including other New Media Festival organizers (primarily Europe) that might want to discuss and work on sustainability of digital media. We hope to get festivals and cultural producers enthusiastic (again) over open content wikimedia publishing to enrich Wikimedia projects and reduce their own dependencies of commercial platforms.
- There will be 2 gatherings of contributors in hybrid formats: One at the start of the process at CTM Festival, Berlin, late January 2022; and another in Helsinki, at Pixelache's review of anniversary activities in 2022 at Kiasma Auditorium, 4.12.2022
- We will use existing channels of Pixelache promotion (Newsletter, Twitter @pixelache, Instagram @pixelache_helsinki, Facebook group Pixelaching & page Pixelache Helsinki) as well as Wikimedia social media accounts of guest-WM-residents and affiliates-projects.
What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
- We plan to brainstorm on plans of how to continue doing this work in 2022 as part of Pixelache Helsinki's 20th anniversary archival work, and also a future festival workflow/pipeline, and share this with other festival organizers.
Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:
- The gathering at CTM Festival would include those based in Berlin, be online and take into account the COVID-19 restrictions of the festival organisers.
- The event in Helsinki in December 2022 takes place in the context of Finland, which has a very vaccination rate (80% of all adults in November 2021) and organised COVID-19 pass system for public cultural events. 12 months ahead, we cannot know what are the circumstances for physically gathering, however, if it is not possible to physically gather at those dates we will organise online public events instead.

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets and feel free to add more specific to your project:
- The project will meet its goals if the podcast production is made with good quality, and the presentation captures the attention of at least an expert audience in the media cultural field of Europe (first focus regional) and Wikimedians interested in cultural work (especially media festivals).

What resources do you have? Include information on who is the organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).
- Pixelache is a Transdisciplinary Platform for Emerging Art, Design, Research and Activism, organised by the non-profit association Piknik Frequency ry. It consists of an annual festival in Helsinki, as well as participatory art-science and technology productions, public events, educational programmes, residencies and other activities. Our non-profit association has operated since 2002, also named Pikseliähky. pixelache.ac/pages/about
- Between 2021-2022, Pixelache will reach its 20th year anniversary, and Pixelache Helsinki Festival is currently one of the longest running cultural festivals in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region, that continues to promote emergent inter- and trans-disciplinary practices and thinking between art, design, technology, research and activism.
- Pixelache Helsinki has an active and long-standing local, regional and international network within multiple domains of cultural practice, including open culture, knowledge production, experimental event production, cross- and trans-disciplinary projects and processes.
- Pixelache Festival invited Florence Devouard from Wikipedia Foundation in 2005 'Dot Org Boom' edition of the festival. Over the past 10 years several Pixelache members have been involved in local Open Knowledge Finland and AvoinGLAM circles, of which applicant Andrew Gryf Paterson is also a member.
- We receive our main activity funds for 10 years from Arts Promotion Centre Finland, and regular support from Helsinki City Festival Cultural Fund. Many projects have been supported by additional funds for example in recent years from Nordic Council of Ministers, Kone Foundation, Audio-visual Promotion Centre AVEK, Goethe Institute Finland, Italian Council.
- The recent example of 2021 Festival (http://burn.pixelache.ac) is example of producing a hybrid event that mixes site-specific, radio, online stream and presence-based content production with open principles (see http://openradio.in as partner for open radio).
- 5+ active members in the association have experience of making regular podcasts for an international listening audience.
- In kind resources include:
- Pixelache Helsinki communications platforms (email newsletter, social media accounts) will be utilised to communicate this project, along with the local Open GLAM group of Open Knowledge Foundation Finland’s channels.
- Pixelache Helsinki’s will provide inkind administrative support via their part-time financial administrator.
