WIKIMEDIA CEE HUB

Regional hub covering Central and Eastern Europe

WELCOME TO THE WIKIMEDIA CEE HUB

The process of designing the CEE Hub started at the Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2020, in close alignment with the 2030 strategy recommendations. Next year, the research phase started with the funded proposal CEE Needs Research. You can find research results here.

Based on the results from the research phase and working on the concept for formalising this new network, the initial group of volunteers applied for a grant named "Building a CEE Hub". After this grant proposal was approved, the implementation of the project (which we also call the CEE Hub Year 1 grant) started in July 2022. In October 2023, the CEE Hub submitted another grant proposal for the implementation of the CEE Hub's activities in 2024. The name of this project is: "Stronger CEE Hub" (Year 2 grant).

Additionally, during the Year 1 of the CEE Hub project implementation we proposed reallocation which were accepted by the WMF and thereafter a separate budget item for freelancers was introduced. The CEE Hub subsequently contracted two freelancers, Biyanto from Indonesia and Violeta Frimu-Patel from Moldova. Biyanto Rebin worked on mapping almost every language community in the Central and Eastern Europe (Community Mapping and Data) while Violeta Frimu is doing a research about functioning and development of smaller (and sometimes less organised) CEE communities (Studying barriers).
