Project Goal

edit

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative

We aim to contribute to the movement strategy recommendation 6: Invest in leadership and skills development
What specific Movement Strategy Initiative does your project focus on and why? Please select one of the initiatives described here
  1. To implement the movement core principles and skills development in the communities in the Africa great lakes.
  2. To contribute in structural governance and learn from best practices in the region for sustainability.
  3. To empower the communities to contribute in more diverse Wikimedia projects

Project Background

edit
When do you intend to begin this project and when will it be completed?
We will start the project from January 2024 to December 2024
Where will your project activities be happening?
The project will be conducted in three countries of Burundi, DRC and Rwanda
Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
We will collaborate with the 3 user groups and we will acquire experience from the whole east Africa communities as region
What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
We intend to tackle the capacity challenges and skills gaps in particular.
Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?

As stated in the high level documentation from Wikimedia/ Wikipedia movement strategy page updated in 2023. The Movement Strategy is a collaborative effort to imagine and build the future of the Wikimedia Movement. We want also as East Africans to be part of these collaborative efforts. This strategy brings structural and cultural changes to address challenges and new opportunities. We want in East Africa region also to follow suite and engage more our communities and bring innovation in implementing the goals set for 2030. we are committed to respect the governing principles of the movement.

The initial movement strategy session we participated in as Wikimedia Rwanda took place in Kampala, Uganda, in September 2019. This workshop provided us with a more profound comprehension of the Wikimedia movement and clarified our roles as a newly established Wikimedia community initiated in March 2019.. The Wikimedia Burundi community started also in September 2019 and has been growing faster participating in various global movement activities. The Wikimedia community in DRC has been in existence since 2013.

• Our three communities had been collaborating on a small scale and based on individual’s relationship, it’s after agreeing to conduct together this strategy that we are more than interlinked with various projects we conduct together. • This initiative started as a grant project as a part of movement strategy implementation grants: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/MSIG/Nyinawumuntu/MSIG_in_Africa_great_lakes_region

The movement strategy phase one, we conducted in 2022 gave the following insights especially that 87% , respondents showed interest in joining the movement and one of the barriers are access to the internet , we will build on the achievement to make the second phase impactful: the majority of respondents were youth 44% between age of 18-24 years and 45% of age 25-30 years , this clearly informed our proposal to make the skills development as the priority . We realized the gender gap: 32 % of respondents were women and this informed our decision to make equity a priority and bring in measures to break the gender gap.

As a region, we are eager to contribute to the global movement with big events being hosted in our region: - We hosted Wiki Indaba in 2022 in Kigali Rwanda - Edu wiki 2024 to be hosted in Kigali Rwanda - Wikimania 2025 to be hosted in East Africa and More initiatives coming up from a regional and global perspectives

We have had also opportunities to learn from the wider wikimedia communities through international conferences that various members of our 3 communities attended such as WikiIndaba 2022 in Rwanda & 2023 in Morocco, Wikimania 2022 & 2023 in Singapore, EduWiki 202 in Serbia, Wikiconvention 2022 in Paris & 2023 in Cote Du Voire,to mention a few.
Lessons learnt need proper platforms and frameworks to implement and gaps have been identified from needs assessments conducted before

Apart from wikipedia and wiki commons, there is need to master and participate actively in the other Wikimedia projects as a priority for our region.

Project Activities

edit
What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.
  • We will follow the Global approach for local skill development - gathering data, matching peers, mentorship, and recognition. Skill development as a priority for our communities.

We will make on site trainings involving event organization workshops in quarter 3 where event managers platforms will be approached to empower our communities in the 3 countries especially the leaders in partnerships and community engagement

  • We envision our communities to be built by committed, well-trained, socially- and technically-skilled individuals from different backgrounds that reflect the diversity of Africa great lakes region. Collaborating as The East Africans and with a wide African integration vision.

We will empower our decision making process so that there is always a gender balance in all initiatives we are undertaking.

  • Invest in new or existing technological infrastructure which facilitates learning of skills through functional, collaborative, real-time tools and quality content with procedures to evaluate the quality of learning, all these will be part of our priorities

We will request a consultancy service in quarter 2 to develop an app customized to be serving offline at a training plaftorm for community members in remote areas

  • We are committed to the innovation in free and open knowledge concepts and we will achieve all these by doing regular evaluation, using iterative processes and adapting wherever and whenever it’s in our communities’ best interests.

We will innovate around the community skills development and prioritize the approaches which are more likely to give expected outcome

We will organize trainings in communication to increase the level of participation and writing skills in order to actively and sustainability contribute in different high level responsibilities in the movement. We will organize basic photography trainings and we will specifically contribute in the following projects.

We will organize English and French workshops and mentorships programs to reach 20 members in the region with a scale up plan to 100 community members

In all these initiatives we will be making a more robust data collection in order to feed to our 5 year strategic plan which will detail our activities in the region up to 2030 as stipulated in the global movement strategy. We will hire a professional consultancy firm to facilitate such an activity in the quarter 3 The governance workshops will be organized in quarter 4 to mobilize our members in the 3 countries to participate in the global council , and other worldwide governance programs with strengthening the local structures and making peer to peers programs for accountability.
