Activity

We participated in the opening ceremony and tried to take photographs of all the national teams, unfortunately limited battery charge meant we did not capture all of them. Then, during a day at Stadion Wankdorf, we took photos and video of the athletes in badminton, track and field events, as well as swimming on the next day. We also took photos of signage, medals, result tables, promotion posters, volunteers, atmosphere at the Village, the Pride parade and the 250 magnificent LGBT flags displayed all over the Bernese town centre.

We mainly worked on improving the English article EuroGames, which was a stub with very few sources. We had conversations with Hugh Torrance and Susan Townsend, co-presidents of the Board of the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF) to see if and how we could cooperate in 2024 and organize an editathon and photo walk during the EuroGames 2024 in Vienna and 2025 in Lyon. The subject of LGBT sport is vast and poorly covered on Wikimedia projects and both are eager to make this activity part of EGLSF’s future plans.

On the Saturday, we had an online session with OwenBlacker over Jitsi and in the afternoon we participated in the Pride March in Bern. On the Sunday we had a short reflection and learning session about non-trivial video uploading to Commons. In the afternoon Z also visited the FIFA Museum in Zürich, with a dedicated tour of the exhibition on Women’s football history.

We also met with Monika Hofmann, from the University of Bern, who works on related topics; she is co-author of the book Vorbild und Vorurteil. Lesbische Spitzensportlerinnen, Role model and Stereotype: Lesbian sports stars). We also visited Payoshni Mitra, independent researcher and former CEO of the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport; both expressed interest in collaborating in the future.
