Grants:PEG/Wikimedia Community Brazilian Group of Education and Research/Wiki Loves Monuments Brasil 2015
Goal
editPlease briefly describe what will be accomplished if the project is successful (2–3 sentences). The main goal of that project is to improve the quality of content on the Portuguese Wikimedia projects by providing good quality images to the content production, increasing the number of freely licensed photographs from the cultural/historical heritage in Brasil and bringing new contributors to the Brazilian Wikimedia Movement and User Group.
Plan
editIn 2014 was organized in Brasil the first edition of a Wikimedia Photo Contest. The WLE 2014 generated a great positive impact, bringing near 7.000 new photo to commons with the participation of 950 photographers and new users engagement around 95%. The contest received a positive feedback from the local media, with many online and offline publications. The final results was published in a very important local photo magazine with ~50.000 copies distributed in all Brazilian states and during the second semester we organized a Photo Exhibition during the event Paraty em Foco one of the most important photo events in Brasil.
Based on the results of the WLE 2014 we decided to organize the WLE 2015 following the steps of the last edition with local contribution and organization led by the Wikimedia_Community_Brazilian_Group_of_Education_and_Research. The final results was really impressive with more than13.000 pictures uploaded and near 2.000 contributors participated with a 95% of new users engagement. WLE Brasil 2015 was the 3rd contest with more contributors among all contests organized by Wikimedia movement since the first WLE and WLM.
Now, the idea is to organize by the first time in Brasil an edition of WLM.

Fit with strategy
editWhat crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priories. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1-2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found at here.
- Increasing reach
- Creating partnerships with photo clubs, cultural centres and professional photographers to target potential contributors to Wikimedia Commons and off-line activities, increasing the quality of the content uploaded on commons.
- Through the national contest and massive online and offline marketing/activities we will target contributions from all regions of the country
- Increasing participation
- Onboarding and educating new contributors through direct communication and providing support material/brochures to keep the contributors involved on the Wikimedia Movements, based on the support from active and experienced contributors as well. Based on that approach we intend to improve the user's contributions retention after the contest.
Based on our statistics tool, around 10% of the participants of WLE 2014 participated on WLE 2015 and 15% of our last contest are participating on WLM 2015 (verified on 16/09/2015).
During the WLM 2015 we are trying to engage contributors to help us to increase the photos usage on pt.wiki and to help us organizing the content received through WLE in 2014 and 2015 on commons. Until now the feedback is very positive and probably we will organize some activities during the next months to use the content received during that 3 contests.
Measures of success
editPlease provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG Program Resources for suggested measures of success. Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some Global Metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.
- The success of the project will be measured through the following measures:
- at least 400 participants uploading one photograph or more;
- at least 3,000 photos uploaded;
- at least 5% of photos used on Wikipedia; (plans are in progress to increase the photos usage on pt.wikipedia)
- at least 60% of new users engagement during the contest;
- at least 20 new articles about historical/cultural heritage sites in Brasil;

- Nicubunu (talk) knowing how the BR team managed to get great results with WLE, I trust they can do the same with WLM
- Support Rodrigolopes (talk) 23:56, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- This team did a great work during last editions of Wiki Loves Earth, and Wiki Loves Monuments has never been organized in Brazil. This is a good oportunity for spead the movement and also to get pictures of monuments in that country. Millars (talk) 10:05, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
- The team for Wiki Loves Monuments in Brasil did and does a great job in organising the contest. Reading the request I think it is well written and set up in a good way. Brasil is one of the must have countries on my wanted list that was missing for years and has finally made themselves ready to participate in Wiki Loves Monuments. Welcome! Romaine (talk) 00:57, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
- I am collaborator of WLM Italia since 2012 and I see it most welcome that Brazil is given the financial support to organise a national contest, even more so on the basis of the good results reached with previous comparable projects. The proposal is well written and the listed actions feasable. Considering we are already in the second half of september, however, I think one should also consider whether time is still sufficient to reach these goals (with particular concern to the number of photos and general reach). I suggest a fast approval on the premise of an updating discussion with the organizing team of Wiki Loves Monuments Brazil Ste.caneva(talk) 12:12, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support I have being part of the teams in WLE 2014 and 2015 and I think this initiatives are a great opportunity to generate tons of quality content for Commons and also to engage new volunteers on outreach projects. Crang115 (talk) 20:04, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support I support this request. --Zoldyick (talk) 03:22, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
