Introduction
editCIS-A2K has been working with the Odia community for the past 5 years. Over the years, A2K has learnt many valuable lessons having conducted activities for and with the Odia community. CIS-A2K is grateful to all the existing and former community members for the support given to CIS-A2K.
During the last work-plan, CIS-A2K with the help of the community members, has attempted to successfully spreading awareness about Odia Wikimedia projects, editor retention and bridging the gender gap on Odia Wikipedia. This year's work plan is formed on the basis of feedback, surveys and other discussions with the community members. This year's work plan includes new partnerships for the community and activities designed for the growth of Odia Wikipedia. In addition to these, it also includes a tentative exit strategy of CIS-A2K.

Needs assessment
edit- CIS-A2K conducts both annual and quarterly needs assessment in collaboration with the community. CIS-A2K conducts needs assessment during its outreach activities, community meet-ups and IRC discussions. The needs articulated through these channels inform the design of our outreach activities and skill building initiatives.
- Community is consulted actively for all programs both at the level of design and at the level of implementation. Feedback provided by the community regarding the activity is documented as IRC, talk page discussions and village pump posts for future references.
Strengthening existing community
editWikiTungi: City based community groups
WikiTungi is a city based Wikipedia community formed to help the Wikipedians in the city meet, share and learn. The Odia community's WikiTungi is a based in two cities, Puri and Bhubaneswar. While Wikimedians in Puri conduct meetups bi-monthly, Bhubaneswar Wikimedians meet once a month. The community members of WikiTungi help mark the presence of the movement, and also help in organising events in the city.
- Idea
Over the last year, CIS-A2K and the Odia Wikipedia community have been successful in regularly conducting WikiTungi activities. A2K will follow up with the exiting WIkiTungi and help Wikipedians hailing from different parts of Odisha start their own WikiTungis and sustain the growth. A2K will attempt to find communities of interest and other local institutions to realise this idea. In order to engage the Wikipedians with WikiTungi activities, A2K will involve Tungi members in global projects and, in turn, invite global community members to share their projects. As part of its tentative exit plan, A2K will try to groom community leaders with the help of WikiTungis and enable them to conduct outreach programs.
- Projection
A2K will try to replicate the concept of WikiTungi in cities and towns of Odisha with 1) a large Wikipedia community and 2) potential institutional partners. A2K will attempt to build bridges of collaboration between community members and the institutions and help in their mutual growth. For example, while collaborating with a local college will help the Odia community in reach and cultivating new editors, it will help students of the institution receive basic training or a certificate course on Wikipedia.
- Challenges
Bringing editors' attention to join Tungi meetups is a major challenge. In order to overcome this challenge, A2K will conduct hands on Wikipedia training session with the help of global community members, facilitating Tungi members with similar interests to moderate these sessions. The Tungis will also focus on fun activities that keep the editors actively engaged and interested.
- Metrics
The concept of WikiTungi will help involve active editors, and also engage new editors joining the meetups. New GLAM projects and edit-a-thon ideas generated from these meetups would also help in adding or improving articles on Wikimedia projects. The labels and descriptions of Wikidata will be translated in this.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
After every community meetup, A2K will inform the learning and evaluation team of WMF on the learnings from the Tungi meetup. After every quarter, A2K will organise surveys for the community members to improve its strategies for future Tungis. Every six months, A2K will write an outcome blog on the CIS blog involving Wikipedians. A2K will then write an overall outcome blog on the Wikimedia blog after conducting a year of activities. At every meetup, A2K will post and share the outcomes on different social media channels to spread awareness of Tungi activities online and to reach more individuals.
Bridging the gender gap
Over the years, the Odia Wikipedia community and the A2K team have tried to bridge the gender gap on Odia Wikipedia, by encouraging participation of female Wikipedians and emphasising their involvment in various global projects.
- Idea
CIS-A2K has attempted to regularly address the gender gap problem in its previous work plans. Over the course of one year, A2K has successfully brought at least 10 female Wikimedians on-board and involved them in various outreach activities conducted by A2K. For the upcoming grant year, A2K will not only focus on the participation of female Wikimedians, but will also help them represent and conduct various outreach programs in Odisha. A2K will also try to bridge the gap in terms of content.
