Wiki Loves Africa 2019/Mass messages

Mass messaging is an effective way to inform people of Wiki Loves Africa updates. Previous participants can be informed of the start of a new competition, and current participants can receive updates during and after the competition.

To send a mass message:

1. Acquire an audience. If you want a list of previous or current participants, you can get a list of uploaders within a category with the 'Uploaders in cat' tool.
   • Example: Use c:Category:Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Nigeria to get a list of everyone that uploaded an image to Wiki Loves Africa 2016 in Nigeria.
2. Create a list of talk pages you want to send messages to. Each link should be formatted like # {{#target:User talk:USERNAME}}
3. Draft the message you want to send on a new page. Do not include a header, as the MassMessage tool has a separate field for that.
4. If you are an admin, you can use Special:MassMessage yourself. Otherwise, ask an admin on the Commons to send the message out (you may use the Administrators' noticeboard). To make the process quick and easy, you will want to provide clear links to the list of recipients, the subject of the message, and the message body.

What was initially planned for 2019

Impact testing research : CivilServant's Wikimedia studies/Wiki Loves Africa Recruitment 2019

Research not funded and not approved in time by Ethic Board : dropped

This year, we will work on testing impacts of mass messages on former participants.

In this research project, students from a Princeton University class on Designing Field Experiments, guided by J. Nathan Matias (CS_natematias), will work with CivilServant and Florence Devouard to test ideas for increasing the participation rate of previous contributors.

A first experiment will be conducted in February and will test messages for increasing the participant rates of previous contributors. A second experiment will be conducted in Spring 2019.

The Feb experiment will consist in

• two different messages, one insisting more on reward whilst the second will insist on altruism. Some recipients will also receive no messages at all.
• messages will be sent in French and English
• recipients will be former participants of WLA 2014-2015-2016-2017.

What should we contribute?

This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. The theme Play! encourages the submission of visual representations of joyful and serious games, sport, and recreation in the form of board or mental games, physical fun or contests, playful interactions, theatrical and musical performances, etc.

In addition to the value your photos contribute to human understanding, there are several prizes on offer– including two special prizes for photo and media that (a) capture Women in sport or (b) culturally specific and traditional formal forms of play, recreation or events.
