Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Multimedia and Commons/Upload assistant: coordinates picker

Upload assistant: coordinates picker

  • Problem: When uploading images from places, there is an option to include informations about the place, where the image has been taken. Probably, the informations can be automatically entered if you use a camera with integrated GPS. If you use a camera without integrated GPS, entering the data is cumbersome. I need to go to another website (e.g. OSM) and copy the geographical coordinates from there and fill them in separately. There is an option to show the location, but it's only active after you havbe filled in the data to check them.
  • Proposed solution: Include a coordinate picker in the Image upload assistent.
  • Who would benefit: Users adding images from places and users, who want to check the geolocation of an item.
  • More comments: Maybe, the map window opening could be directed from the category, in many cases, coordinates of the city are already axisting somewhere, so the coordinates picker tool would not need to start with a map covering the whole earth. Maybe, the existing location check window could be improved to move the marker for slight corrections and a tool to add the view angel could be implemented (usually I omit that because a had to try and error to find the correct angle.

  • If is category connected with Wikidata, it can use coordinates from this entry or coordinates of upper category. But there are also categories, where coordinates have no sense. JAn Dudík (talk) 09:59, 20 January 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • The batch upload tools mentioned in the next proposal had this feature when they were still working. JiriMatejicek (talk) 09:20, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I think some code for this was already written for UploadWizard a long time ago, but never finished. See task T58612. Nosferattus (talk) 02:50, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
