1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

This project aims to support the Africa Wiki Challenge 2022 global campaign with a similar national campaign in Nigeria to improve and contribute to Wikipedia the beauty of Africa roots from the consolidation of rich cultures and the sundry of diverse lifestyles in Nigeria. Nigerians culture and Africans culture as a whole are underrepresented on the internet.

The theme of the AWC 2022 campaign is "Projecting African Culture".

This project aims at not only projecting Africa’s culture as a whole but also to serve as an inspiration to document our own story.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Our approaches includes: Organizing physical meetup in each community. Creating or improving local contents about festivals, foods, rituals, rites, culture among others on English Wikipedia, Yoruba Wikipedia and Igbo Wikipedia. Training and recruiting new editors for the Wikimedia Community. At the end, the project will contribute, support and bridge the underrepresented articles on Nigeria related contents.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Panel discussion, training participants on what, how and where to contribute. There would be an edit-a-thon to make sure all participants understand what they have been taught during the training sessions.

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Yes, we are a team of 3 Wikimedia editors who are volunteers. Below are their usernames, roles and user group.

  • Major Lyte, Project Lead (Wikimedia User Group Nigeria). He is an experienced Wikimedia Editor. He has participated and won in various Wikimedia community projects. He organized Wikidata for Tourism and Wikidata for Media Personalities in Nigeria.
  • Iwuala Lucy, Coordinator for Igbo editors ( Igbo Wikimedia User Group). She is an experienced Wikimedian editor. She will be coordinating the Igbo editors.
  • James Moore200, Coordinator for Yoruba editors (Yoruba Wikipedia User Group). He is an experienced Wikimedian and he has won various prizes both in the local and global level. He would be coordinating the Yoruba editors.

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

Firstly, this work will address the content gap by focusing on article relating to festivals, recipes of food, culture, local landmarks, rituals and rites among others in Nigeria on Wikipedia, Wikidata and WikiCommons. Secondly, improving Nigeria stub articles to be a standard article.

The target participants are the active English, Yoruba and Igbo Wikimedia editors. We will use our WhatsApp group for the participants to talk and share ideas. We will also send out Google form seeking for feedbacks from the participants. We will also set up a support system to encourage and engage new editors and existing editors respectively.

10. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

The Wikimedia friendly space policy and Universal Code of Conduct will be aired and shared with all participants to enhance a friendly environment.

The Ilorin Wikimedia Hub members have been notified on the official WhatsApp page. The Yoruba Wikipedia User Group have been notified. The Igbo Wikimedia User Group have been notified their mailing list and Telegram group. I have also notified the WikiProject Nigeria.
