What is Wikikernel? edit
- A place to experiment and try new ideas
- Multi-lingual
- English is not the only language used by Wikimedia users.
What Wikikernel is not edit
- A place to host content similar to pages on other Wikimedia projects
- This is for experimentation that can't happen elsewhere, usually due to policy restraints. If the content you are contributing can go to one of the current Wikimedia sister projects, it will not only receive a much larger audience but has administrators to help you with organizing your contributions much better than we can do here. Although reasonable efforts will go to relocating the content that is misplaced on Wikikernel, you should be aware that your contributions might end up being deleted anyway, even if accidentally.
- A web hosting service
- We don't have the resources to be able to host any and all types of personal content, including blog entries, resumes, and other personal essays. Formal policies exist for creating a new project and should be followed. Please don't add content to the various projects hosted at Wikikernel that is inconsistant with their proposal mission statement.
- A soapbox for personal essays
- There are many forums available on the internet at many sites that are available to post personal political opinions on many topics. The projects hosted through Wikikernel are for those ideas that will have a reasonble liklyhood of becoming a full Wikimedia sister project.
How does a New Project Get Created on Wikikernel? edit
- A new project proposal is created on Meta first.
- Initial announcements to Goings-on and Foundation-l would occur to gather support for the project.
- A general interest vote would occur by interested participants to demonstrate project viability.
- A notification of Wikikernel administrators would be subsequently made that the vote has taken place, and that the new project be given access to Wikikernel, including a link on the Main Page of Wikikernel. This would be done on a page set aside for this task on the Wikikernel website.
Note that Wikikernel is only here to help provide a demonstration of a new project and not to generate a whole new Wikimedia sister project. If you want to create a full sister project, you must still follow the new project policy including a larger interest vote and a translation of the proposal into five languages, with a wider announcement of the desire to create a new sister project. Wikikernel is here to help make that very large leap from an initial concept to obtaining that acceptance from the general Wikimedia user community.
Wikikernel Voting Guidelines edit
- Voting for inclusion in Wikikernel would take place on Meta (this is a point that could be argued, with perhaps the vote on Wikikernel itself instead?)
- Voting must use the standards for Wikiversity/Vote and Wikinews/Vote in terms of having a user page page that point to the "usual" place that you contribute to Wikimedia projects... to demonstrate that you are not a sock puppet vote.
- Demonstration of project viability must have at least five (5) Wikimedia users willing to support the new project with no more than 25% opposition. Note that this is opposition to its inclusion onto Wikikernel and not necessarily opposition to becoming a full Wikimedia sister project, which should be made clear during this vote.
Wikikernel Culling Policy edit
- Projects will be "terminated" when significant activity in the project has ceased, by monitoring the number of new edits over a period of time. Generally speaking, if there hasn't been any significant new activity for more than a year it will be considered "inactive" and removed from the front page of Wikikernel and added to a list of inactive projects.
- Projects that have been "approved" as a formal Wikimedia sister project will have content transwikied to the new wiki, and redirect links on Wikikernel to the new project, as can be done technically with the MediaWiki software.
- Projects that remain inactive for a considerable period of time may be completely deleted.