- Implementation
By organising thematic edit-a-thons and workshops related to gender gap, CIS-A2K hopes to close the gap between male and female participation as well as the content represented. A2K will involve at least 1 female contributor in its outreach programs, and help them take the lead in these programs. A2K will partner with external and interested organisations in bridging the gender gap in order to raise wider awareness on the issue.
- Challenges
There are some personal and professional commitments by Wikipedians before they take part in any event. A2K will therefore consult with Wikipedians and check their availability before conducting any event. Searching for potential partners to collaborate on this sensitive issue is another challenge. A2K will consult with its existing partners and try to take forward any potential leads for this initiative.
- Metrics
It will involve active editors who joined Wikipedia with community and A2K initiative and also involve new Wikipedians and individuals.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
A2K will help Wikipedians in documenting their work on local Wikipedia, Meta, Outreach or other Wikimedia projects. A2K will highlight their work in gender gap mailing lists and conduct quarterly surveys and need assessment to address any issues that they might have.
Tutorials on Wikimedia projects
- Idea
A2K will help community members in creating training tools, videos and tutorials for Odia Wikipedia. A2K hopes that these would help the community members in sharing and distributing the files during outreach programs and on social media channels. Uploading tutorial videos on YouTube or Vimeo will help community members in providing online training. A2K will also print the updated version of offline training brochures for community members during workshops and seminars. With an increase in mobile editors there's a demand from community members to design new tutorials for mobile editors and to create new tutorials for the new gadgets and tools introduced onto Wikipedia.
- Implementation
A2K will take the help of community members and existing partners for this initiative and identify potential partners to involve community members in preparing these materials.
- Challenges
Translating and creating illustrations for training materials is a major challenge. A2K will involve community members in suggesting a suitably localised designs and proofreading translations of these materials.
- Metrics
It will involve active members community in the community and will also involve individuals with access to the materials.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
All the tutorials or training materials will be made available on Commons. A single repository page will be created for all the materials; it will also be used in Chata Sabha where new users asks questions. The videos will be available on the official YouTube channel of Odia Wikipedia and will also be available on Vimeo.
Cultivating New Editors
editInstitutional Partnerships
- Idea
A2K will endeavour to find potential institutions and partners to collaborate with Odia Wikipedia, and run activities. These thematic institutions and communities of interest would then help in addressing particular projects on Odia Wikipedia. The institutions would help community members in providing work space and access to its well-stocked resources. Taking inspiration/ guidance from different global projects and partnerships, the A2K team will try to replicate the activities with its partnering institutions. For example, #1lib1ref, WEPs etc. In the previous work plan, A2K conducted follow up activities with its previous institutional partner IIMC, Dhenkanal. A2K also collaborated with potential partners like Utkal University, Sambad, OKCL and Bakul library for supporting community members.
- Implementation
Identifying potential partners in different parts of Odisha, conducting awareness programs with their staff members and in their institutions.
- Challenges
Searching for potential partners with similar interest is a difficult task; fewer follow up activities with the existing partners decreases the interest in the program. A2K will not repeat previous mistakes and will follow up regularly with the existing partners as well as the previous partners institutions.
- Metrics
In every institutional partnership A2K will involve active community members to participate and discuss with the institution, which will help cultivate new editors and involve individuals. As per the community's suggestion, A2K will take help from partners and institutions to help improve the quality of Wikimedia projects(for example, proof-reading Odia Wikisource texts).
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
A2K will update on Village Pump after initial approach stage of on-boarding any potential partner and will take community consultation before going ahead with the partnership. A2K will also help in spreading awareness of the activities through social media channels, blogs and media mentions.
Social media outreach
- Idea
A2K will aim to use social media for a variety of opportunities that could be tapped into- as a medium to reach towards individuals, raising awareness about Odia Wikipedia, targeting mobile editors, etc. Odia Wikipedia's Twitter account is considered one of the most popular accounts among the Odia "tweeple" owing to its regular activities.
- Implementation
Regularly updating social media accounts during trending events, activities, and edit-a-thons will bring new readers and editors to Odia Wikipedia. A2K would also aim to design campaigns and storytelling related to the Odia language, people, culture and Odisha on the Internet; it is also important to identify and engage with a critical mass to convert online users to Wikimedians.
