The project has three goals:
- improving the coverage of topics related to Open science (and Open Access in particular) on Wikimedia projects
- facilitating their reuse of suitably licensed scholarly materials - an ongoing media donation project
- development of policies regarding open access and open data pertaining to research about Wikimedia projects
- Little interest from the community so far, but will keep trying.
Coverage of Open Access topics
edit
- Expanded the Catalogue of OA-related topics for which it would be desirable to have an article on the English Wikipedia
- Tracking work on articles within that scope across languages
Reuse of Open Access materials
edit
- Signaling of OA-ness of references used in Wikipedia Signpost
- Gathering of usage stats of files from OA sources
- Uploading OA files for use on articles that lack suitable illustrations
- Wikipedia Cite-o-Meter
- Collaboration with academic journals on getting peer-reviewed materials onto Wikipedia, including some articles specifically designed for that purpose
- Co-wrote an article on how the non-commercial clause in CC licenses impedes the dissemination of scientific information, taking biodiversity as an example. In most cases, dropping the -NC clause would mean that the materials become eligible for reuse on Wikimedia projects. WebMed Central reacted by dropping the -NC and switching to CC BY.
