Community Wishlist Survey 2021/Archive/Re-enable machine translation to English for experienced users
Re-enable machine translation to English for experienced users
Requires community consensus
- Problem: Machine translations are not enabled when translating to English.
- Who would benefit: Editors who wish to translate content to English.
- Proposed solution: Allow machine translations for editors with a certain level of experience.
- More comments: I understand why the machine translations were disabled, as there was just too much junk being passed on without any critical judgement. But a blanket ban goes too far in the other extreme. Instead, just set a reasonable level of experience needed to employ this tool responsibly.

Discussion
- Yes, please. Also see en:Wikipedia_talk:Content_translation_tool#The_tool_should_be_activated_or_disabled. At the very least, the tool should allow easy draft submission, right now it is cumbersome. People can start their work in it, and then lose it as they can't easily save it. --Piotrus (talk) 04:46, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
This too will get removed because I submitted too many ideas, so if you or anyone else wants to resubmit it, be my guest.Keepcalmandchill (talk) 05:46, 17 November 2020 (UTC) This should stay up after I withdrew another one. Keepcalmandchill (talk) 06:27, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- This is a social question for English Wikipedia, I think, which makes it not suitable for CommTech. --Izno (talk) 19:34, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- User:MusikAnimal (WMF), a translation admin, said it was appropriate. Keepcalmandchill (talk) 05:25, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- This is interesting, as afaik, it was an en-wiki decision to disable it, rather than an inherent tool decision (that is, were en-wiki convinced to change its mind, it could just be set at that level), which would indeed make it out of scope. Nosebagbear (talk) 14:51, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- My apologies. I obviously didn't read this closely enough! Indeed this is entirely up to the English Wikipedia. As I understand it, it doesn't actually require engineering resources, anyway. You just needs consensus. As such, I'm going to archive this proposal. Keepcalmandchill, your allow footnotes in VE proposal has not been archived yet (along with the other two), so you've still got three proposals :) Hope this is okay, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:14, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- MusikAnimal (WMF) No worries! I actually submitted another proposal with the expectation that the footnotes one would be withdrawn, so you can go ahead and archive that too. Cheers, Keepcalmandchill (talk) 08:38, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

- I agree, re-enable it as a draft translation, needing non-opposition or approval to publish to Wikipedia page. BoldLuis (talk) 10:19, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