- Challenges
Regularly updating on social media channels is a challenge; in the past, A2K members tried to regularly post Picture of the Week, Article of the Month on social media platforms, but failed to update these regularly.
- Metrics
Regular updates on social media channels will help in involving individuals, register new users and add new images and texts to Wikimedia projects.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
A2K will share activities of the community through different social media accounts; A2K will document on-wiki about the new Wikipedians who have joined through social media outreach and will write a learning pattern on cultivating new editors from social media.
Outreach
editWorkshops and Offline activities
Last year, CIS-A2K along with community members, conducted three events in Western Odisha, this helped spread the movement there; A2K will follow up with the institution and the volunteers to reach more parts of Western Odisha and reach towards different parts of Odisha, as suggested by the community members.
- Idea
- To create awareness on Odia Wikipedia through offline work; CIS-A2K will focus on reaching individuals through offline sources such as workshops, seminars, book stalls etc. CIS-A2K will try to focus its activities in every part of Odisha as part of small city outreach. A2K hopes to create at least one Wikipedian and bring new readers to the Wikimedia projects.
- Implementation
Organising workshops and offline activities in different cities of Odisha; planning workshops with local literary clubs, institutions and libraries for Wikipedia orientation and workshops.
- Challenges
Travel is a major challenge in this region; reaching towards every part of Odisha is time consuming. In most of the area,s local Wikipedians aren't available, so following up with the program by the A2K Community Advocate is difficult.
- Metrics
Workshops and offline projects will involve active editors and new individuals. New articles and images will added onto Odia Wikipedia and Commons; proofreading folios on Odia Wikisource will also be carried out.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
Workshops and offline activities will have different pages on Meta as well as on Odia Wikipedia. Work will be mentioned in the community digest of Wikimedia blog and will be shared widely on social media channels and newsletters.
Thematic GLAM projects
- Idea
During the community consultation, CIS-A2K was able to gauge the keen interest of community members in conducting thematic GLAM activities for Odia Wikipedia. Being a diverse state, with different cultures, festivals, dance forms etc, various institutions partake in upholding the heritage of Odisha. A2K will collaborate with these local GLAM institutions and thematic institutions to set up GLAM projects for the Odia Wikimedia projects. A2K, after discussions with the community members, will approach GLAM institutions and will involve Wikipedians in the GLAM projects.
- Implementation
Approaching museums, archives, libraries to start Wikimedian in Residence would be a priority. A2K would also collaborate with local dance academies to start GLAM projects on various dance forms of Odisha. Re-licensing the resources from these institutions and making it available under public domain is a key area of collaboration.
- Challenges
Understanding the interest of the institution and collaborating with local Wikipedians would be challenging; this would be overcome by conducting surveys, face-to-face interaction with the community members and the institution
- Metrics
The project will involve active editors of the community and staffs members of the partnering institutions as new individuals. New images, files and articles will be added onto Wikimedia Commons.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
The project will be documented on Wikimedia Commons as well as on the local Wikipedia. A2K will help community members in getting media attention and will share their stories with the global community members.
Technical and Outreach Support and Development
editAwareness of FOSS tools
- Idea
A2K will engage community members with technical skills on different FOSS projects, helping them build tools and provide technical help to the community. CIS-A2K will also help community members reach the global, national and local leaders from the tech community. A2K will help spread awareness of FOSS tools and the FOSS movement in different parts of Odisha. MediaWiki workshops in universities and colleges will be undertaken for enhancement purposes and fixing bugs. Creating Odia fonts and input tool apps for different mobile operating systems will also be carried out.
- Implementation
- Seeking help from institutions and collaborating with government institutions for spreading FOSS activities.
- Training community members through mini MediaWiki training and WikiTungi meetups.
- Inviting community members to take part in the international level MediaWiki training by CIS.
- Challenges
Partnering with government institutions will be a major challenge; A2K will follow up with initiatives like Tamil Virtual Academy and replicate the same in Odisha.
- Metrics
It will involve active editors from the community and cultivate new Wikipedians from workshops and training sessions.
- Documentation strategy and evaluation practice
The bugs will be filed on Phabricator; new tools and fonts will be updated to the community members through mailing lists and blogs.
