  • No (not yet) - --Jeroenvrp 01:35, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC) - I strongly advise not to start this edition yet. We still need all the userpower on the Dutch Wikipedia, when there are enough users on WP, a Dutch Wikinews can be started. Let's first see how the English and German Wikinews are doing. Also the nl.wikipedia needs more articles as a reference for Wikinews.
  • Zwerver's Response 0:58, 10 jan 2005 (EST) - You can say no because you think that nl.wikipedia has to be bigger, but from my point of view there is more challenge on making a good running newspaper then to create an encyclopedia. And if the people here are willing to start, I really want to join.

  3. I propose a common Scandinavian Wikinews (located for instance under scandinavia.wikinews.org, with redirects from sv, da and no). Since Swedish is the largest language, the Swedish interface should be used until it is (hopefully) technically possible to let users select the language interface they prefer. -- Wolfram 14:19, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  6. Muneyama 12:24, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC) I agree with Den fjättrade ankan, it is far easier for swedes to read in english then to read in norwegian or danish. I assume the same goes for the speakers of those languages.
  7. --80.119.68.220 09:44, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC) I've been active on the english wikinews, and I think it's time for a Swedish one now! :-)

This is like the EU - Wikinewses have to wait until the others reach the necessities for entry or launching! (just joking :) So, yeah, that's fine. I will talk to the others to get them interested so we can build a vibrant Ro.Wikinews community. Cheers, Ronline 07:10, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Comment: These are not invalid votes. The page clearly states that: "At least 5 people speaking the language have to express an interest in a language edition in order for it to be created. Of these, at least 3 have to be regulars in an existing Wikimedia project in that language -- regular means, at least 3 months of presence and at least 200 edits." At least three must be regulars in an existing Wikimedia project, but the only requirement to vote is that you must speak the language. --Ce garcon 20:43, 27 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, 4 of those votes were from Ja wikipedia regulars and the rest one was from an user. So there are five legitimate votes and they filled the requirements.

  • If we could open up a Chinese-language Wikinews, without it being the focus of the PRC or any other nation, I don't think there would be an issue with it (but still be aware that the Great Firewall would probably block it). --Mrmiscellanious 16:26, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello. I really want you to create a Chinese category. China and Taiwan have one of the biggest countries and I don't really understand why you wouldn't want Chinese to be one of the top choices. More than 95% of China's people speak Mandarin/Chinese, and China is a prospering country. So I would really appreciate adding more articles in Chinese for WikiPedia, WikiNews, and all the others
  • Is WikiMedia enforcing a self-censorship due to a possible censorship by China? Please note that the communist China is not the only country that uses the Chinese language. People in the democratic Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and countless communities in the rest of the free world also use this language. (See the Wikipedia article on Chinese language.) It doesn't make sense to deprive these free people of WikiNews in their own language just because the communist China uses the same language. If China wants to censor the site to "protect" its citizens, I'd say let them do what they want with their own people. Whatever they do in China should have no effect on us, the Chinese-speaking people of the free world. I don't think WikiMedia needs to worry about any legal issues as long as the servers are not physically located within the borders of the People's Republic of China. In fact, I'm surprised even to see WikiMedia worrying itself over this matter, and effectively practicing a self-censorship because of a goverment that has no jurisdiction over it. --Sam Chen 08:33, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • As long as that dosen't involve the ban of other Wikimedia sites, such as Wikipedia, which would, in my opinion, turn all the site into some anti-communism propaganda site (or at least the goverment will think so), and discourage(or possibly disable) a lot of contributors. And I don't think Taiwan is more democratic than the "People's" Republic, nor the other way round. Of course, there's no denying that the Chinese Wikipedia is biased to PRC right now. I'd say let zh-Wikinews be a little biased (but lesser than the zh-WP) while use no official self-censorship process. The Wiki Way is enough for zh-Wikinews. (Disclaimer: This edit only represent my opinion at the time of writing)--58.33.228.4(w:User:Kakurady/w:zh:User:卡库拉迪)08:20, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    • "And I don't think Taiwan is more democratic than the "People's" Republic, nor the other way round." No offense, 卡库拉迪, but... what are you smoking? Of course Taipei is more democratic than the Beijing government! --Ce garcon 17:41, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Wikipedia is already blocked in mainland China, so the argument is getting pretty old. Ausir 22:35, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • What are we exactly waiting for, concerning the launch of a chinese edition of Wikinews ? They start creating pre-launch pages in May, 2005, and everything is done, now. I think a decision has to be taken, here. And I think we don't have to care if the PRC is happy about it or not. If we begin to follow that very path, in short time, self-censorship will become the rule on Wikimedia projects. They are numerous, they are motivated. Just let them work !
